Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Did you see example 1 there? They seem to imply a 10 euro charge even on something which is below €22 with no vat collection.

Just an example I would think. They don't dictate who charges. Besides AN Post seem to be down to €3.50 now.

They could do a bit better on the example...there has never been a handling fee if below vat threshold but they are implying the €17 order will total €27.

I think anpost reduced to 3.50 due to upcoming changes where vat will be charged on everything even those under €22, as it would be a bit ridiculous for something that cost €5 to have a €10 handling charge on top of vat.

It does say on their website though that the handling fee is 1% up to max of €10, before the new year it was definitely a €10 flat rate. Info provided is all over the place.

just paid the customs charge but will certainly be following up on this, it shouldnt be the fault of the consumer if address pal have delays.

Judging from the amount of examples of less than €6 being collected , this isn't that they are doing on the ground. Notice the way they cover themselves with "My understanding...."
By the way, back seat modding isn't appreciated on any forum, just FYI.

If you have any other problems contact Revenue. I will keep the facts to myself. You are doing a great job as a moderator by the way.

If anybody wants actual real advise they can PM me.

A thanks would of done, but you think you are right always even though revenue confirmed I am.

What's next you going to ban me.

Go back to your thread in the Consumer Issues thread. Customs seem to be changing the goalpost. And yes, I will ban you if you keep it up with the backseat modding.

I am not posting across 2 threads as I said in the Consumer Issues thread.
I advised you to go back to that thread as it seems Customs have changed the links that you provided.

If that's on the An Post website, it's a typo, as the An Post fee has always been 1% of customs value, with a MINIMUM fee of €10. (Edit: I see now that it is. It must be a recent change as it wasn't there last time I checked.)

I'm assuming it's now changed to 1% of customs value, with a minimum fee of €3.50 but it's impossible to know for sure as the An Post website is so atrocious. For instance, anpost.ie/customs tells me absolutely nothing about customs! (You have to know to go to anpost.com/customs instead).

My package delivered to USA addresspal on 11 Jan . Still no email confirmed processing and tracking. Are they're any alternatives in the same cost bracket that provide a similar service but not so slow to ireland? I've got stuff from ali express china quicker this year than this item I ordered in the states.

My 14 kg Package was delivered the same day , I got Tracking info on the 16th , Latest update was the 18th saying "Your post has left An Post NEW JERSEY 07726, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA"

Last Monday was a US Public Holiday but its slow , Remember there is only a handful of Trans Atlantic flights each day compared to 30 or so pre pandemic so delays are expected.

Just got the email "Customs charge due to be paid , Hi Customer,
You are receiving this email as your item has arrived into Ireland from outside the EU and therefore Irish Revenue have applied Customs charges."

Duly Paid and expect delivery in a few days.

They lost one on me in October too, and after many many emails and countless phone calls to anpost and addresspal I eventually got refunded, just keep calling them and emailing, I know it's torture, best of luck

Did they refund you the full value ? Was it below the €100 limit they mention on their site?

Just talking to xxxxxxx in An Post Greenogue in Dublin.
She says that apparently there are approx. 30k Addresspal items stuck in Greenogue at the moment, the vast majority of them Addresspal UK items (though there are some US items in the mix too), because of an IT failure between An Post and Customs and Excise, which means they have no idea what items have had their customs charges paid, what items owe VAT and what items are exempt.
They're working on it at the moment, but with no eta on a resolution.
System has been down for 4-5 days so far.
Items that were delivered this week- were processed prior to systems issues.

Note: Greenogue is a brandnew facility brought online by An Post to deal with Brexit.

Wonder how this affects the deadline on paying the customs bill before parcel returned to sender?

Is it the anpost email you used? Anytime I emailed them previously during more normal times, I'd get no response or they'd come back to me after 3 weeks apologizing for the delay. There is no way they can handle this kind of volume, doubt anyone is even reading them. Just pay and then go after the refund, to avoid them returning the parcel to sender. I know it would be ridiculous for them to do so when the charges are wrong and not replying within an acceptable amount of time, but can't put anything past them to be honest.

