Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I am currently watching Kill La Kill and Coppelion. Kill La Kill is just wow and cleverly written. I love how random it is. I only watched two episodes of Coppelion and reminds me of Gunslinger Girl and comes across as deep. Reminds me I need to go back and watch more episodes but I too prefer when they are all realised as cliff hangers can be a pain...

I am totally up for beers, coffee what not! :D

The new kill la kill episode is incredible.

I thought it was just a sill fan service show at first, but now I'm starting to think that everything has a purpose.

    And the artwork. Wow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,067 ✭✭✭Gunmonkey

Its definitely growing on me, was a bit "Whats all the buzz about?" for the first 2 episodes but its really coming together, I like how Ryuko does'nt win every fight by going "I CAN ROAR LOUDER THAN YOU SUPER-POWER-MEGA-ABILITY RRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHHHHHH......." like most other action series.

Plus the scenes where her friend does the interpretive dances to explain whats going on are brilliant :D

Have you guys seen the trailer for Princess Kaguya, the new Studio Ghibli feature? The artwork is awesome! It has such an old skool look and feel to it and the story is bound to be top notch as always.

Anyhoo...here it is for those who have not seen it yet:

Saw it yesterday, it looks great. Great to see another Isao Takahata film too, I think the last one I saw of his was My Neighbors The Yamada's. This has a very similar art style.

I see police came to an Asian cosplay convention after someone came in a very revealing Kill la Kill cosplay. :/

    EDIT: It was over this

That girl's Kill La Kill's cosplay is amazing! This is the kinda costume you got to be careful doing in public as it could come across as tacky/cheap but this girl really nailed it and her costume looks spot on! The costume looks like she put alot of work into it too. I guess this costume is more suited for shooting material but fair chunks to her wearing it in public.

    I thought this was interesting.

I'd say 12 onwards if you want them to fully understand the storyline.

Hmmm, is it true that people who watch anime, less so with reading manga, are looked down on in Japan?

Depends! Otaku are sometimes looked down on but I find you generally have to be quite extreme to be considered an otaku. So like, guys who have rooms adorned with posters, bedsheets, figures etc. etc. of anime girls would be considered a bit unfavourable.

But there's tons and tons of casual anime viewers here and they're definitely not looked down on (in my experience anyway!). Like, people wouldn't be afraid to say they watch anime or anything like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭GalwayGuy2

Oh well that's better than I thought. I was reading about the Otaku murders, etc, and I thought there was more stigma.

It seems fairly like our own tbh. There always articles about why people read YA and so on so forth.

    So, I'll be a quite Otaku :P

The word otaku only has a bad connotation in Japan from when they arrested a pedophile that among his several videos of child porn he also had lots of anime among it. Since then, being considered an otaku is the same as being a pedophile even though that, outside Japan, the same word is used to describe people who enjoys the japanese culture: anime, manga and anything Japan related.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭GalwayGuy2

Hmmm, that's interesting and rathr disturbing. So, it's about being considered an 'Otaku' rather than watching anime?

In other news, I found out Kill La Kill has a Pulp Fiction cameo.

That's really not true at all. In fact, there was a serial killer who was Otaku, but that was over 25 years ago now, and has very little bearning on what the term Otaku means now. To say that Otaku is 'the same as being a pedophile' is just not true.

Maybe i exaggerated a bit but the info i gave was given from friends living in Japan.
It is true that he was a serial killer but he also sexually molested his victims. The fact that japanese society still see Otaku as a black stain is partly due to "The Otaku Murderer".

    Tsutomu Miyazaki

So otaku is a derogatory term in Japan that refers to anyone with an unhealthy, unnatural obsession to something including but, not limited, to anime, manga and video games.

Sure, it's often used as an insult in the same way that some people in English speaking countries would use nerd/geek to describe folks who are into games, comics, or have other generally nerdy interest, and consider them basement-dwelling no-lifers. But similarly, there's folks who embrace the term, a look around Akihabara in Tokyo or on Osaka's famed otaroad (or, 'otaku road') would give you an idea of this.

Yes. I'm not saying that everyone thinks the same way towards the term otaku. One of the reasons japanese don't laugh at cosplayers is because majority of them like to cosplay.
Even though they are trying to ease the negative stereotype that has befallen on the word otaku that might take a while since the media still links the "otaku murderer" to the word otaku.

A majority of Japanese people like to cosplay, huh? Cosplaying can be a pretty intense hobby, so I really doubt that a mority would cosplay, it sounds like quite a generalization. You don't mind if I ask you for a source on that, do you?

    Let me rephrase it:
The Japanese youth likes to cosplay.

    Thanks for the link, Butterscotch.

That shows clearly that Japan has a market for cosplay in Tokyo, the famous Akihabara, Otome Road in Ikebukuro and lets not forget Harajuku.

Unfortunately, cosplay is a taboo hobby that isn't openly accepted by the Japanese society.

You are welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!

It is a very informative documentary. It is the same with here too to a certain extent and most places. We are still living in the dark ages some what having a long way to go but there is hope in the future as times are changing gradually.

I was reading somewhere online quite a few months ago that most Japanese people cosplaying at a con in Japan will get themselves into costume and character at the con itself, rather than walk around/taxi themselves to a con in character as it is viewed as shameful or disrespectful. Apparently the people you would see walking to a con already in cosplay are Westerners, is that true?

I don't have a link unfortunately, it was too far back to remember.

Well, certainly at Comiket this year, most of the cosplayers seemed to be carting around suitcases so I'm assuming they were getting changed at the venue. However, I would've just assumed it was more for practicality's sake - most people would have had to travel a fair distance on trains etc. to get to the venue and navigating that in cosplay (especially since most of the ones I saw were quite extravagant!) wouldn't be the easiest of tasks. Plus, there's the chance of your cosplay getting dirtied/damaged etc. Could well be true about the shameful side of things aswell but I genuinely think practicality plays a huge part in changing into your cosplay the the venue rather than at home!

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,135 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

When I was over there I talked to a few and they said they would have no problem wearing cosplay around. As Konata said above, it's just more convenient.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,730 ✭✭✭✭entropi

It does seem far more practical to do it that way, since not everybody will stay more than the one day as per usual with a con and they can just pack up, wheel their stuff away and catch a train home during the night. Were there dressing rooms separate from the regular toilets for cosplayers there, Konata? Also, was it a good con?
