NBA Live 20 / NBA 2K20

Game reviewer at metro.co.uk posted an NDA to Reddit today. Said he obviously can't say anything but 2k20 news will be out Monday.

No Live 20 announcement yet but apparently players were getting scanned for it a few months back. It's mad that both games which usually have a September release date can go so long without even an announcement.

So, any basketball fans, will you be flocking to 2K or boycotting it like so many say they will and give Live a go this year, will you get both?

What are you hoping for from either?

P.S. **** 2K and their greedy ****ing ways. When EA is your rival and call you out on your MTX (they promised to never have mtx in their career mode), then you know you are doing something bad.

In fairness, both companies are utter **** when it comes to MTX and pre sale monetisation tactics :)
I will end up getting the EA game for "free" with EA Access sooner or later!
I don't know if I can even give the 2K game the benefit of the doubt any more.
Luckily for me, people will defo buy it and let us know what it's like here :)

Cover above was confirmed as real with a little clip showing WNBA is in it now. EA forcing 2K's hand by adding Women.

They're probably adding the WNBA so those women can finally get a little revenue.
Or because they've run out of things to add to a bball game.

Will be avoiding it anyway as sports videogames aren't my thing.
The predatory microtransactions on top make it even easier to avoid.

    Why are people boycotting it?

Watched some of the finals this year after not watching any basketball for years. FINALLY, my old NBA Live tactics of shooting 3s from everywhere will pay off :D

People say they boycott 2k every year but end up buying it anyway. Basically their microtransaction format (gives you a really bad starting player, puts you into an online world and the chance to pay cash for VC to increase your stats, buy better moves, boosts and clothes. People buy VC at launch (have a look at the 2k reddit and how posters think they are beating the system by just buying the regular edition and 60 bucks worth of VC to get more vc than the legend edition), and as there is no match making, you get out against guys way higher level than you. You either don't play online or 'pay to win'. Even if you stay offline, your player is **** and if you drop 60 euro on VC, you will instantly have a much better time playing the game.

It's basically a mobile pay to win game but costs 70 quid that makes EA look like a charity.

Also, i hate the modern NBA of throwing up 3's from half court. Give me the 90's where a 3 was celebrated as a tough shot and most of the game was physical in the paint.

    It's very easy maths though.

    40% from 3 = 60% from inside

But it's easier to hit 40% than 60%, especially with defense on you.

Having tried to play 2K19 over the weekend, if the new game has the same set up I won't be going near it. I thought, I'll be grand, a few games in and I'll have the swing of it and work towards making him better. End of the Prelude I've gone from 67 to 68 OVR, and I can't do a thing in the NBA then. Defenders are stuck to me like glue, my character can't do any dribble moves that are effective, the sprint seems to have been reduced to 30 seconds max over the total of the game. The play-calling doesn't really exist so I've no idea what to do half the time (I have everything enabled, it wrarely works and always tells me to press [] every time I get the ball, which makes me shoot and completely miss).

Overall, in comparison to 2K16, it's just not enjoyable. I've the difficulty at Pro (the lowest for MyCareer) and I'm getting my ass handed to me. You weren't wrong about the amount of time it would take to level up, judging by how long it's taking to even get a chance at a shot. I've an SF build with Driving and Finishing as 1st and Defending as 2nd. I can't drive. I can't finish. I can't shoot anywhere outside of the Key, and even in there unless it's a perfect shot it's not going in. The game is just about playable but far from unenjoyable. If they do the same again, I won't touch it.

Hopefully with EA Access coming to PS4 I'll be able to try Live 19 and see if it's gotten any better since 17.

Ah crap sorry man, feel bad for recommending it now. I made a PG with Driving & Finishing and Passing and dribbling archetypes. I then got a good bit of vc from 2ktv episodes looking up the answers online and won some spinning the lotto wheel thing so got to 70 fairly quick. I was able to pull off dribble moves and make nice drives while actually finishing the layups and even though I put very little into 3's, I nailed a lot of open 3's so I definitely got enjoyment out of it. I think I was playing on Pro as well.

I've been playing Live the last few nights and having a lot of fun. I finish each session happy with my games and progress. I just wish it had a higher polish and more in depth modes. I don't play the nba season in it, just the street world tour and the Court Battle mode which is class. I've been playing the live events recently which used to be Co-op only where you would take on AI for great rewards but was so hard to win playing with gloryholes, putting up awful shots and feeling like they have to hit the game winner. Lost soooo many games because of that. They now have Solo events, unlocked some class animations, dribble moves, clothes and huge xp to level up my player. I really recommend Live 19 if you can get it really cheap to try it or wait for EA Access which I believe has it and there should be a trial for that also.

