Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sometimes it's good to remind ourselves why we do what we do and who knows, maybe this will inspire others to go vegan!
*note* Since this is boards, let's aim to keep this thread SFW/ non-graphic. In a way it is a pity to hide the truth, gorey details and all, but we are still bound by the site-wide rules here. If there is something more graphic you want to share, link to it indirectly and mark it as such (I may be open to correction on that but for now we'll proceed like that).
Please don't quote pictures/videos!! Since this is going to be a picture/video heavy thread we don't want to slow it down even more, please think of the country folk with the slow internets :P Also please be aware of picture size, make sure your pictures are small enough to read comfortably on a laptop (about 600/700 px wide)

I'm always amazed when kids demonstrate such profound understanding and awareness, then again, as we get older the more ingrained the values we've been thought by our society, our environment and our up-bringing become. But why follow the crowd, be an independent thinker, educate yourself and then decide for yourself, if we do that then I think we would find most people are not inherently cruel.

Good idea for a thread, we can all get inspiration from the bad that happens, and also the good that comes from people helping.
we all share the same feelings, happiness but also pain and I think these videos show a bit of happiness

'After the winter season this cow-herd (included some young cows, which are not jet started to give milk, and never need to, and one bull) are coming out to the open field again. At this moment, is is a few months ago, that there are saved from slaughterhouse by the neighborhood. Usually, cows are happy when they get out in spring, but these cows are happier than the average dairy cow (they have no more stress in their live, from giving milk until their body is leached out, or from losing their children) and you can feel their special happiness in the video.'

And there has always been pet cows at home over the years. Trouble is most people see a difference between pets and food. I even hate to use the word pet there because it has misleading connotations, but alas I don't know what else to say.

Unfortunately he doesn't really practice these thoughts, inspiring words nonetheless. I would draw some similarities between veganism and astrophysics myself; being an independent thinker, understanding at a very fundamental level, understanding the universe and life in it. I think you would have to be some kind of robot to study astrophysics and not have a profound respect for life. It's no surprise that many of the world's well-known scientists are advocates for vegetarianism and veganism.0 -

Great post, he's right in that whenever research into animals is done, there is one theme that always is prevalent: The animals are smarter than we gave them credit for. People think so little of them and it is nonsense, we all evolved together and are remarkably similar, yet somehow people seem to think animals are robots that can't think nor feel.
We have a duty to be responsible for the beings on this planet, to be custodians over it and the other animals within. We are the self proclaimed intelligent species, we should be looking after other animals and the planet, not causing them harm and abusing that power.

With the atrocities that humans commit against each other and a lot of ethical thinking still in it's infancy I am sometimes even surprised that animals are getting the attention they are, and am glad of it. May it increase dramatically. Even Neil above suffers cognitive
dissonance but over time more people will be open to things and it won't be "a big deal" to be vegan.
It may not be accepted as normal now but one day veganism will be, and it's changing faster than it has ever in humanity's history.

Richard Dawkins interview with Peter Singer on morality and veganism. Peter Singer is a lecturer that specialises in applied ethics and wrote "Animal Liberation". Dawkins is of the view that the next big ethical thing to happen after destruction of human slavery, is animal slavery.
Dawkins view is that veganism is morally correct but doesn't feel "bold enough" to make the change, that he goes along with it as tradition.
Even Peter Singer, following the trend above by --LOS-- is not completely vegan.I don't eat meat. I've been a vegetarian since 1971. I've gradually become increasingly vegan. I am largely vegan but I'm a flexible vegan. I don't go to the supermarket and buy non-vegan stuff for myself. But when I'm traveling or going to other people's places I will be quite happy to eat vegetarian rather than vegan.

About EstherEsther is a pig. That's really all we know since she was misrepresented as a "micropig". She was born in Summer of 2012 to what we believe was a commercial farm litter. She was somehow removed. Perhaps because she was a runt. Somehow she found her way to us.
We hope this page will make you take a minute to re-evaluate some of your consumption habits. We always seem to prefer the "I'd rather not think about it" approach. If you took just a few minutes to learn how brutal life is for these loving, intelligent and compassionate animals, I know it would change your mind and maybe even convince you to lead a cruelty free and compassionate lifestyle.

