Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Jewellery and low life’s

So a thing I have noticed is that those of a lower economic demographic have a tendency to try dress themselves up with gaudy looking gold rings, bracelets and chains.

When I see some thug with both hands having multiple rings on, 2 big thick gold chains etc I just think that even if they can legitimately afford the gold, they clearly have no taste or self respect.

Asking the good folks of AH, do you reckon that the amount of jewellery worn is inversely proportional to someone’s social class?

It is inversely proportional, and ostentatious jewellery and designer clothes with prominent logos have always been considered common.

Are sovereign rings still a thing? The insignia of a scummer.

The guy who cuts my lawn never wears less than two chunky gold chains and many large rings. He's the fool Mr T. pities.

    Nah, he's a lovely guy.

The thick gold chain was always a bad look for men.

A kinda faux 'hard man' look. Not good.

Those traveller ‘call out’ videos always feature lots of gold necklaces and medallion rings. You’d see it in those rap videos as well.

Are we doing the social class thing now?

I dislike the English class system, and the Indian caste system is abhorrent. Are we judging people on their jewellery?

Can't stand those big, hoopy earrings on women, I'm always looking for the exception to the rule when I see them in the street or on tv, but it never happens.

The biggest turn off to me is middle classes wearing gaudy Ralph Lauren Polo shirt s and Tommy Hilfiger Jean's yeauchhh

This rubbish is made of the same material penny's and dunnes Polo shirt s are made of.

So I'd respect someone who's wearing penny's and dunnes Polo shirt s more than the middle class wannabe toffs spending money on a label and making a Fool out of themselves...

As for jewelry the middle classes are a bit more subtle than the working class but at the end of the day, the working class work harder for their gold...

So in effect I think anyone who's looking down on someone for their choice of tribal finery should be having a good look at why they're offended by someone's jewels....

    You are so wrong.....

Fine thing with jet black hair and a hoop is anything but something anyone could stand....

My exe was very old money South Dublin and she used to love wearing hoopy earrings and she certainly had the look of a gypsy about her.

I don't think there's any thing wrong with that look, actually I think it's really sexy...
She used to and probably still loves her white gold and platinum jewelry....

Lot's of upper class English women wear hoopy gold earrings and necklaces.

Especially when they're on an excursion to the farmers markets and hang out with the bohemian type's.....

Hoopy earrings, I think they're hot....

I agree with the OP. I mean, just look at what some of those low-life pimps used to wear. Fishtank bloody shoes.

Good point, know a guy who worked for a huge clothing manufacturer ( won’t name company) anyway they changed their fabric to something inferior and cheaper to produce but still stuck on their famous designer label and of course people still bought it because of the name. That’s the way the world works . I buy if I like the item, style and fabric, nothing else.

I'd agree with you there, but I go for the Hilfiger trousers I can get for 1 Euro in the local charity shops over that expensive stuff from Penneys!:p;)
As for the Ralph Lauren/Lacoste posers, I think all polo shirts are trash. No exceptions.

If everyone could have diamonds, they wouldn't be worth anything. No woman would care about them much.

That's the terrible thing about it - it's based on exclusivity. It also ends up with children dying in mines, it's well known in the diamond trade. It's sick.

when you see scumbags wearing big huge gold college rings when they barely finished primary let alone secondary school is a sure sign of mental illness and chav sheep mentality.

another is a football jersey, with the gold necklace on the outside, usually dangling a pair of boxing gloves or some tacky word like "nike".

I despise gold, only wear silver, and my wedding ring is white gold.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,031 ✭✭✭✭Del2005

I always thought that they wore big rings as carrying weapons is illegal here.

Diamonds are pretty common. The reason for their popularity is almost entirely down to marketing. Outside of extremely large or unusually coloured gems they have feck all resale value.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

By the by, I don't by RL either ridiculous price but there is now way there fabrics is the same as Penney's.

    Poor life choices in general.

People are being too hard on the OP watching other tribes is an interesting pastime.

Also on boards, there is a hierarchy of commenting, yummy mummies in massive 4 wheel drive its grand to comment about, Dub or other in gold chains the poster is a snob or up themselves for having an opinion.

No always the case, something I can across in a former life....This is difitinely a Dub thing and possible a Celtic tiger thing...BMW man, own small bussiness could be anything tyers, fitted wardrobes/kitchens done well for themselvs and now drives a BMW not always a new one though.

It's just a class thing. Not to be confused with wealth. Those are two very separate things. Those without class get confused and wear too much gold, some people even overgolding like the poor fecker in the image above.

Not if you like it, nó.

Unless you've a ring in your septum, you could have nothing else jewelery wise and that would still look ott... (could possibly just be a personal thing)

I've had my septum pierced for nearly 20 years! I wear a small black titanium ring so it's pretty subtle.

It is aspirational and show of wealth. Basically they are judged in their own circle and not having them shows you are poor. Socioeconomic groups judge internally as well as other groups.
Peer pressure effectively and while other socioeconomic groups think it looks cheap and tacky they simply think it looks good and identifies their group. Many of them think it makes them look intimidating which is basically all they have. When you have little perceived self worth and "respect" is all you have.
