Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Is it bright blue?

At first I thought fireworks in the clouds but looked a lot like lightning.

If a transformer blew out or something that could explain the blue flash

It is. Thought it was lightning myself at first but on high ground you can actually see it roaming around.

I'd say the powercut in Newcastle might be the more likely explanation though! Unlikely coincidence.

EDIT: looks serious, 1500+ customers out.

There's a spotlight moving around the sky at the moment for the last week, can't really tell where it is coming from but it's fairly bright and moves quickly. Might be that?

I can see it from both the M7 and the M4.

It's going on a lot more than a week, it's annoying as f1ck, drives me nuts coming up the M7. It was really bright tonight.

Did not hear any thunder myself - but I was driving home on the N11 just before the wicklow town exit when there where three very bright white flashes spaced about 1 minute apart. It was like a camera flash suddenly going off - very bright but diffuse and seeming to fill the whole sky with light. Would have been about 17:45.

Some strikes recently picked up over the Wicklow Mountains, in the vicinity of Kippure. I wonder if the mast was hit???

The lightning map isn't pinpoint accurate and those two closest strikes are only about 100m and 200m away from the mast, they almost certainly hit it.

Was going to post the same.. that's a circa 120m mast on top of a 750m mountain so I'd be almost certain those strikes were on the mast rather than nearby.

Open Street Maps are amazing in many ways, but every peak in the Dublin/Wicklow mountains are shown as about 50m higher than they actually are. Not sure why this is, but probably due to low resolution heightmap data of the area.

Small chance of a bit of sporadic lightning today , more so perhaps in Atlantic coastal counties. Cold air aloft over the relatively warm seas might get enough convection going becoming briefly electrified.

Hail shower just went through here near Tralee.

Lightning for the last couple of hours off the NW, wonder will some come close to or over land.

Met Eireann mentioning it ' Rain will clear eastwards to scattered showers tonight with the risk of hail and sleet on northern hills. Some of the showers will be heavy and blustery across the west and northwest later, with the ongoing risk of hail and lightning

Heard that as well, some big blustery showers about today, some of hail.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,066 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Risk of hail and thunder tomorrow more so in the SW I think but most of the lightning if it occurs could happen over water or near the coasts. Some convection might get a lift off the mountains in Kerry giving some lightning. Will see.

Cold mid level and upper level air temperatures should provide half decent lapse rates, perhaps a very mixed profile but should encourage good convection and produce hail and wintry precipitation. Mountain tops should see a bit of a whitening.

If this is correct it was some serious strike.

Sneem is without power at the moment. There were 3 or 4 strikes, very intense and very powerful, power went within a second of the first strike.

Must have been some strike, 2 more faults on the map now.

Edit : 8 ESB faults now from the strike, over 15 km apart.

Very well defined squall line has developed recently, currently stretching from Belfast in the North East to Kerry in the South West. M.T. did mention the possibility of one developing in a recent forecast.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭Longing

The squall line is from Kerry to Aberdeen in Scotland now.