The annoying thing about 2k, it has the makings of being a great game presented right in front of you but has a very visible pay wall stopping you from properly enjoying it. Can't see that changing tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,279 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Don't feel bad at all, if I didn't want to buy it I wouldn't have! Just didn't expect such as massive change from 16, which was a joy to play. Even Ernie looks worse than 16, and the conversation between the 3 of them feels old and like there was no effort by them.

But I can see that the career side of things doesn't really bring the crowds, and the main staples of the games are not for me. Just a shame they ruined it. I personally think they should get rid of tying your Career to your MyPark/other mode characters. Have them separate so I can actually enjoy playing career!

Anyway, rant over. I'll get Access when it comes out and try out Live 19 then. EA are the better in this NBA mtx war, which is something I never thought I'd say.

Nba Live 20 delayed into Oct-Dec. EA said they are trying a new approach and will have more to share this quarter (july-Sept). Very interesting as they aren't competing with 2k (even though i was planning on getting live on launch). I wonder what the new approach is. Lots of mocap footage going around so they're definitely working on something.

2K20 demo (not prelude like other years) out on Wednesday. Community Day during the week where YouTubers went hands on. Very positive feedback but NDA is in effect until Wednesday when people will find out for themselves anyway. My Player seems to be way more customisable where you can pick the exact attributes you want but also your badges and takeover mode so instead of favoured archetypes like previous years, there should be more variety of builds.

The demo will allow you to bulk up your build to full rank for free so you can see what it will look like and make changes (attributes, badges, etc) as needed. As VC is so precious, this will prevent people grinding/buying vc just to end up with a build they don't like and start again.

If Live wasn't delayed, i wouldn't even entertain this but will be keeping an eye on it. Will definitely check out the demo.

2K20 career trailer. Idris Elba is your coach, Rosario Dawson is mother maybe?? Tom Middletich from silicon valley is your agent. Looks to be very drama heavy when the majority of people online wanted it back to basics. Looks interesting but obviously sceptical.

Well at least the character models look like they were made in the last couple of years. Starting to look realistic now. I'll wait to see what way they have the VC implemented, because if it's anything like 19 I will be steering clear.

I spun 19 up yesterday to play a few more career games but it's soul sucking. The gameplay is good but make tiny vc to barely affect my level, can't play park because they were empty and no one would pay with my 70's level guy, can't customise because everything costs too much vc, just not a fun experience.

I can see why people spent 60 quid on launch to go straight to 85 and grind from there. It's just a sad sad case when so many players see that as normal practice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,279 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Yeah, the progress is so slow with VC that it's put me off playing. And I was enjoying the gameplay. I've been putting the slow progress down to my character still being new to the league, but he's beast right now.

And I'll be honest, I was tempted to splash on the VC, but it's still too expensive to just get to 85 OVR. I totted up how much it would currently cost to bring all my stats to max, and it would be about €90. And that's not the end, as you unlock more stats to increase as you go. And as you noted, even the clothes cost crazy money so still in the lovely brown starting gear, and that won't change unless I win something. Did get a hape of free Jordan shoes for a contract though.

I spun the wheel on every login and won a bunch of clothes over my playtime so didn't have to spend a penny. I thought it was 60 to get to 85 but maybe it was more :(

My Player Builder and Career part 2 video release today with the demo. Someone leaked a vid early showing the new creator and have to say, looks like it's the best version in years. in 19, My playmaker had stupid badges like lob city passer and other ones I would never use, now you can choose what badges you want to unlock from the start and build on them from there. Much more felxible in what kind of player you can make and you can test out any rated version of your build for free to see how they will play out over your time with the game.

So the demo is a mixed bag. You can build 6 characters and play them in 1 game each before the demo locks you out. I went with a slashing playmaker 6'2 PG, my usual. Kept him at base rating of 60. Horrendous. It put me as SG. Missed every layup, shot, couldn't stay with my man on D, slow but wrist of all, poor fatigue. By the 4th quarter, i just left the controller down and went on my phone as i couldn't v do a damn thing.

Game finished, that slot locked out, ok onto my next build, exact same but starting rating is now 85. Still had me at SG but completely different game. Making tough layups, even got a monster dunk, fast, getting steals, driving past people with ease, much much much more enjoyable. Haven't tried any more builds yet.

