Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Looking to change m/board, ram, processor, case, power supply, win 7 64 bit and potentially graphics card. Holding onto hd, monitor 24". I have a 9800GT 1GB, just wondering is it adequate?
Budget of 600 to 700 euro for a gaming machine (FPS). Want to see signinficant improvement from the quad core 2.4, 4gb, vista 32 bit. Would prefer to stick with Intel, minimum of 8gb ram and if an upgrade of graphics card was needed I prefer to stay with Nvidea.
    Any suggestions welcome and appreciated.

8gig of RAM and Vista 32bit means you'll get the use of only 3.2gig or so max, just as with 4gig.

Can you overclock your existing processor and maybe upgrade the graphics card?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

personally i would recommend a completely new set up (bar the hdd).
for graphics i'd recommend a gtx 560 (better off with a new one cause thats where the majority of the gaming power comes from) and for the proc i would recommend a amd hex core but you said you'd rather stick with intel which means you'll have wait a few months for the sandybridge problem to be sorted
PS 8gb of ram is too much overkill and completely unnecessary and would be a complete waste of money at this time.

m/board knackered, looking for a fresh start.

I thought by now even with the problems with sandy that prices would have came down. Current pc is quad core 2.4ghz, looking a i7. looking at 8gb ram as a bit of future proofing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 74 ✭✭Jamey_29

There was never an issue with sandybridge. It was with the chipset that supports it. This problem was fixed and pretty much straight away so there is no inventory issues for i7.

My hope is to have as near enough to a score of 8 in Windows. Previous pc was 5.9 for most parts bar the ram. I've no pc at the mo and borrowing a laptop. Christ i hate laptops :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

an i7 on a budget of 700? sorry to disapoint but thats never going to happen to get a decent i7 set up youd want to spend atleast 1000 youd be bettee off with an i5 and a gtx560

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,983 ✭✭✭Tea_Bag

especially not if you want a 7.9 on your WIE. you're gonna need an SSD to get the HDD there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

btw the windows index score dosn't mean crap but if your looking to get 7.9 (7.9 being the highesy not 8) then your looking to spend between 1200 to 2000 because your gonna need an ssd, a high end cpu (i7 2600k barely gets to 7.9 with overclocking) and gtx580 or hd6970 but as i said the windows index score is aload of crap so never focus on maxing out the score

thanks for the info. looks like the first step will be -

    case
    m/b and i7
    win 7 64 bit
    8 gb ram

    next step
    gtx 560
    ssd

    budget out the window :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

if the budget is out the window wouldnt it better to get a gtx570 instead because if your getting an i7 then the thaught of getting a 560 seems somewhat unbalanced

you are spot on there irishmetalhead, typo on my part. Bought a copy of computer shopper and came across this as a guide

    http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTVIEWPAGE&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&KEY=937413

Is the German hardware site the cheapest around or is it referenced here a lot because it is a one stop shop?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

950W X-Power Desktop Power Supply... I don't like the sound of that.
Also a 5400 RPM hard drive?

    Is that your budget?

Hardwareversand just has a good selection (as in good range for low or high budget) along with the prices being fairly low. Occasionally, some of the UK sites such as scan.co.uk can be beat the price, but it depends on what you are looking for. Note that HWV only accept bank transfer as payment (or paypal at +3%, making it less worth it).

that build is horribly unbalanced (950 watt way too much overkill)
also i wouldnt trust that brand of psu at all plus the the whole build itself seems way overpriced compared to what hwvs can offer you.
i'll spec you out a comp in the morning when i'm more sobber ;)
    XD

edit: also i just noticed that build also dosn't have an ssd so that makes it even more overpriced than i originally thaught D=

Specced out a PC simular to the one you linked but with a more relible power supply, an SSD and a corsair h50 (all in one cpu water cooler) but has less ram (4GB is all yhour going to need) and it's still cheaper than that one you posted including shipping and the build and software installation services (if you don't want to build it yourself of course) :D

Bit-Tech do a good hardware buyers guide every month, I'd pretty much go with what they recommend. Here's a link for the feb guide -
    http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/buyers-guide/2011/02/10/pc-hardware-buyer-s-guide-february-2011/1

Overall price for their gaming rig is £915 sterling with hdd and everything else, using a i5 2500k cpu (overclocks very well) and a MSI GTX560 twin frozer graphics card (very very good card for the money).
As said by others, there's no need for 8 gig of ram. Most games rely on the graphics card more than cpu, so pointless upgrading cpu etc and keeping old graphics card and the improvements will be virtually non in games. If your into your fps games, then you'll want to get a nice new card like one above in time for Battlefield 3 in the autumn, which'll make use of your new hardware unlike the COD games.

