Was driving form Dublin to Galway last week. Noticed that the new motorway looks almost ready to roll. Any indication of when it will opened? Also, Will the N6 from Kilbeggan to Kinneaggead become the M6. Why doesnt it have motorway status yet?

The NRA site has the scheme to open Q3 2008, don't know any more than that.

The Kinnegad -> Kilbeggan section has a motorway order out on it, so should become M6. But it needs the rest bays removed, the dashed hard shoulder marking changed to solid, and the signs changed before that can happen.

    Nice long thread here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055146978
It appears that the laybys are to remain as there are a couple on the unopened section.

End of June for opening is the unofficial news from that thread. Probably will open with 100kmh and blue signs with no motorway restrictions (like the Carlow bypass got the 120s taken down the day before opening). This is until the reclassification officially goes through.

The remaining bit of N road (east of Moate, dont know the names), will probably keep the green signs till all this goes through.

Heard today that its June 24th opening, hope thats right. It certainly looks ready to go up on the Moate side at least.

When the new "N6" is redesignated to M6 later this year, will the old road revert to N6, I know many of the signs along the section between Kinnegad & Athlone have already been changed to "R" signs.

    Will the N6 reappear?

No. It will become the R446.

You can't have a seperate road called the N6 running alongside the M6 as in law the M6 is the N6.

Expect the old roads speed limit to also drop to 80kph unless the various county councils pass by laws to bring the speed limit back to 100kph.

The Toll Boots have to be built before the road opens,

The toll booths will be to the west of Ballinasloe.

M4,Dublin - Kilcock (free), Kilcock - Kinnegad (toll) M/N6, Kinnegad - Ballinasloe (free), Ballinasloe - Galway(Toll), two tolls :( will be a bit pricy for those who do the trip frequently.
