Two of us fished Howth yesterday from kayaks. Other chap got one mack and I got zero!
Chatting to two lads on a boat behind Ireland's Eye and they had about twenty between them. Still very sporadic.
Lots of Pollock though. At times it was like hitting shoals of macks with a full house on every drop.

I was on the outside of Dún Laoghaire East pier yesterday. Didn't seem to be aything about, there was a few others along there too. Lads up the West didn't land any either. I'll be back out to other spots around Dublin over the next few weeks so there's time yet for the numbers to get bigger.

Hoping to do a little bit of angling for Mackeral in the coming weeks – have not fished for years but used to go to Ballyvaughan/Black Head and go from the rocks there, had some good evenings in the past but plenty of barren ones also.

Anyone on here been around that area recently and can tell me if I’m wasting my time?
    Thanks!

Was up that way over a week ago, spent couple of evening out, first was down around black head, just down from the lighthouse, was a bust. after that headed towards ballyvaughan and went off the rocks along that road, between 4 of us, we managed a whole pollock, decent enough size, but that was it. we had spent the best part of the day fishing off the rock just south of black head and then spend the end of the day up no the north side of it. Wasnt really a successful trip with the 1 fish, we were using a mix of mackeral and black lug for bait. will probably head further south towards carrigaholt or bridges of ross for next time out

Are you looking for rock fishing or beach mark's, North Clare fishes better from the middle of August up until late October..

Yes head southwards, much easier to catch fish from The Bridges of Ross around as far as Leabasheeda in the Estuary...
Plenty of marks you'll find them online.

Thousands of whitebait/sprat jumping on to the beach in Ballymoney, Wexford yesterday. Reckon there must be plenty of Mackrel along the coast chasing them in.

Slightly off topic but not entirely... any advice on what kind of rod I would need to fish for mackerel from rocks or piers? Planning a 2 week trip along the coast in west Cork and south Kerry soon, could be an interesting add on for the kids

The Shakespeare Agility MPV is a great multi purpose rod which will cover a variety of fishing types

Fished 1 hour up and 1 hour down at poolbeg today and didn't get any, only saw 1 person caught 2 mackerel while I was there and another guy got a decent smooth hound. Now I did catch 4 mackerel yesterday but it was on the boat, got 2 fishing around the Rockabill and another 2 outside the harbour off Lambay.

Here's a report from Mackerel reports thread on sea-angling-ireland.org:
    Postby GKC0806 » Sat Jul 25, 2020 3:36 pm

Just went for a walk with this Mrs along Poolbeg lighthouse pier - 2:30pm to 3:00pm, on the rising to full tide.
A dozen gents at the very end all flinging various mack sabikis and feathers and most catching a couple. One gent in particular obviously casting into a hotspot, as he had filled a large bag with >30, and a few gents were getting them in 3's and 4's at a time. In 20 minutes we sat there, we saw a fair bundle being landed.
All seemed around 30-40cm size, so fairly decent.

    So it's looking good atm!

I've a free day tomoro, anyone catching on east coast around Dublin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Had some in Greystones today but very bad weed suspended after the stronger winds. I'd say Coliemore would be worth a crack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 231 ✭✭willah

Caught 11 on Howth pier last Friday at high tide.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 685 ✭✭✭keepalive213

I have fished my usual spot (Annagh head) 3 times in the last month.
One day I got 2 good mackerel and a pollack.
    The other two times nothing.
It's shaping up same as the last 2 years, very few fish.
8-10 years ago you could fill the freezer.

Bar steward beside me, on the cliffs at Balscadden, pulled in about 20 medium to large ones today. I got zip!

That extra 10/15 feet on the cast made all the difference.

plenty of mackerel and a good size around kilmore lately with the angling boats. Had a few dozen myself some day last week .
''The coombe'' west of carne but its a place you will loose gear . Rosstoonstown at tacumshane is also a good spot and rarely loose gear . should be easy to fish now as northerly winds will clear the weed. High tide in the evenings is best . haven't been speaking to anyone to hear if any are being got or not off the beach but they should be there in next couple of weeks

Saw a few anglers on the beach at Furlongs Road near Kilmore yesterday evening. No idea if they were catching.

Picked up some small enough ones around Kilmore from the boat. They were very hard to get.

The previous day off Slade we got plenty of big ones in close to the rocks.

Macks numbers are getting fewer and fewer each year.

Their a bit better this year than last couple of years.
tried them myself yesterday , very patchy but nice fish .had a couple for dinner they're in good condition , very tasty . Heard the angling boats on the vhf yesterday saying they were plenty full east of ''the bridge'' . Friend of mine got a fish box full in half an hour yesterday evening just west of Forlorn point . Little f..kers you just can't tell where and when they'll decide to feed .

New to the fishing lads . What tides are best for pier fishing on east coast (Skerries & Howth ) ? am I right in saying that the high tide in the afternoon is not good . Want to bring the young lad down and try and get him interested in it .

    TIA for any advice .

Was out in clougherhead in the kayak on Saturday....not a thing! Think I'm done with that place!

Went around irelands eye yesterday evening and caught a few, bit patcy one or two a good size but others just mediocre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,207 ✭✭✭a148pro

Saw them swarming last night in achill at low tide. Have never seen fish in those numbers in ireland. All you had to do was lower feathers in and would take a few.

They also beached a few sprat which I took and ate tonight. Very tasty.

Has anyone ever eaten sprat out of the throat of the mackerel as there's usually one or two undigested there. Tempting as they're very tasty!

The worms you find in the flesh less tempting. I assume no health risk? It's annoying as I would like to eat some of it raw but probably should freeze it first to avoid them taking up residence in me?

Fish an hour before to an hour after high tide, any time of the day will do but it's best if you can get a high tide in the morning or evening!

Was back at the Kilkee cliffs in Clare there on Tuesday, got there about an hour before high tide and left an hour after the high point, came back with 31, some good sizes, some small too but ideal for bait for something bigger when the weather clears up
