Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Took Introduction to Pure Mathematics last year and found it very very good but encountered a lot of challanges in time management and getting back into structured studying (and learning to read maths again).

This year taking Mathematical Methods, Models and Modelling (same as DapperGent).
    Complex Analysis.
    Modelling Computer Processes.

    Hey Tinky,
do you know a guy called Liam Colgan - I think he's doing the same course?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,616 ✭✭✭milltown

MT262 "Putting computer systems to work" with the OU this year. Did two 30 pointers last year and vowed never again to put myself under that sort of pressure. I would imagine a single 60 point course would be much easier to manage.

Best of luck to all in yisser studies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,163 ✭✭✭ZENER

I've had 2 tutorials so far and have all the names and emails of everyone that attended but I dont see a Liam Colgan on the list.

Doesn't mean there isn't one as many students dont bother with the face to face tutorials at all.

What year is he in BigCon? I have a friend in 2nd year who may know him.

I've done T173 and I was doing T209 last year got about half way through it and ended up seriously ill in hospital:( by the time I was well enough I was over 2 modules behind which is a pity as it is an excellent course. I am going to pick it up again next year undecided what course yet I might redo T209 and another course at the same time since I completed T209 anyway in my own time I might as well get the points for it.

Well I've just signed away the next year/if not 4 years of my life to Nui Galway. I'm studying for a certificate in training and education which is a year long course. Hoping to carry on if successful to the Diploma (year 2) and then B.A. Degree (year 3 & 4). Good news is there are no exams :D but there are continuous assessments and a final year project. It's very applicable to my work though so hopefully I'll be ok.

Im doing an MSc in Financial Economics with the University fo London

They dont have as wide a range as the OU, but do have a better selection of finance / business related masters. They are tad cheaper than the OU and have been offering distance learning for many years.

    http://www.cefims.ac.uk/

All in all i would say im very pleased with them

Bit weird but I actually sat the course last year - things went a bit t*ts up at the end of the year so I'm repeating the entire course.

It's a brilliant course, I really enjoyed it... especially the literature and gender section. On the plus side I'm saved from re-reading the novels... last year it was a nightmare!

I decided to do A103 & A210 at the same time... and everything was fine until it came to the end of the year. I decided I'd focus on A103 rather than have wasted a year. Now I can't wait for next year - it means I'll be able to really get into the course... I hated having to divide my time last year.

Now all I need to do is find out how to raise the funds for the damn course :( , the bank called me on Saturday morning to tell me I was pre-approved for a ten billion euro loan, I'd just have to repay €100 per week... and did I also know I was pre-approved for an overdraft?

Funnily enough at the end of October I did find that out...

    Uh! It's not fair!!!

I'm doing a BA in Humanities through Oscail. Just finished my third and fourth module.

I initially started it to do History but I've only done one His module so far - next year I'm doing Philosophy 3 and Sociology 2.

For anyone who looked at learning with Oscail before and didn't like the year they had (March to Nov) they're in the process of moving to the standard academic year.

Will be starting a grad dip in environmental protection with SligoIT at the end of the month?

Any secrets as to how to motivate yourself for distance learning. Beginning to think 'was is the best option'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,002 ✭✭✭MargeS

LFC I tend to make coffee every chance I get. I think (in my head) it justifies getting up away from the desk. I thought it would be easier now that I'm older but I feel exactly the way I did when I was in college. Guilty for not studying and relieved when I do a bit. It's really hard to get down to it after a days work.

I know this isn't a very motivational post, but I know how your feeling.

Ok so I've been looking at the New Horizons learning centre, and I was wondering has anyone completed a computer related course with them? I was looking at doing the design and media library online course, I think it looks brilliant.

But has anyone had hands on experience with them? Would love to hear some input!

If you are thinking about doing the design and media course one of the Account Managers in New Horizons should have emailed you out a demo of what you are looking to buy so you can experience what it is like first hand.

I'm planning to do "T206 Energy for a Sustainable Future" with the OU in Feb 2008, anybody here done something similar?

Bit worried about trying to fit that in around a full time job ... any tips?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

One 60 point course should be manageable enough - of course, it all depends on how you find the material. If it's a subject you have some experience in or knowledge of, it'll mean less work then someone approaching it totally new.

My top tip - try to keep to the study calender you get. Getting behind (obviously) makes it harder to keep up. And don't be afraid to use FirstClass (the OU's forum/online conferencing application) when you get access to it. The forums there can be pretty useful!

90% distance ed with 10% tutorials and labs.

    http://aua.learnonline.ie/login/index.php

In conjunction with my work in medical device industry.

Fees are a wee bit on the steep side as its €350 per subject and doing 10 this year!!!
anyway that there could be a tax break invloved for fees and/or books also???
    thanks
    john

AFAIK you can claim from revenue for tuition fees. Have a look here
    http://www.revenue.ie/
Not too sure how the rules would apply to you, but it's worth applying anyway.

Just started my BSc in IT through Oscail.

I have been doing this course for a few years now and am hoping to get my diploma this year.

I am considering leaving Oscail though, the quality of some of the notes are very poor (I have to say the tutors are generally brilliant though)

Can anyone recommend another college which provides BSc in IT through distance education?

The one that springs to mind (especially if you're in the UK) is the OU. You'll probably be able to get credit for the diploma too, which means less courses to be done to get your BSc

UEL also offer a distance learning computing degree http://www.uel.ac.uk/dl/programmes/module_info/bsc_computing.htm

The Royal Statistical Society (www.rss.org.uk) run a professional exams program...

Ordinary cert - 2 papers .....loads of definitions and that, fairly handy

    Higher Cert - 3 papers / 6 modules.....undergrad stuff...doable, without being overly easy

Graduate Diploma - 4 full papers and 2 half papers......This is Post grad level stuff...

there is a DL program organized by the university of Southampton.

Am Currently doing BSc in IT Management at Tallaght IT - Year 2 outta 3

Tried doing the one at Oscail, but found it ridicilous.

KONE: The course I am doing is called FLITE, flexible learning, its all online (notes & Stuff) and the also run classes every week

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

I took the Diploma in IT with Oscail and wasn't too impressed either. I transferred to the Open University and they gave me full credit for my Oscail study and I finished off my BSc. I'm now working on my Masters in Technology and I can't recommend them highly enough. The materials are top-notch, the tutors are great and the online support and forum is excellent too. And no...they're not paying me to say this! :D

The only downside is the fees. It's a bit more expensive especially with the currency exchange rate but I think it's worth it.

    Hi,

Actually I’m in the exact same position – I have finished the Oscail Diploma in Information Technology from Dublin City University and have also been a little disappointed with the quality of the notes and that the stuff in the course seems to be a bit dated. I was wondering if you could advise about how to transfer from Oscail to the OU to finish the Degree.

I was looking at the OU credit transfer site and the credit transfer form. In particular I need to know :
    1. Did you transfer to an Open degree or a specific degree course ?
    2. How many points did the OU think that the Oscail diploma was worth?
    3. Also how did you go about getting the required documentation from DCU Oscail?
    4. Did they make it easy or difficult for you when you decided to transfer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.:-)[
