Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

And Martial has missed most of the season so we'd probably be better off.

Don't Leverkusen have this thing where they don't sell to Bayern too?

    They sold them Michael Ballack

Do you think a team like:

    DDG
    AWB-Varane-Maguire-Chilwell
    ---Reus
    McTominay
    Fernandes
    James--Memphis--Rashford

    Would win the Champions League?

I dont understand the desire to take back Depay or the fascination some have with Fernandes as neither are proven at a higher level then their current clubs. Sounds mean but if they were good enough to be on teams that want to win the champions league they would either be on a bigger team or joining one (they are both coming to the peak of their careers).

I would prefer somebody like Ruben Neves for central midfield. Although I accept he may not necessarily bring the creativity the other two would but hes quality, only 22 and already a proven quality CM in the EPL. Him alongside McTominey would be a savage midfield and if you were playing 3-5-2 (full backs in mid) or 4-2-3-1 that would be top notch.

I think any one of those 8 walks into this team, it really highlights how far United has fallen.

Won’t be seeing the likes of that for awhile...

Interestingly Park and Butt both started over 30 games those seasons. Every top squad needs one of those unappreciated kind of players that put in a solid shift when they are brought on.

What do people think of this Pep talk Keane gave to the squad?

In light of the results it looks like it certainly didn’t do any harm. If we had lost , no doubt this would of been perceived to of been a bad decision! Wonder which player was the one who supposedly looked disinterested. I presume Pogba was still off playing basketball in USA so it prob wasn’t him.

I really hope they can keep momentum going tonight and more importantly at the weekend. Any chance they go on a winning run at least until the arsenal game at New Years?! Would be some turnaround to be there or thereabouts to 4th just passing the halfway stage.

The player I had in mind while reading that article was Martial. I can just imagine him sitting there, drifting off, not giving a flying a ****.

He's an obvious candidate for me anyway!

I'll never understand the buyout clause's, Liverpool apparently taking a player off Salzburg for 7 million (his buyout) we go for him and probably be told no or have to pay double

Well, yes, you don't understand then :p

If his buyout is 7m, then it doesn't matter if it's Pool or us. Once the buying club offer the 7m, it is then entirely up to the player which club he joins. The club can't say no, or pay double.

If there was no buyout, then chances are we'd be given higher prices, but of course we would; we have a track record of being desperate and willing to pay over the odds for players. It's hard to do when we actually are desperate, but until we take a harder stance, that will continue.

The reality is there are probably dozens of players round Europe with low release clauses (relatively) that would improve us, but by and large, the club rarely seems interested in strenghtening like that. The summer just gone shows it can be done (James continues to look like an absolute steal), but it would require a level of trust be put into the scouting team, and a willingness from the board to go for less flashy names who fit the systems better.

Pool have done stellar business over the last two years; Salah, Mane, Fabinho and Firminho all bought for round €40m, while we've been spending €50m on the likes of Fred. I like Maguire, but I've no doubt we could have gotten a player of a similar level for a decent chunk less if we'd gone looking in Germany. (I absolutely get the arguement they wanted a "PL Proven" player, mind).

    You're not wrong, there.

I think a lot of papers use our name to bring more eyes on stories. I think a lot of agents leak we're interested so as to get the price of their client out there too.

Ben Yeddar as an example. Linked to us over the summer, €40m buy out clause, and would have improved us. Never happened, went to Monacco instead :/ Maybe he just turned us down, mind, but he's an example of a player who'd have probably been getable if we tried.

Apparently Liverpool moving in January instead of waiting until the summer was because of United's interest (along with some Bundesliga clubs)

I'd imagine the clause would have been the same for everyone it just came down to when move is made. Being in the same CL group likely helped Liverpool here.

Presume we're getting another u21 side tonight.

Win or draw, and we come top of the group and avoid any of the CL rejects.

AZ have also locked in their progression. Win and they come top, draw or loss and they come second.

AZ play Ajax this weekend, and that's 1st place vs 2nd, so might be inclined to not bother too much either tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,300 ✭✭✭✭Father Hernandez

Hopefully Rashford, Martial and James rested tonight, Greenwood to start.

Could do with seeing United set up well defensively with senior players though, a game United need not to lose to stay top and get a somewhat easier draw.

Still 5/1 favourite with the bookies to win the EL even with the additional Champions League third place teams.

    Top 4 looks possible again.

I think the league is a better place to focus than a cup. It would be a bad idea to risk players or give them less rest before the next league game after two difficult league games when the return is a possible better draw in a cup.

In fairness they messed up after the last rest they got too. They really should be well in the top 4 already. Too many silly points dropped.

They also looked great the last two games, no point risking senior players tonight, play the reserves.

On the one hand it's good to get legendary players in to give them a talk and tell them what's what.

On the other hand, what about the next time there's a dip. How many times will Ole have to pick up the phone to get someone in to get the players a talking to.

It could eventually be seen as him undermining himself, and he doesn't have the confidence or presence to actually manage/lead the squad.

Could be a masterstroke, be the nice guy, let someone else come in and be the angry one every so often. The players don't seem that thick skinned.

We've been through this with this team before. Play well in a big game then be utter **** through the next 7/8 run of the mill fixtures. It only looks possible, that's all, if it looked probable I'd be inclined to agree with you but we could just as easily pick up feck all points over xmas and be regretting not pushing to finish top of the group.

The mistake was fannying about in the other group games. Not being in a position to rest players now before a hectic xmas schedule is the consequence of that.

We've been píss poor generally this season bar the last 2 games and a handful of others so I'm not sure about focusing on the league just yet.

Be better placed to play a good mix of youth and seniority tonight, whatever is best to make sure the job is done by finishing top.

See how Christmas pans out results wise and play it by ear in February. We play better in bigger games as seen this season so you'd imagine EL KO football won't be any different but who knows.

He absolutely would and that money in top flight football is nothing for quality players.

Sadly, I'd say he is Liverpool bound due to an inept board at United.
