This incident happened 4 months ago, but the Governor of SC only released any sort of statement about it today, and only in response to the release of the video:

No indication from anyone that a grand jury is investigating, or if the good old boys have all just cleared themselves of wrongdoing and offered thoughts and prayers and pinky promises to do better next time with "more focus on mental health."

No indication the officers were suspended or placed under review, either, and this would seem to indicate they still have their jobs.

I honestly have no idea how policing in America can be fixed. It is so badly broken at this point. Tragedy after tragedy.

Putting a mentally ill man through the normal custodial and judicial system is inhumane. They should have handled this with far more sensitivity. Then to taze him eight times when trying to remove him from his cell is cruel. He was so vulnerable and they treated him like a rag doll. He need the protection of a more compassionate system. We need to see more of the footage.

Former Charleston County Detention Deputy Lindsay Fickett, who was fired in connection to Jamal Sutherland’s death investigation, said that she prefers using a Taser over other methods of pain compliance in a 2018 deposition.

The deposition was a part of a lawsuit filed against more than a dozen employees of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. In the lawsuit, a former inmate accused Fickett of improperly using her Taser.

According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff was mostly restrained in an emergency restraint chair. When the inmate refused to place her arm in the restraint, Fickett applied her Taser in drive-stun mode to the woman’s arm.

This seems to show that officers were being overly liberal with their use of the taser. Five seconds seems like a long time for the taser to be activated for. He shouldn't have been put in that position. There has been big protests in the last few days.

Training the military mindset out of them would be a start.

A lot of the police force in the US have received most of their training from the military.

In fact just actually training them would be a start.

Some departments give recruits a badge and a gun after 10’weeks.

There are no national standards with regards training standards. That’s badly needed. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/police-training-weeks-united-states/#app