Ever see animals solving logical puzzles, the likes of crows are amazingly smart, a big brain isnt everything.
Every time they do these tests they always discover the animal was smarter than the thought.
Crows making tools to solve a problem! and there is one that made cats fight and watched it for its amusement.
The likes of fish were always seen as stupid but they have been shown to have complex behavior, even "eavesdropping" on other fish to learn where food is and so on from scents they would learn. More traditional eavesdropping is to hear fish that are predators and avoid them. The more I learn about animals the more interesting and complex they are seen to be.0 -

Who'dve thunk that evil heavy metal maniacs would have a more compassionate side to 'em? An interesting read...we contacted five wellknown musicians from the extreme Metal underground in order to talk to them about their vegetarian / vegan lifestyle... Being vegetarians / vegans ourselves, we know about the necessity to explain this ethical and healthy lifestyle to other people as well, so our sincere thanks goes out to Mille (KREATOR), Tom (TRIPTYKON), Barney (NAPALM DEATH), Angela (ARCH ENEMY) and Leif (DEW-SCENTED), who immediately supported the idea of this special. Don't get us wrong, we are certainly not here to preach, we just wanna show you that being a vegetarian / vegan in this business is more than cool and that you can respect our fellow earthlings and be successful and real healthy at the same time... Hope you'll enjoy this feature as much as we enjoyed doing it!
For how long do you live as a vegan or vegetarian now?
Mille: "I have been a vegan for four years."
Angela: "I have been vegan for about 2 years now... I kinda stopped eating milk products and eggs step by step."
Barney: "I went vegetarian 29 years ago, and I started moving closer to veganism only 5 or so years ago, actually. I live at home as a vegan because I have complete control over my diet and I can balance it out, but on the road it is a lot harder to do that without missing out on some essential dietary elements."
Leif: "I have been a vegetarian since the early 90s, so basically 20 years by now!"
Have the vegans among you started out (like almost anyone else) as vegetarians first?
Mille: "Yes!"
Angela: "Yes, I grew up vegetarian. My parents were pretty alternative and different from the mainstream. I moved out early and tried meat. Didn't like it, didn't make me feel good, so I reverted back to being a vegetarian."
Barney: "Yes, embracing vegetarianism is in itself a progressive process - I think you'll find few people who jump in 100% right away. The meat tends to go first, then maybe the dairy, then leather and suede and animal-tested products etc."

^Animals showing empathy in general is very inspiring. "The superior human" gets that across pretty well too, the whole question of why humans are superior to other animals. It's kind of a boring watch though

Having a certain body part more highly developed than another seems to be most people's argument of why humans are superior to other animals. In the case of humans, the brain. Animals trade highly developed brains for other abilities that humans don't have, or for a brain that is more highly developed than humans in some certain aspect. I don't understand how having on average a more highly developed brain could make us superior. And most people don't either. We don't practice that thinking when it comes to autistic people for instance. Their brains seem to be typically highly developed in some areas, so they're often extremely talented individuals, but they trade that for under-developed communication skills. I don't know if anyone caught the Late Late show last week (I know I'm very into irish things when I'm abroad ¬_¬ ), a guy called Martin Finn was on there. He has severe autism, cannot talk, cannot pretty much do anything........besides sing. How he is able to sing and know all the lyrics is kind of amazing. His parents take him to the cd shop so much that he knows straight away if there's anything new on the shelves. He just reminded me of animals. He can't communicate but nobody is taking advantage of him because of that. Everyone around him is doing everything they can to protect him and make his life easier, so we're not completely heartless, we do this for people, why don't we do this for animals. It might still be on the rte player if you're interested in the interview with his folks etc but you can see his performance on the show here........

Ye I came across that story too, but it's just one elephant after all, and even if I do like to read happy stories about individual animals that were rescued, I don't like when cruelty stories focus on one animal and especially ones we don't eat. And the same people that will go omg that poor elephant, won't think twice about elephant rides/camel rides etc while on holidays. The trouble with stories like this, they always make it sound like an isolated thing, they're not even using one elephant as an example to get a bigger message across. Most news stories I've read on it just finish up like...and then Raju lived happily ever after.0 -

I've never really needed to look stuff up for inspiration since going vegan but I was looking through my favourites on youtube recently and watched this video again, everything on her channel is great btw.'And with that I'll go onto the ultimate morality test in my opinion, where you don't need to shift anything around to work out how you genuinely feel. The thing is we know what's right and wrong and if you imagine at the end of your life, you're in a boardroom and Alan Sugar, Donald Trump or, I dunno. God. Tells you, "I played a trick on you, I made you think you were in a world full of other human beings, when actually these were just characters in a kind of virtual reality and I did this to test the strength of your morality because I gave you a very strong sense of right and wrong and I wanted to see, whether you would bother putting that into practice within an environment where you believed other people didn't, and you had every opportunity to go with the minority, who did the right thing, but you chose for convenience to go with the majority, just for convenience when you knew deep down what you were doing was wrong.'
