Advice on setting up utilities on a new home?

    My wife and I are moving soon to our new build house, we haven't had any utility bills accounts before on our name, we were house sharing.

    I want to budget our monthly expenses and would like to know the average cost of the following:

    *Bins (Monthly) & which company?

    *Electricity & Gas (Monthly) Which Company?

    *Home Alarm Security Company (Monthly)?

    *Broadband (Still considering or for the meantime mobile Hot-Spot)?

    Any advice?

    Shop around. https://www.bonkers.ie/ may be useful, but compare that to any prices or offers on the suppliers own website. Note that where you live will affect prices, e.g. electricity is more expensive in rural areas.

    **Make sure you have an Eircodes .** You can check here https://finder.eircode.ie/#/ It can take months for new Eircodes to filter through to all the operators.

    Bins - how much waste do you create? Are you conscientious enough to sort your waste properly. Do you have a composter?

    Electricity & Gas - you might get a deal by combining the two in one bill. However, the might be operators where separate is cheaper.

    Home Alarm Security Company - is if there is an operator where you can combine this with your phone, to see if it is cheaper. Note that many of the alarm monitoring companies charge a maintenance charge **and** an activation charge.

    Broadband - you may be able to get broadband / landline / TV deals.

    Differ net energy firms are cheaper for different usage patterns. If you give an idea of the size of house and mode of heating (I assume gas; but is there solar hot water for instance) someone might be able to give you a rough usage level for their similar house and you could use the comparison sites. Many bill bi-monthly not monthly, as it happens. Be prepared to change annually!

    Bins firms are different everywhere, even with counties you get different providors and also can get different rates from the same provider in different areas.

    Broadband - whoever the hell you can get at first; it is often nigh on impossible to get any in due to no eircode; imcompleted wiring etc. If you can't get wired broadband (and hence get Virgin, Vodafone or Eir TV) your TV options are Sky or freesat+saorview.

    Cant really advise you on Bins, as not every bin company covers every area - you'd need to look up whats available in your area.

    We moved in recently to a house in south dublin and went with Greyhound. €16.50 per month for their lowest package as we're a 2 person household (+1 cat who actually generates a fair amount of waste!)

    My advice is to ask if you go with the lowest package, can you uplift to a higher package during the term if you find you're going over. We can with Greyhound, but to date we've not breached our 30kg limit on the black bin, so looks like we'll stay as we are.

    We also got an alarm with monitoring (so monthly charge) and went with Network Security.
