Tolls - changes for COVID-19

Starting tomorrow (March 18th) the tolls at port tunnel and Tom Clarke bridge will take coins at the automatic booths only - no change given. No notes or credit cards will be accepted. Tags obviously accepted as normal.

Price for port tunnel is now €3 at all times during COVID-19

Does that mean no cashiers at all ? I had thought they had gone to contactless on the toll payments

shouldn't you just be able to tap your credit/debit card?

Of course you should and in 2020 it is a disgrace that they are encouraging people to use coins in a pandemic.

It seems these toll operators are a law unto themselves.

coins can be decomtaminated easily.

as long as they are not handled ... they are grand.

that's not really the point, who has coins these days? You'd have to go to a shop to get change. Why can't you tap - that's the safest option.

These are the two state-owned tolls that still have booths; so the operator is the state.

Still though you have to handle them to throw them in chute.

Now of course you could disinfect them and use gloves etc, but it is still not as straightforward as contactless.

That's an additional cost for them to install/manage/maintain.

If you install a tag, you have to pay them each month for it

yeah but you re handling your own coins, not transferring them. so no practical danger there.

as the covid virus lives for a certain time on surfaces the collection of the coins could be by waiting out the life of virus, or cleaning them before handling. currently there is no good reason not to accept coins into a toll booth for covid reasons. they can be collected safely with the right protocols.

It is not as original op said irresponsible,

And for sure this is more expensive for the operator than contactless, but not everyone has contactless cards. its not mandatory, so they do have to accept legal tender. they just dont have to offer change.

there are social reasons for changing the law so retailers dont have to accept legal tender but that for the future.

The one on the M8 in Cork does dot even accept credit card...

Im told the tags are still beeping on the eastlink though, so if your using it, take your tag off and put it in your glovebox.
