My ultimate hangover cure. What's yours?

It's probably been asked before on Boards.ie in various forms, but I want to add my own take on the dreaded hangover and how I developed a method to dramatically lessen the harmful effects of the grog.

Disclaimer: This is /my/ method and won't necessarily work for everyone, but you are free to try it out and see if it works. And this method doesn't entirely get rid of a hangover, it just lessens the effects.

1.) Soakage. It's an obvious one, but often overlooked. The trick is to get all three macros into your stomach so your body has everything it needs to survive the drinking session. My go-to method for years has always been a dirty kebab with generous amounts of dressing and plenty of lettuce. It has all three macros: Fat, Carbs, and Protein, and some micronutrients from the lettuce. It's not necessarily healthy just because it has three macros, but you could say it is tailor-made for a heavy night out drinking beer, and for me it works.

2.) Electrolytes, lost salts, & micronutrients. I'm not sure how well known this is, but alcohol strips your body of essential salts, micronutrients and electrolytes, leaving you feel horribly deprived and malnourished the following day. It is paramount to have all this ready to get back into your body as soon as you feel malnourished and deprived of nutrients. My favorite go-to to get these back is fresh spinach leaves, cacao powder, & tinned anchovies. The spinach restores micronutrients, the cacao is loaded with magnesium (and a mild stimulant called theobromine), something your body will be craving the following day, and the anchovies are packed with salt which again is stripped from your body by the grog.

3.) Headaches can be alleviated with Nurofen Plus. (I have no affiliation), I just love having this on hand because it has something that hasn't been banned in Ireland yet: Codeine. It's a terribly powerful pain-killer. Just do your homework on this as-well as ibuprofen as the two can have negative side-effects like constipation etc. One tablet is enough to banish my headaches. I know others who need two.

4.) Sugar. The science is there. Alcohol reduces your blood sugar and you will feel tired and drained after a session. So make sure your fridge is packed with six to eight of various cold cans of tonics like Red Bull, 7up, sparkling water, etc. You will need these throughout the day hence the large amount, and you will be thankful you don't have to make a half-drunken trip to the shop just to buy a can of sugar water.

And that's it! What is /your/ method for reducing the effects of a hangover? I'd love to know!

Drinking hot water. It just goes straight in and flushes out the body very well. I usually drink one or two pints and am fine the next morning.

About 1/3 fresh boiled water 2/3 cold ;)

Solpadeine, Dioralyte, Berocca in a pint glass of water. Repeat if necessary.

Sounds great OP but from my own experience and talking to others hangovers seem to be a lot worse to deal with the older we get.

20 years ago I could leave a nightclub at 4am and while I might not have been feeling the best i could still do a days work but now not a hope.

A fry, packet of chipsticks and an orange calippo. Big mug of tea too.

    Big +1 to that.

Exact same, was leaving a place at 4am on a Thursday and would get into work about 10:00, feeling terrible, but still able to soldier on and get through it.

These days there is no way I would do it, did something half similar a couple of years ago and was one of the worst horrors I've ever had.

OP, best tip I can give is drink a pint of water before bed, and have a bottle of something along the lines of Gatorade during the night, sip away on it when you wake up from time to time, etc.

That's sort of a prevention rather than a cure.

A blowjob followed by a shower finishing on cold and a coffee usually does the trick. One can get by minus the blowie but it does help the mood.

The above is grand for yer standard mild, "I had a few to many" hangover. However if you are in the depts of hell, yer hair hurts and monsters you thought long buried are looking for their pound of flesh yer fecked.

Would it not be better have the **** before the shower?

Doesn’t matter, dude. That’s what a sock is for.

    Not at all.

When you cum and the happy hormones are out the last thing you want to do is deal with the hassle of washing and drying yourself

Never “warmed” to the idea of using the sock. Equate the “sensation” to that of licking a 9v battery.

Gave the gargle up in January as new years resolution and haven't gone back since. The hangovers i used to get after anything more than 6 cans/pints would leave me in a heap for two days.

Only thing that made me feel slightly better was plenty of water, two pain killers and sleep.

    Not worth the hassle TBH.

Little tip for you drunks ;) if your p!ss is not clear, ie green, dark green or whatever fcuking other colour, lob two pints of water into you as it is a clear sign of dehydration. And keep drinking it until itis

    my tactics:

    1. before starting to drink have lucozade sport to stock up on electrolytes/salts.

    2. stay off spirits. I just go for a low-ish alcohol beer. Makes a huge difference.

    3. drink a couple of glasses of water throughout the night after every few drinks.

    4. Don't go to sleep while at your most pissed. Have more lucozade and sober up as much as possible before hitting the scratcher.

Whenever I do this, I don't get a headache or nausea the next day. The only element of the hangover that remains is the tiredness which can be dealt with by a power nap during the day.

You're all wrong, more pints and a feed is the only cure. Back into the pub about noon the next day, struggle over the first pint for an hour or so. Another 5 or so to sort you out over the course of the day. If the pub serves pizza even better.

    It works

Coconut water in chicken broth heated and get it down ya

It tastes dreadful but it works EVERY time... years living and drinking away too much in Aus.
I cant remember who told me but it is bulletproof

The only hangover cure that actually works is having the “cure” i.e. drinking more. It absolutely 100% works, after one can/pint 90% of the hangover is suppressed and a few more will finish the job.

If in the pub in the morning, pints of good Guinness is a good cure but if at home you can’t beat ice cold orchard thieves, it has everything you need - alcohol, sugar and kills the thirst!

I find plain old water help better than anything else. If I drink 2l of water when I get home from a night out I'll wake up feeling fine, no headache. If I forget to though it'll be a pretty gnarly day ahead of me. Really tough force feeding yourself that much water at 4am but SO worth it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,043 ✭✭✭bilbot79

So learned yet you forget about the choline in milk and eggs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,538 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Sudafed, full-sugar Irn Bru and something salty - various fried pork products work well, but in a push Walkers crisps have normally unpalatable salt levels. Clears the head and rebuilds electrolyte levels.

Doesn't work as well in my thirties as it did fifteen years ago; but back then I could get back to totally fine on a breakfast roll and two Benson. Its possible the B&H are the missing element but I'd prefer not to start smoking again to find out.

If you don't actually need to go out again, drop the meds and swap for the Homes Under The Hammer drinking game.

When you are really in Skagsville have a small glass of wine or sip on a spirit for the day. Just small amounts. The skag is alcohol leaving your system, you just need to limit it

Nothing except time works really. Food or lucozade may offer temporary relief but there isn't really a cure. Well actually valium or xanax make your pain go away but that's a slippery slope.

I’m not reading all four pages but the answer is more drink. I assume someone has said it by now though.

Haven't done a roll over since my J1.

You can’t beat the roll over, I’ve missed many planned weekend sessions because of covid some that would have been 3 day roll overs.

As for the cure, doesn’t even have to mean a roll over, I’d always have a few cold cans in the fridge Incase they would be needed to kill a hangover or I’d have a few “emergency cans” as I call them in the boot of the car going to a wedding or whatever in case they were needed the morning after.
