This morning parts of UK Airspace were closed as the ash erupted from the Eyjafjol volcano (starting yesterday) drifted across it. Ths stuff is pretty deadly if it gets into aircraft engine intakes.

The airspace closure so far affects Scotland and NI so far but the cloud is drifting south.

Current visible imagery shows strong drifting ash plumes north of scotland.

Eyjafjallajokull could bang on for years...or stop tomorrow. Its neigbour Ole Dirty Bastard could possibly erupt too. I thought it was time to open a thread to monitor this ash cloud and the volume and force of the eruption because Icelandic volcanos can have a profound effect on weather and always have done.

At 2300 on 13 April, a seismic swarm was detected below the central part of Eyjafjöll, W of the previous eruption fissures. About an hour later, the onset of seismic tremor heralded an eruption from a new vent on the S rim of the central caldera, capped by Eyjafjallajökull glacier. The eruption was visually confirmed early in the morning on 14 April; an eruption plume rose at least 8 km above the glacier. Meltwater flowed to the N and S. News outlets reported that a circular ice-free area about 200 m in diameter was seen near the summit. Scientists conducting an overflight saw a new 2-km-long, N-S-trending fissure, and ashfall to the E. About 700 people were ordered to evacuate the area, and certain flights were banned from flying N and E of the eruption area. Flooding increased throughout the day, causing road closures and some structural damage.

Geologic Summary. Eyjafjöll (also known as Eyjafjallajökull) is located immediately west of Katla volcano. Eyjafjöll consists of an E-W-trending, elongated ice-covered basaltic-andesite stratovolcano with a 2.5-km-wide summit caldera. Fissure-fed lava flows occur on both the eastern and western flanks of the volcano, but are more prominent on the western side. Although the 1666-m-high volcano has erupted during historical time, it has been less active than other volcanoes of Iceland's eastern volcanic zone, and relatively few Holocene lava flows are known. The sole historical eruption of Eyjafjöll, prior to an eruption in 2010, produced intermediate-to-silicic tephra from the central caldera during December 1821 to January 1823.

The Excellent Icelandic Weather site is monitoring progress of the volcano. Keep an eye on that as your primary source. There was a recent plan to install a weather radar in Eastern Iceland ( they only have one in the west) PRIMARILY to detect Ash from icelandic Volcanoes but it has not been installed yet.

Oslo hs just been closed completely/

All air traffic to and from Oslo Airport are cancelled from 10:00 a.m. due to the ash from the volcanic eruption in Iceland. All passengers are encouraged to check with their airline for further information. We'll be back with more information as the situation develops.

Even if the airports re-open in the next few hours the backlog is going to be horrendous.

Is it likely that flights from london to dublin tomorrow morning will be cancelled. How long can we expect there to be no air travel between dublin and london.

This is fun.
I'm in London for work, and I'm due to fly home tonight and back out on Monday to London.

It'll be a bit weird not hearing any planes in London...

The footage I've seen of the meltwater is thoroughly scary as well.

Advisories are issued by a global network of Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres and the UK Met Office hosts the UK and Ireland ( and Atlantic) centre.

From looking at it i reackon each is a boundary to which Flight Level the Ash Extends to. For anyone unfamiliar to them, e.g. FL250 = 25000FT and so on.

The Blue is for more dense ash cloud, I think the red is for less dense traces of ash.

Is volcanic ash valuable ... maybe the UK government could try and gather as much as possible and take it as payment for all the lost deposits from the Islandic banks!!!

AS of now.. there are NO planes over the island of Ireland. Quite a rarity i guess:)

Edit: and typical the last plane to cross Ireland was from...... Iceland !!

I was due to fly to England via Finland in jan, flight got canceled due to snow, now I'm off to the Snooker in Sheffield on Saturday, and flights could be canceled due to ASH!

she's actually flying via Amsterdam, connecting with AerLingus .. and I see aer lingus have cancelled all flights from Amsterdam, apart from the very last one tonight .. so far.

Stockholm is now totally closed !!!

So with the lack of con trails, will it mean the temp will rise?

Wierd not seeing any trails usually there are at least 1 every minute and sometimes 5 or 6.

I remember reading about the Laki volcano eruption my 1st year undergrad course. It had a profound effect on life in Europe. A dry haze that persisted for months. Summers were hot, but winters were cold. Famine and death also resulted. If I remember correctly that particular eruption occurred along side other big eruptions across the globe.

I am trying to find that particular book on the net to link. If I find it I will post later. It had a synoptic overview of the entire 1780's. Patterns became jarred with very frequent northern blocking post eruption. :eek:

well you couldnt see them anyway in dub with all the cloud.
Hope there is a LARGE increase in temps
