Got mine a few months ago. Went to one of the booths are the local petrol station. Filled it in online with the code. My passport arrived less than 24 hours later. I couldn't believe it!

    Do you wear glasses ?
I do and it's impossible to get a photo with glasses to work, just took them off ...

I wear glasses and it accepted my photo taken with iPhone.

My passport was printed on Tuesday but still hasnt been posted. I travel On Wednesday but need to sort my ESTA also.

The person on webchat told me I can use my old passport if the new one doesnt arrive... anyone know if this is correct?

Just did this on Monday. Renewed passport and applied for first card. Admittedly it was a bit fussy about the photo, but I managed to get one accepted by changing how the picture was cropped. I'm in Edinburgh, so this saved me a load of hassle.

Will post here when I receive it, although it said it was estimating Friday next week.

My passport arrived today, so that was a week and a day to Edinburgh (actually more like just a week since I ordered it in the evening). Very impressed. Card still to arrive and it's still saying Friday for that. Will update when it arrives.

My card arrived on Friday as originally predicted. That means the passport took a week and the card took a week and three days (both to Edinburgh). Very impressed overall.

I wasnt aware you could do passport renewals if you were living abroad.

    Sounds nice enough.

I have to go to the Dutch embassy every 10 years. take time off and pay double of what it would cost me in NL.

And taking a pic with your phone acceptable?
There is only 1 photographer in Dublin who can pull off an acceptable picture for a Dutch passport.

I have to say, there is enough wrong in this country (but where isnt that the case?) but services like Revenue, passports, driver license are a lot more customer friendly here than where i come from.
Here they seem to actually want to help you while i am used to be treated as a nuisance at home at those particular offices.

It's awesome now, hands down one of the best services I have used online, anywhere. It is now so painless. Previously I would have to get photos taken somewhere, get a Notar to sign forms, send it all off to the embassy in Berlin, they would forward to Dublin who would then send the passport to Berlin and they would send it to me. Was a lot of effort.

Now I just take a selfie, upload it to the site and 3 days later I have it delivered. You can't get any better than that. Kudos to the government on this one.

Fair play to them so. I have a brother in England and for his last renewal he had to travel to London to apply for a renewal in person.

I think he'd be better to use one of the approved photo booths that send the code rather than faffing around with a selfie and risking them saying it's not correct so has to be redone.

I used one of them, applied for my passport on a Sunday evening and got the the passport on Wednesday. Excellent service.

Completely different and you know it. The passport is recognised internationally as a physical representation of your citizenship of a state. Why should I have to pay for that? Next you'll want us to pony up for our PPS number

What rubbish. Every country in the world charges for passports.

It's not a representation of your citizenship it's a document giving you the right to travel to other countries and only required if you choose to travel so it's only right that you have to pay for it as you actually don't need one to live in the state or interact with the government.

However you do need a PPS number to live in the state and there's no charge for that as it's a state imposed requirement.

    You're comparing apples and oranges.

No I'm comparing what was quoted above.

Also never got that phrase. Why can’t apples and oranges be compared.

Both are fruits, both have outer skin, both have seeds etc.

Applied last Sunday week, new passport arrived 3 days later. Cracking service. Well done to all involved. Gotta say this and the revenue  web service are very good. On the other hand, buying a dog license on line ..... from the post office. Still have no idea whether I actually purchased anything or not.

Took me two goes to get them to accept a selfie from phone (it was an expensive iphone so maybe that helped ). For the passport, that is, not the dog license.

Yeah and that's where the similarities end. Despite everything they have in common, one is still and apple and one is still an orange. They are not the same.

    That's what comparison is about.

Do you really need a detailed comparison of apples and oranges though? Sometimes it so obvious that two things are going to result in completely different outcomes.

What the **** are you even arguing about?!

The price of oranges compared to passports and how apples don't have PPS numbers even though PPS is in the word.

Just an FYI this service is incredible - I applied online Monday and I received by new passport in the post today.

Agreed. I think my application was done online last Friday and its Tuesday and I have it.

I renewed my passport last year. I remember thinking it was one of the slickest, most customer friendly, and technically advanced online services I’ve used. Like noteworthy in how good it was.
It was terrible. I took my photo with the magic code. But then I had to wait for it to be accepted and then they wanted my birth cert because of a typo.

It took from Sunday night until Thursday morning. Even had to wait until Friday , Friday! to get the card thing. Middle of summer is no excuse

Anyone know when I can renew my passport - can’t at the moment because of Level 5 restrictions - any chance the easing of level 5 on 12th April will allow the processing of renewing passports - need it for my Revolut card - they won’t accept any other form of ID. Thanks.

You’ll be lucky to get it this side of the summer.

I sent my passport for online renewal in the first week of January. I received it in the post in March. Absolute agony. Not going anywhere. Just needed it for ID.

