1.2L Punto would be a good purchase. I have an 03 Model and do 450KM's a week for the last three year and never had one thing wrong with it and flew the NCT. Not too bad on the motorway either, cruises at 130 KM/h

Fiat Puntos are actually grand little cars for first time drivers. The fix it again tomorrow is absolute horse crap as per my post above and are quite nippy for a 1.2L . OP would be get a decent 04 model for his budget. I will be changing mine soon though for something bigger! I never had any trouble with mine. Stay away from Peugeot's and older Corsa's. Starlet, Punto, Micra probably the best of the lot if 1.2 is your max

Of course it's horse crap, most even don't know why they dislike the cars so much or where the bad name came from. It's funny listening to the crap these idiots have to say, the piss poor excuses, the hearsay from Paddy McGinty in the pub said he broke a fingernail while taking out the key etc etc etc....

Must annoy the haters so much I used to enjoy calling out to others broken down and rescuing them with a FIAT. Ooooh I went there, betcha they won't like that, hope it rattles their cages. Deal with it

Why may I ask to avoid Peugeot? ;)

Probably because something like a 206 is a dire car that's horrible to drive and can be a bit iffy in the electrics department and back axles tend to wear in them as well.:)

No that's a 206 not Peugeot as a whole. Which is bloody miserable anyway.... Patchy electrics due to poor designs, back axles go due to, wait for it, lack of maintenance!

So, what's wrong with Peugeot? We already covered the 206 ;)

Ok I not sure what has been said so far because I really dont have time to read whole 7 pages of thread at the minute. Back in December I got myself a 00 1.4l Almera saloon for 650 euro. Its 96-00 model I think if i recall correctly which doesnt have many of the issues the newer models have. Anyway I got a full service and brake pads straight away and it flew through the nct in may without putting another cent into it.

Maybe I was lucky but I have talked to a few who had the same model and they have all talked about how reliable the car was. Ive taken it on the motorway Galway to Dublin a few times and it happily motors away at 120-140km without a problem. It handles very well also. Its not too hard on fuel either but safety rating is ****e enough.

Long story short it seems to fit the initial criteria you set out so might be an option.

Sorry but axle wear on these is not down to poor maintenance. The axle wears due to bad design and the grease drying out. This leads to bearing failure and in turn axle wear. You can't really maintain the axle because peugeot never put a grease nipple on the axle and trying to find the right area to install one can prove difficult.

You're on the right track there....

See, need to think outside the box here as the French are f*ckers for bad designs. Remove the trailing arm, you can pack it with grease. When removing the arb, the splines can be cleaned and regreased to make it easier for the next time. When refitting, a seal kit can be ordered from Peugeot to prolong the life of the axle and grease even more.

Granted not a very diy job but it is maintenance that people never think of, then give out when the back tyres are being eaten off and have to buy an axle

    Next please ;)

But that in effect means taking the axle apart to do what should be a simple job. It's like saying to change the oil in the engine it must be taken apart, which just isn't viable in a regular maintenance schedule.

The polo, yaris, corsa or micra or fiesta be good cars for students on a budget you get second hand. Cheapish to run.

That's my point, it's not diy but it's still maintenance. You have to think around the bad designs and as a result, this is the way. It's not easy and viable to most but that's how it is.

    Do you understand me? ;)

For the OP's budget the Polo, Corsa, Peugeots would be piles of dirt. Fiesta, Micra, Punto, Yaris are good cars

Most yaris's for €1000 have something expensive wrong with them.
