Snorkel on a 4x4 - Landcruiser, Navara etc

Safari is the only make I can think of, usually a simple job to fit. They may know of more over on lcoc.ie

You can make your own, 63mm rainwater pipe with a mushroom top is the usual course, looks OK on an old Land Rover but you're better off with a proper one on a newer vehicle.

anyone know where you could get one of these for a 03-04 Navara and how much would you expect to pay for them? Delivered from abroad is also a possibility if ye know of somewhere.

The majority of 4x4s will wade up to 750mm without additional protection and you can keep this depth down by pushing a bow wave in front, charging in is asking for trouble.

Some things to bear in mind.

Where's the ecu? (Under the seat in a Defender :mad:)

Axle and gearbox breathers, how high do these go. All very well wading to top of bonnet but cold water gets sucked in to your transmission.

Wading plugs, some vehicles may need these in bell housing and timing case, RTFM!

A big heavy 4x4 can still float and be swept away (except Defender, got so many holes it fills up instead )

Make sure you properly seal the joints.

They do look cool though and you have the benefit of their actual use which is to pull clean dust free air in to engine, not that we get many dust storms here!

Whoops didnt see that thread. Its for one of the lads and he wants it cos it looks cool:cool: So the depth of water wont be much of a concern.

I'm fairly sure Safari (made in Australia) is your only choice but a bit of research may reveal others, they are starting to be copied. Devon 4x4 stock them as well.

No problem, that price is a real bargain and it comes with a decent fitting kit unlike the cheap Land Rover one.

Pretty handy to fit takes a couple of hrs once your fairly handy with tools
You will need a Step Drill

for wing and pillar holes

DO NOT USE

ordinary steel bits on the body of the jeep.

Before pic

ready to get going
Part number for my Hilux Surf

Template

major scary part is cutting the big hole. all i can say is measure 10 times then cut

A pillar holes easy to line up once snorkel is fitted

make sure and use lock Tite

A Pillar mount

All Done

After

Then sit back and relax

Scary drilling lots of holes in a wing! Make sure you treat the bare metal edges or you'll have rust streaks fairly quickly.

@Sean101; mine would be the twin of the one StephenMarr has in his pics, except that his looks like an SSRG with an intercooler, where mine is a lowly SSRX! They're a 3rd generation Toyota Hilux Surf (1996-2002) chassis KZN185.

@StephenMarr; who supplied yours, and roughly how much did it cost? Also, did you bother with diff breathers?

mine is an SSRX thats a ISUZU TROOPER bonnet vent fitted

didnt bother with diff breathers

cost me about €300 from DEVON 4x4 last year they have gone up in price though

try these there cheaper but i dont know what the quality is like

Stephen, your first link doesn't work

There's a lot of copies of the Safari snorkels but they are usually sightly thinner plastic and some rely on a good seal to the wing whereas Safari ones are piped right through (on Land Rovers anyway). Nothing wrong with that, just be aware there may be a bit more involved in sealing it properly, pays your money and takes your choice

One thing that does look bad on Safaris and others after a while is the bracket and fixings to the screen, they rust after a while. There's sellers on ebay offering s/s replacements or sort your own.

@StephenMarr: I've seen the ones on that Spanish site discussed on hiluxforums.co.uk before. They seem to be OK quality wise.
