It wasn't MMA. Was just a boxing match with 4oz gloves in a cage. Morrison didn't prove anything with this fight.

    exactly....
Rules prohibited any kind of ground fighting, and as the card at the Cliff Castle Casino was about to commence it was announced that knees, elbows, or kicks of any kind would be disallowed during the Morrison-Stover fight, which was scheduled for three three-minute rounds.

Sure what's left only punches really?

    Hi all,

there's a guy on sherdog forums saying Morrison whipped @ss in mma...lol

Stover should have walked in my opinion...the promoters organised an MMA fight that was altered to be nothing more than a a boxing match with mma gloves in a ring

A former boxing champ versus an MMA guy...and Stover is hardly a big name in MMA...much like Brock lesnar's first opponent...

got this info from bouncing around other sites:
No disrepect to Morrison's boxing ability but he wasn't cleared medically [blood tests re: hiv apparently], the paperwork was never handed in and supposedly that is the reason they took away ground work, knees and elbows and left only punches...it would be less bloody...

    ciao

Actually it was not boxing rules as clinch was allowed but it was made to suit the boxer-mainly boxing and dirty boxing-stand up grappling.

No knees, kicks, elbows, slams, subs or ground fighting certainly means not mma. Another example of boxing trying to piggyback on the success of mma.

It was a boxing and dfirty boxing match with 4oz gloves in a cage. Apparently he hasnt passed his AIDS test certifiably yet which means that whoever let him get in the ring is a complete moron.

Everyone knows this was not an mma fight, but tommy taking this fight has nothing to do with boxing. its all got to do with tommy trying to earn a few quid, he's out of boxing too long and wont generate interest unless he gets press-which he has, either way if he gets offered a big payday by a don king or dana white he'll be a happy man-him beating some bum in a genuine boxing match would not get any major press, as its what you would expect-he done this a few months ago and now he's trying this route. Boxing is doing fine and the fact that the mma world is excited by morrison shows the difference in interest.

I think the only reason anyone in mma circles has an interest in this is because Chuck Liddell mumbled out his name on that Good Morning America interview when he was out of it on sleepers.

AS for boxing doing fine, I have to disagree. Boxing would be far better off not trying to directly compete with mma and looking after its own. If u follow this debate through youtube, most boxing commentators try to dismiss mma as "human cockfighting" which is the greatest load of BS.

In MMA when the fights over its over, it doesnt endanger the lives of its participants by having standing counts etc etc. Boxing is more brutal in terms of the long term brain damage (which is obvious if u listen to these idiots trying to call mma cockfighting - theyre obviously brain damaged if thats their best analogy!!) while MMA is more bloody due to the elbows. Give me a cut over taking repeated clubbing blows to my head any day.

I have seen boxing commentators already try to justify this as a victory for boxing over mma which is a joke....if u saw the fight, Morrisson wore boxing shoes in the ring as well!!

What's worse is that he tested positive in the 90's for HIV and his opponent actually got in the cage with him. Now THAT'S stupid.

Neil most commentators dont understand mma-ask you parents or someone who has never seen it to view it once and ask them what they think?
Boxing does not need to compete with mma, the point is sold out for bernard dunnes fight and people are paying to see 1 bantam weight fighter-if we had a heavyweight at this level we would fill croke park-in the advertising for the dunne fight i never heard mma mentioned! Boxing events are easy to sell and are on all the time worldwide-if your 1 of the people that think boxing is dying then im going to start laughing at you-right now hahahahahaha etc...
by the way-i love mma also so am not been anti mma, the fact is any boxing name will generate big interest-especially in a different sport.

I dont think boxing is DYING at all, but u cant deny its in decline compared to the 70's, 80's and 90's. Bernard Dunnes fight will sell out granted, but u gotta remeber that us Irish will flock to see any of our own in any sport regardless of how little or how much we actally know about the sport. It cant be denied that boxing doesnt have the same pull it had even 10 years ago when the likes of Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis etc were dukin it out?? De la Hoya vs Mayweather was the biggest fight that the international boxing scene has done in years and after that, now what?!! How many really big fights are out there that the CASUAL boxing fan would be drawn to?? The Americans wont accept Ricky Hatton even though he's regarded as one of the few who could challenge Mayweather. MMA has so many really big matchups that we are yet to see and only a handful of these are rematches.

Case in point Sonia O Sulliva, Michelle Smith/ de Brun (shes not ours!!!!) Ken Doherty, Steve Collins etc etc etc how many of the people who would pay to fill an arena to see these people are BIG fans of those respective sports. Not bashing boxing at all, just tryin to get u to look at the Dunne thing from a different angle.

As regards the ignorance to mma, i completely agree. I only talk to people who I know understand it because other people get some sort of idiotic preconceived notion that ur an animal!! Boxing pundits need to shut the fu*k up talking about mma when they have no clue about it. U dont see Rugby Union commentators dissing Rugby league on tv (i know they do privately!). Why is boxing so intimidated by mma? Surely they can co exist no?!! I know u will say that mma pundits talk about boxing but at least they are in a better position to talk about it since MMA involves boxing training. 99.9999% of boxing commentators wouldnt know a kimura from a rashguard.....

Boxing like any sport would miss the likes of Ali-Tyson ETC.. but at the moment there is pacquoa, barrera, morales, hatton, mayweather, calzaghe, just to name a few that any fight fan would be interested in, boxing always goes through peaks and truffs-i think it is starting to peak again-even at its lowest its still massive! a lot of boxing commentators are confused by mma and probably feel under attack as Dana White always has a go at boxing whenever he needs airtime! there not really interested in mma! im younger and am more open minded-watching mma as an untrained person is weird-i used to hate ground fights till i trained bjj and i never liked kicking till i trained muay thai, boxing is still my favourite but they all make up mma, boxing is appealing to everybody because its something that comes naturally even to babys-really, ever see babys fighting! i wish the mma fans would stop jumping on the dana white wagon and enjoy combat sports such as boxing and k1, most young boxing fans like mma as its like an extension to boxing.

and in regards to sonia o sullivan-it would be free to watch her as you stand by the road and i still never went-the boxing stadium will be packed when the all ireland amateur boxing is on and this is hardcore boxing fans. other amateur sports cant pull in paying punters like this.
