Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Cheap Shot-On-Video films from the 80s.

    Anything in this 'genre' that you have a soft spot for? I'm talking about films that are,

    - Made with little to no budget
    - Amateur actors
    - Filmed on a camcorder usually

    Most would be totally unwatchable, but you get the occasional one that has an oddball charm.

    Doesn't have to be a horror although for some reason the vast majority of this type seem to be.

    There weren't any mainstream movies shot on video in the 1980s.

    Cinema Snob used to review a lot of shot on ****eo movies (as he likes to call them) from the 80s. Be warend some or most are absolutely terrible. Im not sure if Troma movies are all shot on video or mostly film but they are slightly better and have some charm to them.

    That's from the 70s though and like the majority of the nasties pre-dated video. They were mainly grind house releases which found a new lease of life when released on video tape in the early 80s.

    My point is digital video came out in the early-1990s and there are no cheap shot-on-video feature films from the 80s.

    There were a lot of cheap DIY films shot on camcorder like the aforementioned Violent ****.

    They were never intended to be released in the cinema.

    Major studios didn't like VHS but the public did so they filled a gap.

    Not seeing what point you are making.

    There is no difference between a German gore film shot on a camcorder and modern straight to DVD films shot on digital camcorders.

    Are you saying neither are proper movies because they were not shown in the cinema?

    Shot-on-video meaning recorded on video cassettes with consumer-grade video equipment. Occasionally referred to as 'shot-on-****teo' for the washed-out amateurish look that resulted.

    See 'Tales from the Quadead Zone' as a quintessential example. Or even our own Fatal Deviation. Actually, I'm not sure that one was shot on video, but it does look appropriately shi**y.
