Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    3w = 45 so w =15
    3s = 21 so s = 7
    3b = 12 so b = 4

    7 X 4 = 28
    28 + 15 = 43

There are 4 brooms in that line, look closer.

    BOMDAS bitches!

    Edit: 73 I reckon.

    (I had 63 but I mathed wrong)

Purple leprechaun holding starry wand and wooden spoon = 15
    Starry wand = 7
    Wooden spoon = 4

Wooden spoon + purple leprechaun (minus starry wand and wooden spoon) x starry wand

Purple leprechaun (minus starry wand and wooden spoon) = 4

    4 X 7 = 28
    28+4 = 32

Not sure it is. Is there 3 or 4 brooms in the line. Hard to see on the phone but looks like 4 ?

But obviously you spotted the hands

It's funny how everyone hates these when you replace the symbols with X, y and z.

I am a maths teacher and I introduce algebra with emojis. If I said 3 smile faces equal 21, what is the value of a smile face, they all say 7. But as soon as I substitute the smile face for an X or even more confusing a Y, they lose. the. plot.

The double wand is tough to see. Had to zoom in massively on the phone to see it - but yes it’s there

Well spotted !!! I would not mind but spec savers gave me the all clear just before the virus :-) need to go back I think

It's a low res photo as it is. I saw the doubles because of the 15" laptop screen I'm using. On a phone it would be a different story I'm sure.

So it’s not really a math problem. In emoji maths does one emoji holding another signify something?

So is 73 the answer OP?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

    I'm getting 73.

A star is 7; a broom is 3 - so far so easy, once your realise there are four brooms.

If three witches holding a star and broom is 45, then one witch holding a star and broom is 15.

If you take away the star and broom then you're left with the witch on her own being 5.

    5 x 7(2) = 70 + 3 = 73.

I blame phone screen for not seeing items on top of each other.....

    73

    That is:-

    3+5x(7+7) = 3+5x14 = 3+70 =73

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

I'm on a laptop and didn't notice the two brooms, two stars or empty-handed witches to start with! I can't even blame that I'm using a phone.

I won't lie. I looked up the answer on YouTube lol.
I get it but the actual math question is a little confusing.

You could read it as broom (3) + wizard (5) = 15 then multiply that (15) by two wands (14) and that would be 210.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy it :) it's just a little tricky even with the two wands and brooms which are drawn very subtle. Lol.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,888 ✭✭✭chooseusername

    3+(5X14)=73

Fundamental rule in maths - multiple and divide before you add and subtract

You are multiplying the 3 and 5 and it’s a plus sign between them. So if that’s what’s on YouTube, I really need to go to spec savers again when it opens - phone or not !!!

    Nein.

Probably not. The image is highly pixelated and low resolution so would give that appearance.

I would imagine this is designed to be solved while looking at a reasonably quality image.

Can the OP provide one please?

    1 surely.

That could be rewritten as 6/2(1+2)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,708 ✭✭✭Feisar

    They are all the same.

There is a catch if you don’t look closely enough and then it catches out those that don’t know one is supposed to multiply and divide before adding and subtracting.

So basically they tell you two things, those that were drunk doing them or those that shouldn’t be allowed vote.

First they came for the socialists...

Assuming it's 2 multiplied by what's in the brackets, yes.

Bones (of) my dear Aunt Sally, I believe was the phrase that pays?

    Brackets
    Multiplication
    Division
    Aaddition
    Substraction

The middle bit would need to be 54 in order to get 9.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.
