Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Marmite and Danish Blue cheese

    I go home for lunch from work every day as I live very close to my job. Almost every day I have 4 slices of wholemeal toast with butter and Marmite. Today for a change, I had bread (untoasted) with Marmite and hash browns, which was OK but not as good as plain Marmite.

    Even the thought of Marmite on toast makes my mouth water (it's watering even as I type this). Danish Blue cheese is the only other foodstuff that has this effect on me - but I would NEVER mix the two of them.

    My son and my girlfriend are violently sick at the very thought of eating Marmite, despite my attempts to convince them of its almost perfect taste and texture.

    So, I'm just wondering what are people's thoughts on Marmite (or Danish Blue cheese), and what foods make your mouth water or make you reach for the sick bucket?

    I like both, but was worried op mixed marmite and blue cheese together.

    Although both Marmite and Danish Blue are all very nice and good in their way, to mix either (or BOTH) of them with Guinness would be an instant emetic.
    That vile, bitter brown "drink" that tastes like rusty, muddy seawater.

    wholemeal toast with thick butter and heaped with home made blackberry jam...

    re marmite... Love it but folk make the mistake of spreading it like butter or jam... It needs a bare., mere barely visible smear. The taste is so strong and salty that a little goes a very long way....

    hey do they still make twiglets?

    I agree with Grace, a smear of Marmitel on hot buttered toast is spot on and Grace I had forgotten about Twiglets and yes they are still made by Jacobs

    I can't stomach either but they both seem to be among those foods that people either love or hate, with no middle ground. I've spent time all over the world and have tried many unusual foodstuffs but Marmite & Danish Blue are among those I'd choose to avoid. Lutefisk and Kimchi are acquired tastes but I'd choose them over marmite.

    Funnily enough I don't like marmite all that much but I adore twiglets - to the point of near addiction. :D Shame you can't get them here - only in the UK. I've been known to drive all the way from Dublin to Newry just to stock up on those crunchy snacks...

    Danish blue? Nah - too strong. Gorgonzola is the strongest cheese I can stomach and I love cheese.

    I smother the bread with it, but it has to be in equal proportion to the butter. A large jar lasts me about a week.

    Incidentally, I hate the hot drink that can be made out of Marmite.

    If you spread peanut butter on some type of flatbread and heat it in the microwave for about 20 seconds, take it out and add sliced apple - absolutely delicious.....

    I haven't had marmite in ages...adding it to the shopping list at the weekend so!


    I also love blue cheese. That with chutney or chilli jam on a cracker and I'm sorted.

    You are almost there! Really fresh soft white bread, a thin layer of real butter, overly generous dollops of marmite (unevenly spread so as to vary its strength with each bite) topped of with a blanket of slivers of Cashel Blue mashed in.... It is strong, it's really powerful, but don't knock it until you try it! I cannot wait for lunch now...

    I've never tried either so I don't know tbh.

    Look at this ad for prune juice. The actors dont look genuinely happy and only one of them actually drinks the stuff, looking like she had gear herself up for the task. I'm not buying it :)

    I adore blue cheese - Danish Blue as well as Stilton, Cashel, Lanark, Gorgonzola, Cambozola and Roquefort. I am aware that this makes me a little odd. Woman, who will eat just about anything including several sorts of food, doesn't like blue cheeses.

    Don't ever attempt to toast a blue cheese though, especially Roquefort - the last time I did that the resulting radiation would have levelled a gay Russian cathedral enthusiast. :cool:

    I've never grilled blue cheese, but I have microwaved blue cheese sandwiches. Lovely taste, but my God, the kitchen stinks for about three weeks afterwards :eek:

    I'd neglected Marmite for years until Tescos announced that they'd stop stocking it after a row with the supplier. Then I got some.

    Put Marmite on toast and put scrambled eggs on top. Beautiful.

    I've never tasted either, and I never will. I don't eat any sort of cheese, and Marmite doesn't appeal to me at all.


    I remember comedian Dave Gorman, on his programme Modern Life is Good-ish, saying that when he was being interviewed by somebody from a magazine when he was asked the question "Do you think you are a Marmite sort of person?".

    He replied by saying "Are you asking if people either like me or hate me?". She clarified with "No, I'm just wondering if you like Marmite or not.". This reply frustrated him.

    Vegemite in Australia? I grew up in Lancashire and we neve r had marmite. Must have adopted it as an adult, maybe at university? Hmm,, will think about that..

    I grew up just down the road from you, in Derbyshire.

    And I'm looking forward to tasting Vegemite when I visit my daughter in Australia for the first time next year. It might even be the highlight of my trip :D

    ALWAYS worth spending the money on the good quality bog roll and bread...... not they they are used in conjunction however. As for the Marmite, you should eat that in private, maybe in the jacks with your high quality TP.

    Similar alright in appearance. But it's rotten. Not a patch on marmite.
    When I'm hung over or sick I crave marmite. Even writing this now makes me want toast ( toasted on one side) and marmite.
    Forget about the vegemite. It's an imposter :-)

    I absolutely love blue cheese. Danish Blue, Cashel Blue, Gorgonzola, Stilton, whatever you're having, I love it. On bread, in salad, on pizza, even just straight up, and I'll have it.

    Agree with Graces that Marmite should be spread thin. I don't love it, but every now and then I do fancy a bit. I use it a bit in cooking too, to give a bit of an umph of flavour to the dish. Tesco's own brand tastes the same to me so does me. I've never had Vegemite.

    Love marmite and blue cheese. My Dad is a huge marmite fan so often had it growing up. Blue cheese is probably my favourite cheese. I would nearly even have the two together, ha!

    Ah checked the ingredients online and yes they have palm oil in them so will not ever buy or eat them...
