    Coming March 16th.

From David Simon comes the next series dealing with alternative history based on the novel by Philip Roth.
The original six-part limited series will premiere on March 16. It comes from David Simon and Ed Burns, who previously co-created HBO’s The Wire and Generation Kill. The story “imagines an alternate American history during World War II, told through the eyes of a working-class Jewish family in New Jersey as they endure the political rise of Charles Lindbergh, an aviator-hero and xenophobic populist, who captures the presidency and turns the nation toward fascism.”

The Man in the High Castle: the prequel :D

I know it isn't, but hard to ignore the slight parallels

    From David Simon

    Sold!

Although, that doesn't look like the wire so I'm guessing this might be a little out of his experience zone. Hope it does well though.

David Simon and HBO are the best tv combination ever.

Spielberg was interested in doing a biopic on Lindbergh but was told in no uncertain terms by the other studios that if he persued the project he would never work again in Hollywood. His biography by Scott Berg is a brilliant read.

If that's true then fair play to David Simon's and HBO for taking it on as it is a sensitive topic.

1: Solid opener. Sets the scene. Get the feeling it might get pretty grim.

    Things I looked up
Goyim: plural of goy: a Jewish name for a non-Jew.
Nudge: Alternative Spellings: nudzh, noodge: verb: bore, pester, nag; noun: pest, whiner.
Putz: A fool, an ass, a jerk
Shegetz: often disparaging : a non-Jewish boy or youth. 2 : a Jewish boy who does not observe Jewish precepts
Shush: I think this is a persons name
Sheeny: (slang, offensive, ethnic slur) A Jew

Shush: keep it down, the news is on the tele

Is it more shoosh? That's as above, be quiet/whisper

I wasn't sure. They used it twice in the episode so I was just stuck on guessing it's a name.

Jeez this is getting grim. Not sure what they've planned for the last episode. Not watching the previews.

    Looked up:
Sh'ma: wiki - Sh'ma Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Eḥad: "Hear, O Israel: the LORD is our God, the LORD is One."

Henry Ford: Jeez that's alot: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Ford

Ah! I'd gotten into my head there was 4.

6 could be.. well it could go very grim or .. well at this point maybe a different shade of grim

    4:
The mother standing up against her Sister I thought was good. Saying that though Winona Ryder is putting in the acting to her role. Grimmest thought came when he was looking at the map and it had numbers and they were for camps.

    Looked up:
Zei Gezunt: be healthy, be well; farewell!
    Balabusta: a good homemaker.
Bubbe: Yiddish word for grandmother (had seen Safta or Savta used in Hunters)
    Prawns: are not kosher
Gay Kocken Offen Yom: insult: Go S**t in the ocean!

Judah Benjamin: Things becoming a bit clearer on the role the Rabbi is filling, his motivations and why https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judah_P._Benjamin

Another great episode. My only complaint would be that the Alvin's departure and return - considering all that happened in between - was a little too rushed. Everything in the show's world is generally believable and credible, but that bit seemed too expedited.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

5: That was chilling. Awe I guess the last episode is gonna be dark.

"Why don't you call von Ribbentrop?"

    Ouch!

I liked the ending...a message of hope intermingled with reality.

    6: Jeez that was grim.
The burning of the ballots at the end.
    Ouch.

Overall: Don't come to this show to feel uplifted. It did have that David Simon / Ed Burns combo feel to it though. A real gut punch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,434 ✭✭✭Homelander

Great show. Bit rushed at points, and the pacing was a little off in the last 3 episodes for me - the first 3 episodes were way better paced and structured, the last 3 felt like they were on fast forward a little.

    Excellent watch though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

HBO have the Commentary (podcast) for all the episodes up as a Youtube Playlist:
    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLO79iP69FaZP7xsOycx-FMBzRCMkD5E0M

I haven't listened to them yet _BUT_ the commentary for The Wire was really good so I'm guessing this will be too.

Yeah, excellent watch, despite the 'less-is-more' narrative jumps. It felt like the writers felt the audience didn't need their hands held; that we could fill in the gaps- of course we could, but it did jar a bit. I would imagine it was to prevent hindering the build-up of tension, which worked.
Really good acting all round, with spot-on authenticity of the era, adding to the believability of the unfolding counterfactual story.

Watched the first two on Sky Atlantic last night. I thought it was was intriguing, but still pretty slow. Does it get better from here? I'll definitely watch one more episode, but maybe not till the end if it doesn't pick up somewhat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

This eh.. probably isn't the type of show you are looking for.

    Why so?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    Why so?

cos it sounds like you want something different from this:
    but still pretty slow.

    when you say this:
if it doesn't pick up somewhat.

More things happen but the pacing is pretty much the same.

Just finished watching this and really enjoyed it. It captured the slow creep of fascism very well IMO. A second series would be equally fascinating.

Yeah, loved the ambiguity about FDR's election, what with the
    activities with the ballot boxes.

It was all quite cleverly done, though it felt a little contradictory/mismatching where
the fascism was built up to a crescendo with Lindbergh's disappearance, but just seemed to disappear after this in the lead-up to the election.
. It kinda felt forced/not believable.

I too thought it was a little slow, but very interesting, and was superbly acted and looked brilliant too. Would definetly watch a 2nd season

two episodes in and its not really winning me over so far, i really liked the Deuce and of course The Wire as well

i will stick with it though

Is there any word on a second season? If not, I'd go as far as saying it ended poorly.

Beyond that it was very good. Great acting, found the pacing fine but can see how some found issue with it.

Hopefully a second season to wrap it up, but the flaky ending felt final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,503 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

I found it just OK , wrapped up far too quickly
