Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. New offering from ALDI. You will find them in the freezer compartment. Four large rolls per box for €1.79 I think. Very nice imo and inexpensive.

The Mae's Kitchen ones? Yeah they are nice and good value. Kind of a herby taste. There's a new Mae's Kitchen range of 'No Beef' and 'No Chicken' burgers too but only saw them in one of the two Aldi's I visit and they sold and out and not replaced since. They were great so watch out for them!

Agree, they are quite nice although I did one in the airfyer the other day and it became a sausage pillow!

Havent seen the No Beef or No Chicken burgers, but might give them a go if I do as I love the quorn hot & spicy burgers

Yep, there the ones, Mae's Kitchen. I hope they are supported and not a trial-and- gone in a month item.

I've tried the beef ones, they are very similar to the No Bull burger Iceland do. It seems to be an issue with stock in a lot of stores, quite a few people I know are unable to get them

    Thanks, deaglan1. I gotta try these. 🍽

They're not bad (the Aldi sausage rolls that is) but they take a while in the oven.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,739 ✭✭✭Worztron

Are they akin to Linda McCartney's Sausage Rolls?

No they Linda ones are nicer IMO. The Aldi ones are a lot bigger and have a more herby taste. They are still very nice once you don't compare them to the Linda Mc ones. I wasn't gone on my first lot for that reason but went back and enjoy them now.

on a side note, man the no beef and no chicken burgers sell out like crazy! Demand certainly is increasing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 610 ✭✭✭JustMe,K

Apparently all of these are only seasonal and are being discontinued at the end of the month - I may stock up on the sausage rolls!

    seasonal veganism hmmmmm

  • Registered Users Posts: 684 ✭✭✭Jjjjjjjjbarry

I'd be confident they will make them permanent once they see the demand is there. Veganism isn't going away.
It's only a matter of time before Aldi have a vegan pizza surely?

Ah, if the demand is there then I think they will keep them on off course. That was the story with the vegan sausage rolls in Applegreen and now they are keeping them on and also since introduced their own vegan wraps!

I could be wrong....I hope I'm wrong! Haven't tried the burgers because....well I just don't like the sound of them, but I love the sausage rolls. Haven't been able to get them at my local the last few times I tried though :/

What happened to the rolls, this thread was getting intense and just stopped, leaving me in suspense..

They have vegan sausage rolls in centra temple bar and they are absolutely quality

  • Registered Users Posts: 684 ✭✭✭Jjjjjjjjbarry

The sausage rolls are going strong in Aldi anyway. Still waiting for them to stock a vegan pizza. Any day now....

I didn’t want to start a new thread for this...

Lidl are now selling plant based quarter pounders for €2.99.

I think they will be popular. They’re a fair bit cheaper than the ‘Beyond Meat’ quarter pounder and they’re Irish too (made by Rudd Foods in Offaly).

I really didn't like the Lidl burgers. I can imagine they will absolutely be a winner for a lot of people though!

Are they soy based or what’s in them?
Taste like beyond meat or what’s comparable?

They look like those ones in Dunne’s which I didn’t really like. Similar packaging from memory.

I cant remember tbh - I haven't tried the beyond meat ones. Havent tried anything I can compare it to....I realise my answer is fairly useless!!

They don't seem to have wheat/gluten either so probably fine for us coeliacs.

Thanks. I usually like pea protein stuff so will check them out!

Have recently ordered off the vegan menu from McGuinness takeaway on Camden street,
Its decent enough but will have to find other options locally

Yep, there's an aftertaste I don't like and I'm not fussy when it comes to veggie burgers etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 684 ✭✭✭Jjjjjjjjbarry

Just trying those Lidl burgers. They're not bad at all. Very meaty taste. Reminds of those new birds eye vegan sausages/meat balls, also made from pea protein but these Lidl ones are nicer with better texture.

Also picked up a vegan pizza while in there.

Are theses Lidl burgers in the frozen or chilled section in stores?!

There were loads in the local Aldi…very shortly afterwards, there were none. It's like the vegan sausage rolls offered in delis round the country: some places near me are saying they're "flying out the door". Damned meat eaters stealing our grub.

Can we stop calling them burgers and sausages if they don't contain meat? Isn't that an EU rule now anyway?

It's not and it shouldn't be, though some lunatic US (where else?) state legislatures are caving in to lunatic corporate pressure to outlaw the words outside dead animal flesh.

Where's the copyright? Where's the cuts of meat called 'burger' or 'sausage' that need to be identified?

They're names for convenient shapes to deliver whatever you're selling. Coconut milk anyone? The flesh, skin and eyes of a potato? Cream sherry? Beef tomatoes?

If you are following veganism for health reasons then this sort of ingredients list should highlight the fact that these substitute convenience foods are as bad as the originals.

Can make very tasty bean burgers quickly and easily without half this crap in them

As is the case with everything processed you buy in a shop. Not a vegan issue.

I'd love to make my own stuff with chickpeas etc but just don';t have time. Do you have any quick easy recipes?

Generally these are good for quick recipes

Alternatively slow cooker recipes can be solid for prep overnight. Generally batch cook Sweet Potato, Chickpea and Kale Curries in it and get enough for 3 days and takes about 15 min to prep in the evenings.

Quick and easy is relative, but so is time. Vegan or no it is important to make time for good food. When I was a meat eater I could't understand how anyone could eat the likes of those pre-prepped burgers, or even the likes of the Big Al's frozen beef burgers, and not make their own.

Any kind of a cooked bean will give you a consistency of mince meat to form "burger" patties. After that it's what you want them to taste of - whatever herbs you like, whatever seasoning you like, slow fry some diced onion and garlic and add that to the bean mix.
The good news is that they freeze really well so one evening will give you a fine batch of burgers for the freezer. -I find a common mistake is to make them too big and then they take bloody forever to defrost/cook . Make them nice and thin and double up if you like.

You can always breadcrumb them and shallow fry them for the crispy effect.

-Another thing is - at the end of the day your beef burger tastes of the trimmings - lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, ketchup. If you get some nice tofu, fry a couple of slices of it and put that between the burger buns where the meat would be and it's bloody delicious, and quick and simple!

Edit - a portobello mushroom also makes a fantastic "meaty" burger! :)

    tinned beans are your friend

kidney beans, chopped oniion, breadcrumbs, coriander salt pepper throw in some yeast flakes into a food processor whizz until a workable consistency add liquid (slowly not too much) make into patties coat in panko breadcrumbs - shallow fry

actually havent made those for ages ! replace beans with any ones you like.

It's this one, class! It's in the "Giving small producers a big chance" section, so maybe not in all supervalu's. Found it on talbot street in dublin.