Thanks a lot Irishmetalhead for the spec and taking the time to do it. I will go for everything on that with the exception of the sata drive, and as they say, reuse, recycle :D

I also have someone that should be able to put this together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

you sure about the case tho cause i only went with the exact same case as the one that you linked us to so you should just look through hwvs and see if there is anyother cases you'd prefer because thats where asthetics count =]
no to sy the v9 is ugly because i still think it's a nice looking case myself

how about machine gun torrent mounted on it ;)

The Super-Flower SF650P14XE Golden Green Pro 80plus gold is only just under €3 more. Not modular, but a lot more efficient and is from a definite reliable line. There's not that much info on the Atlas Design, as far as I see, but it's probably fine.

    ordering tonight!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,485 ✭✭✭omerin

placed an order but did it component by component. Later i saw the pc configurator, should I have used that instead? :( I say that because its probably better for them to assemble then a friend of mine who wouldn't be the most reliable and doesn't have sufficent funds that i could sue him if it didn't work out :D
I did select the assemble option on the order. btw it only displayed a different motherboard when i went to configure the pc, is that because it only shows stock parts. the one irishmetalhead recomended has a 7 day lead time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

don't worry about the pc configurator if still have the build service in your basket they'll still assemble it for you (you'll still have to mount the cpu cooler and graphics card yourself tho), it's also better to select your comonents seperatly because they try and ristrict your options through pc configurator for some bizzare reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,485 ✭✭✭omerin

went with the sata drive aswell. Thanks again for the list.

Why don't they install the graphics and cooler?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

because there very large and quite heavy so they don't want to risk shipping the pc with them installed incase they snap out and cause alot of damage but don't worry it's really easy to install them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,485 ✭✭✭omerin

Fair enough. Looking forward to getting this now, probably take 2 weeks although the board is showing at over 7 days delivery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,485 ✭✭✭omerin

The m/board is delayed, they originally had delivery on the 15/3, now they are waiting for a delivery date

This would be ok as an alternative on the same spec that irishmetalhead has above, only difference is the bluetooth and the slight increase in price.

    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=43845&agid=1601

Is it hassle to change the spec, considering that i have already transfered the money? I suppose theres no chance they wouldn't charge the extra.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,485 ✭✭✭omerin

Just noticed the price increases on the site

The grahics card has increased to 297 from 289, but the ram and m/board has fallen. If you made a list in the last few days you might want to look again at prices

PC landed yesterday and all but the processor cooler and hd format were assembled

PC looks great, ratings of 7.9 on graphics & ssd and 7.6 on ram and processor, i will upload this screen when i get the internet up & running. Currently my intellinet usb dongle won't connect to the internet, though it is visible :( Downloaded the Win 7 drivers but it only gives limited connectivity and its not possible to connect to internet. New dongle required me thinks

Massive big thanks to Irishmetalhead for spec'ing the pc

were you able to install the cpu cooler without a hasstle tho?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,485 ✭✭✭omerin

It was straight forward enough, and i'd say if i could do it anyone could. My only fear was cracking the m/board when i was taking the other one off :D

    Internet up and running now

This has near the same voltage and timings as your original kit.
    http://www.memoryc.com/computermemory/ddr3ram/4gbgeilpc3128001600mhzvaluepluscl9dualchannelkit2x2.html
    Free delivery BTW.

Alternatively, you could just get 8GB for ~€55 and sell the 4GB that you have. You'd be less likely to have compatibility issues although you should be okay regardless.