I called them yesterday after the second time they failed to charge my card.

I was told that they wouldn't be returning parcels until the issue is resolved and you then fail to pay a few times.

Just this morning they processed my one item that was due December 28th.
So it's back to business for now it seems.

You will get an email with an AnPost tracking number as soon as it is processed in the UK and you can follow it from there to your home, You will get another email looking for Duty to be paid but that comes after you get the AnPost Tracking number and before it's delivered to your home.

Just from my experience, I received my order this morning, took 3 weeks. I received the text and email from address pal to pay customs 6 days ago, I paid it immediately. I checked tracking daily and it was listed as as LONDON, HEATHROW TRANSIT HUB up until last night. I then got a text this morning saying the package was due for delivery in up to 3 working days. Post man came about 20 minutes later and dropped it off.

So, just from my experience, tracking is non-existent and address pal is nothing short of useless as things stand.

Tracking of all mail seems to be very hit or miss. I sent a couple of items to a friend in Finland - their postal service is usually excellent & delivery is 5 working days. Both items took over two weeks with no tracking once they left Ireland. They wasn't any tracking in Finland either.

They sent me a package on January 13th. No sign of it yet.

w/r/t customs charges, are they automatically charged to your card like the AddressPal fee, or paid like they usually are (at the door or at the post office)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭Rewired

Edit: not automatic, can now be paid online or with cash at a post office. They will email you with a link for online payment.

Your Customs Charge can be paid either:
online at anpost.com/PayCustoms, using your credit/debit card and the Customs reference number detailed on the Postcard/SMS/Email; or
at any Post Office, using your credit/debit card or cash. Please bring the email or the card you received in the post with you to the Post Office.
Once your payment is complete, we will arrange for your item to be delivered.

Regarding deliveries from UK, when you say that a payment link is emailed suggests that it is not necessary to have provided your credit card details to AP beforehand and that payment is effected by the purchaser at time of receipt of email??

Not sure what the situation is at present as I have not had any transactions since December, but I remember getting an email from AP advising that credit card details would have to be provided and that AP would automatically charge this card at the relevant time. Thanks.

Just a quick one: did those 15.99 get counted towards 150e duty limit? A.k.a. to pay only the vat, if we're ordering through addresspal, is the limit "technically" 134.01e( us) and 143.5e (from uk)?

    Yes.
    Damn them anyway.

Just in case someone is wondering of the AddressPal process, here is my experience:

I bought something second hand for 50gbp plus 3.50 delivery in UK.
They charged me 6.50 euro when received into their UK hub and requested an invoice for the item which I provided.
I sent them the invoice and received a VAT charge to today for 17.24 (3.50 of which was a processing fee).

    So the main points are
    1) It's very slow. I am a week in and have not received the item yet
    2) They charge ROI VAT on the whole item price including delivery (I'm pretty sure they should remove UK VAT before the calculation)

It's just not worth it anymore buying from the UK apart from Amazon.

No, the €150 customs duty exemption threshold takes into account the intrinsic value of the goods only. Freight & insurance aren't taken into account.

    BUT...

If the intrinsic value of the goods exceed €150, then the cost of freight (including the AddressPal portion) & insurance is added to the value of the goods and duty then calculated on that entire amount.

No, its not up to anyone else to remove UK VAT but the seller

You could also argue it's not up to anyone to declare the value to customs but the seller. Addresspal obviously offer this service but to make it a viable business model, I think they will have to go one step further.

    It's a **** show at the moment.
Ordered a firestick using prime from Amazon on the 2nd Jan.
Amazon says delivered on the 4th to ADDRESSPAL address.
Got a customs payment request on the 10th, paid straight away.
Then bouncing from pillar to post in different Dublin warehouse 6 times.

Still not delivered to Co. Tipp nearly 4 weeks later!!
