Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

fodder beet

    i was thinking of buying fodder beet at 40 euro a ton delivered to ensure my silage pit lasts but never feed it before. i wondering is it much good in feed value as i want to feed it to spring calving sucker herd.i can get loan off a feeder to chop it or should i just feed rolled barley.

    fodder beet has a very high water content so the feed value would not be as good as rolled barley.
    if it is,nt chopped properly it can be a choking hazard for cows.

    rolled barley would be less work than chopping all that beet.

    I've seen a lot of fodder beet piled up in yards in the last week and it hasn't been protected from frost. Feeding frosted beet to cattle isn't the best also beet damaged by frost after being harvested is bad for cattle. Before they said to harvest beet in November and don't feed it until the New Year, not possible this year due to weather so all the beet is freshly pulled. I wouldn't feed freshly pulled beet to cattle. High DM beet needs cleaning as its root grows into the soil, low DM beet doesn't need as much cleaning as most of it's root grows above ground.