Mine expires in June next year and I want to get back to Southeast Asia in August and worrying in case get stuck there and it runs out.

Might just have to apply for a British one instead. Fuming.

I applied online in Feb and received a message saying they are not processing applications until we get down to level 4 unless it's for essential travel. There is a web chat thing that you can use to contact them if there is an emergency. I need to travel a lot with my job so will be contacting them with a letter from my employer before the level 4 chaos kicks in.

Not sure if you have this sorted yet but I applied online on Friday last 16th late afternoon and Passport arrived yesterday, Wed 21st.

Not an emergency application or anything.

anyone used the online renewal lately?

meant to be flying the 19th but kinda getting nervous now, me and the wife both applied on the same day, she got hers within 3 days but mine is still processing. struggling to get through to anyone to find out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,560 ✭✭✭Squeeonline

Yup, I ordered on sunday, it's already in the post from yesterday. I'm on the continent so it'll take a couple days more for the local post to get it and deliver it.

Maybe there's a problem with the photo you submitted, and it's gone for some kind of manual review. The DFA website has a chat option and phone numbers. I guess keep hammering them until you get an answer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,438 ✭✭✭davywalsh7

yeah thats what im worried that theres an issue with it as the missus was similar to yours arrived within 3 days. just struggling to get a hold of anyone to check. ill keep trying, thanks

Any update on your's? In a similar boat myself. Ordered on the 29th, no sign yet. Got onto the chat and they said it was being checked on friday.

Flying on the 20th, I'm like a dog about this. Especially hearing that others are being turned around in 4 days.

I submit the wifes for renewal on Friday. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes. The online app is a breeze, it must be said.

Trying to get a new pp for the baby is proving quite the opposite experience. 2.5 months before they started looking at the application and now they're saying our witness can't be contacted (she's not had any missed calls from anyone this week - I'm assuming they know how to ring a UK number??) and now we have to submit that form again, by post ffs. That online tracker is absolutely pointless, why have a progress bar if its just an estimate and nowhere near accurate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,560 ✭✭✭Squeeonline

Slightly concerning - the next passport to apply for will be an irish one for my daughter. She'll first get a local passport of the country we are in, but we also are "entitled" to get her an irish one. We were thinking of waiting until we were back in Ireland to apply as it'll be easier to get it signed/witnessed at a gardai station.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,593 ✭✭✭theteal

I'm actually back in Ireland tomorrow and have already arranged for a garda friend to sign as witness

yea got same reply as u on friday thats its at checking stage, trying to get through to them again today, due to fly thursday gonna be very tight. dont understand how my wifes was processed and delivered within 3days, and im nearly two weeks now. we both applied the same day

I lost a couple passports about 4 years ago. They said it had to be manually checked because of that. even though they issued me a 2 year passport most previously, and that expired.

They said that my travel date was attached on the application and that they hope it'll get to me before that. They also can't guarantee anything.

    Stressed isn't the word.

Renewed book and card on Sunday. Book arrived yesterday, card arrived today. Very impressed with the service to be honest!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,560 ✭✭✭Squeeonline

I ordered book and card on Sunday 8th, to Europe. Book arrived on the 17th, and card on the 19th. The slowest part was shipping it. Otherwise, the order was ready by the end of the 10th and would have been with me 11/12th if I were in Ireland.

Can we get whoever runs this service to consult on a bunch of other services in ireland?

    Hi guys,

For those that recently applied online for pp renewal, when you checked the online tracker, did it give an accurate delivery date?

Ive applied to renew my sons, but it’s showing a 9 week delivery date. Travelling in 8 weeks so panicking a bit! Will try get in contact with pp office tomorrow to clarify.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,752 ✭✭✭beachhead

Dates are random-they do not necessarily match the actual delivery date.9 weeks seems long so worth your while to contact pp office

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,593 ✭✭✭theteal

That tracker is an absolute waste of time. They really should not give a progress bar when it does not relate in any way, shape or form to the steps they complete in the process, the date is plucked from the air. Anyway I'm currently on hold trying to get some movement on the baby's passport which I had to resubmit the witness form for - they said the original witness was "uncontactable" (which I think translates to "we don't know how to call a UK number" as she has no missed calls!). We started the online app in May and only a few weeks ago they started processing. The current pie in the sky date is 26/10/21 - I need it for next Friday or only half of us will be at the brothers wedding!

In positive news more directly related to this thread, the wife's renewal went through without a hitch and was delivered to our UK address while we were on holiday so I can't say how quick it was but I am utterly shocked at the efficiency - good shocked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,045 ✭✭✭silver2020

I think then Passport office is well able to ring UK number, european numbers, USA number etc. They've been doing it for years

Very easy for someone to miss a call especially if they are on another call. Or maybe the number entered was incorrect. Or maybe your witness is just saying that.
