Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Im over in the Netherlands for a few days and I've just seen streets of rage 2 in a retro gaming shop for €72.
Sorry I have no picture but if I'm back there again tomorrow I'll take one

Based on cutting edge hardware like the 360, he should be asking more!

How much would cabinet materials cost? The hardware components shouldn't be that expensive. Of course it depends what they have in there, but any PC in the last 10 years should be able to run emulators.

A budget brand 32" can be had new for €180 or step up to an LG for €250. A bare bones 3.8GHz quad-core Intel i3, 4GB Corsair DDR4 setup including mouse, keyboard and speakers would cost about €350. I'm not familiar with arcade controls, but they don't look as robust as the €150 X-Arcade ones.

Purely speculating however. But given the history of Adverts cabs, they're all lousy looking.

Agreed on costs. Finally got around to putting my diy cab together. Only a 1 player cp, and had an ancient pc (think along the lines of a 50 euro thing from a charity shop). Was less than $200 (I'm in the usa).
Genuine sanwa stick and buttons. 20" screen. Painted but no decals/overlays.
I'd put up a pic but my woodworking skills are horrendous! Semi gloss black hides a multitude of sins

are real cabs not ten a penny in the us?

Locally its worse than adverts. There's great availability from the likes of coinop warehouse, but cheap? No. Well, not less than $300.
Shipping across a few states runs to about $300-400.
So even if i got a "beater" to convert to mame or whatever, it'd be easily $400 before a single part is needed.
I'll keep an eye out of course, but in the meantime Thomas still needs to save Sylvia ðŸ˜

Not that I condone piracy but you could just get a Dreamcast for €70 and buy a pack of 50 CDs for €15. I also don't think it's very hard to get a console that plays backups...

I like music in my games though, so buying games has an advantage :)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,841 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I find plenty of those Dreamcast CDR games have major problems. The big releases usually have good work put in but the music is noticeably lower quality. Some of the more obscure ones are total hack jobs. Maken X for instance removes all of the excellent music in the game bar one track which is repeated all through the game.

There's not many expensive Dreamcast games so I just bought all the games I wanted for the system. Not as harsh on the laser either.

Anyway if you are going the piracy route, a SD card adapter for the laser is a much better option as long as you can find high quality GD ROM dumps and not the butchered versions that you can burn to CD.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,630 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

And then there's the SD card solutions, though expensive if you are a massive fan of the format might be worth it.
Otherwise, listen to Retr0, there aren't that many really pricey titles on the format so just take your time and pick them up as they pop up.

Just don't bother with that adapter that lets you boot from SD carDs in one of the back ports. It's absolutely rubbish due to the slow transfer speed of the port. :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭airmax87

Don't mind the CDR's myself but I had to buy a legit copy of VF3TB because it would just blackscreen after a while no matter what release or how fast it was burned, and I could never get the music to play on a bogey copy of sega rally 2

but yeah even the RAGE is cheaper than his listing

I burned off a load of CDRs a good 10+ years ago that I still use to this day. Don't actually have the facilities at home to burn discs anymore! So they've gone from being disposable copied discs to something I can't actually replaced that easily

Ah a USB cd writer is under £20 I think, so worst case that's an option.

Just had a look on eBay, there's a lot more Dreamcasts than there was a few years ago! I got mine from The Rage for €70 4 years ago, there was only ever 5-6 listed and they were selling for €70ish excluding shipping. Looks like a boxed one is around €100. Might keep my eye on a boxed one.

I'd like to get both Hello Kitty models boxed sometime...

Doubt the game is very rare, it was released very close to launch and I'm guessing sold well.

It's actually not a bad game. The arcade game is garbage but Capcom took it in house for the console versions and rejigged it to play like Super Turbo.

Good game alright. Definitely not rare though. It's nearly always seen in ps1 console and game bundles on Ebay, along with that Who Wants To A Millionaire game:pac:

You can pick up the Zelda bonus disk for the GameCube that'll include a host of LoZ games, including OoT and MM for around €40 and it'll also run on a Wii, which itself can be had for €25.

I understand the trend that everything old is worth something, well apart from me, but it's a shock to think that these persons of questionable gaming knowledge think that the PS2 is in that category!

Moron. It's an IRISH rock so it will only repel bears. You need a STICK to repel tigers.

Not sure if this is a regular here with this for sale.
He or she appears to have a couple for sale, home builds running on a RPi3. Seem to be nicely finished though I don't like the BN illuminated buttons and sticks.
€1500 though... Is there really €1450 worth of materials and labour in it?

12,000 games? That's some homebrew collection on there :P

I understand someone buying a cab like this, it would be an impulse buy alright. Casual gamer, not too concerned about the hardware inside it. Something cool for the living room/shed etc but €1,500? That's a lot of money regardless of what hobby you're into. €500 I could understand.

But €1500 is waaay too much, €800 seems more appropriate, no?

Even at 800 I think that's too much, that's not far off candy cab money. I know what I'd be buying and it wouldn't be that cab.

It’d still have a home in this thread for €800. Building these things is a labor of love, it’s not a viable way to make money. Apart from the horror of playing SMW with a joystick, the max this is worth is about €350/400.....max.

Absolute madness those prices alright, the Gamestop arcade machines will knock the prices of these down i think.
