Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Kieran Donaghy (Kerry) – 5 March
    Diarmuid Lyng (Wexford) – 12 March

    Yeah, as happens with these type of programmes the quality drops after a while. 161 episodes according to wikipiedia

    don't think its all about achievements, about their backgrounds and if they faced challenges etc.

    think he played in 4 all ireland finals and won a club all ireland, 1 of my favourites was the former Dublin footballer keiron duff and he only has 1 all ireland

    Browne got 2 all stars while playing football for Tipperary, thats no mean feat. Dont think lyng even has an all star.

    You'd know him if you listen to Off The Boil, Matt Cooper, various radio road shows etc etc. He's their go to pundit for a bit of light hearted Mayo gossip, humour, eejitry, 'poor us' whinging and whatnot. Coz you sure as $hit ain't getting anything insightful out of him.

    The coin he rakes in during AI final week would probably buy you a nice bungalow in a small to medium sized Midlands town. Replay, and you're looking at a swanky penthouse in D4.

    Was a good hurler, has sorta gone off grid and now lives back west of Dingle and has a unique look at life especially how he struggled with his identity post county player time.

    No harm that he speaks fluent gaeilge either.

    Good to see different characters and their story.

    They could easily do a newer job of versiond of the old shows. An hour long focus on the player not the team.

    David Brady has won a club All-Ireland. As he said himself "he's been a loser all his life but not today" To win a club All-Ireland is pretty significant especially in light of all the finals that he made it to and lost as a player. Should be a good watch

    Because the title of the show is Gaelic heroes is it not? Browne was an all star playing with a football team from the lower rankings. What he achieved was outstanding.
    Lyng played with one of the hurling counties in the top ten but I'd wager most people wouldn't have heard of him. Hardly a laochra Gael.

    He went a bit Rocky Balboa celebrating after that win too IIRC.:D

    To be fair to Mayo their story has not really featured on Laochra Gael all that much. The focus was always going to be on them sooner or later.

    Brady's may not be too bad. Ciaran Mcdonald's interview a few years ago was great TV.

I helped with the stats side, and everyone involved in its compilation were purely amateurs. Was a decent watch in the end, even speaking as someone from his biggest club rival :D

    He was profiled in one of the Sunday papers last week. Very good piece. If he was well known enough for that, am surprised at folk here not knowing who he is.

    Good interview by Joe Molloy with David Brady on Off the Ball tonight. It's even a bit emotional when he talks about his old mentor at school.

    Brady comes across as a decent fella and I'd say his Laochra Gael show will be a good watch.

    It's never really been clear if there's specific qualifying criteria so I'm not sure he is ruled out either.

    On balance I think I would find a programme about him just as interesting and maybe more so than someone such as Kieran Donaghy who has been interviewed countless times ahead of big matches and has also published a book.

    Anyone who is interested will already know his story inside out. That's not to say that he's not a worthy inclusion on the basis of his significance as a player. But in the case of David Brady maybe something new or different might emerge? Or it might be interesting to get the perspective of someone who has not won All-Ireland senior medals? Or the perspective of someone who has grown up in a different footballing tradition? Or the perspective of someone whose opinions are not conditioned by a particular background? There seems to have been five or six of these programmes featuring successful Kerry players from the same team who with the best will in the world, will have just different versions of the same story.

    If it's just "achievements" that qualifies people then at this stage they would just work their way through the Dublin panel.

    A great episode. Often the making of an episode of Laochra Gael is the players story off the intercounty pitch. Otherwise it can become a bit of "We played this game. This happened. Then we played this game. This happened. Then we played... etc."

    Iggy Clarke was injured in the semi-final win in 1980 so he missed the final against Limerick. Don't think he retired until a few years later.

    Brenda McAnespie could be the best story of the lot.

    She was a leader on the great Monaghan ladies team.
    She won an All Ireland medal alongside her 2 daughters, she currently has 5 Children playing senior inter county football for Monaghan - Ryan, Aoife, Ciara, Aisling & Eimear.

    She was a Sinn Féin councillor and is sister in law of Aidan McAnespie (RIP)

    One of her daughters had a personal tragedy as well, and has been an inspiration ever since, fundraising and getting back to playing county football.

    It’ll be well worth watching

    Donaghy's show was great last night.

    Didn't quite dawn on me but his goal scoring record in All-Ireland finals is right up there with the best ever. He scored four goals in the four finals he won (although it could be argued that a couple of them were lucky), with an eight year gap between his first AI final goal in 2006 and his last in 2014.

    I was comparing it to the great Kerry team of 70s/80s, and only Sheehy scored more goals in the All-Irelands that the Kingdom won (five, with a similar eight year gap between his first (78) and last (86)). Was surprised to see that the Bomber Liston 'only' goaled in one All-Ireland final in comparison.

    Something else caught my eye. No Dublin player has scored in multiple AI finals during this all-conquering era, and Brogan is the only player to score a goal more than once (2013 final).

    Back on topic, it was a good watch, although I am not sure whether Gizzy Lyng's next week will be as interesting.

    Just watched the Gizzy Lyng episode this morning, a very interesting fella with a very different story to tell. Thought George O'Connor's comments were excellent and told a lot, found it quite emotional tbh. Good contributions from Tommy Walsh and his brother Ciaran Lyng, thoroughly enjoyed it.