It just makes me realise if you're buying this, the early getting to 85 will not be an enjoyable one. Now, the Devs said this is much quicker to 99 than last year and expects the best players to hit it within a few days of release. That sounds dodgy to me. Hard to tell if there's truth to it or if they expect you buy VC to get to 85 straight away. Chris Smoove said you need between 170 and 190k vc to hit 85.

As much as the red flags are showing, it was a lot of fun playing as an 85 so the temptation is there. Smyths are selling it for 55 which is also tempting...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,279 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Well let us know if you get it and if the grind is still there! Too much of a bad track record to take the splash, even at €55.

Gamestop have preorders for 10 euro when you trade certain games just for this weekend, i have one so will definitely get 2k20 with that.

Oh now it's tempting. Can get Detroit: Become Human in Argos for €20 (less than half price sale, normally €57.99!), add €10 and you'd get it for €30 total... Even with the thoughts of VC, it's tempting...

Edit: None of the Argos's near me have it in stock...

Edit 2: Fifa 19 is also on the list, can be got in CEX for €22. - No longer on the list

LMAO saw this doing the rounds and it's truly shameful. A lot of the conversations around microtransactions are hyperbolic, but this... it's straight-up a 90 second parade of glorified virtual gambling machines.

    Embarrassing stuff.

This has been going on for years in the series and way worse than what EA does in my opinion but doesn't have the popular market as other games do so goes under the radar. This is their most brazen gambling mechanic yet though.

Glad this is making the rounds outside the basketball gaming community.

Jesus, if this isn't just a mobile gambling game with a basketball game attached, then I don't know what is!!!

I think it was a bit on the nose, with the MT on the coins for MicroTransactions, but apparently it means MyTeam :D

That's the most egregious thing I've ever seen, a trailer for a basketball game which features some actors playing every casino game imaginable. There's really no one like 2k when it comes to this stuff, they'll make a full price €60 game, pack it full of as many types of micro-transactions as you can think of, and then go and stuff the game full of advertisements. Look at this unskippable cutscene from 2k18, nothing more than a nearly 2 minute long Mountain Dew advertisement: https://streamable.com/2jyeb

The people: Bring back park affiliations, different parks, rivalries.
2K: what's that? More dodgeball, formula 1 cars and trikes.

What the **** is this ****. Also, leaked news/rumor suggests you need to play 10k games to reach max rank in park :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,503 ✭✭✭marcbrophy

    10k games?
    That's totally doable!
At an average of just 2 games a night, you'd have it done in less than 14 years :D

Well 2k18 was hands down unanimously the most hated/awful 2k they ever released. 1000vc for haircut, unskippable cutscenes that would focus on some product for far too long, torturous grind.

I remember 2k16 and 17 getting a great laugh with lads on here in the park. Oh how it went to ****. Hope NBA Live can come out with something big for the end of the year.

Lots of live streams at the moment as the game is out now if you have a new Zealand account. I forgot how ****ing toxic the 2k streamers are. They are all playing 2v2 in the park and playing the same way. Bigman hogging the ball, spamming iso moves, not passing it to the open guy and then missing the heavily contested layup before screaming at the camera.

Seriously, how do people enjoy that ****.

Anyway, actually really looking forward to getting this tomorrow. I think it helps that I'm only paying 3 euro with a trade.

I've only played about 5 online games in total, and that is something I noticed, very little team work and lots of gloryhunting. Let us know how it goes and if the grind is not as bad as they claim it's not!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,901 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Well, usually i dive straight into my career but actually spent my first couple of hours in my team. Plenty of modes and challenges to unlock new cards, very addictive.

Played one career game, spent a lot of time creating a player, way more than usual in past 2k games. Story seems good so far, some quality actors like Idris Elba help things. I've read the prelude is 2 hours and you can't play park/nba til it's done but I've read there is a way around it. Enjoying it myself to keep going anyway. No idea of the grind yet, will have to finish this prelude but I'm reading it is quicker this year.

As for the gameplay, I think it's improved. Ton of complaints online about it being the same or its too slow but there are some nice differences. Movement does feel slower but accelerating feels faster so it's a nice balance.
You actually have to play defence this year. Holding L2 isn't enough this year. Reaching or holding the wrong direction can take you well out of position. Spam stealers can get blown by easier. You definitely have to concentrate on your defense.

If anyone gets it and wants a handy 2,900 VC, the answers to the 2kTV episode 1 are in the link below, well worth sitting through it for that.

The Prelude is a mixed bag. Spent a half hour earlier watching cutscenes with a 1v1 thrown in the middle of it. My missus looked up from her laptop at one point to say that she's watched me play this before but never seen so little actual basketball. So yeah, i can see why people are skipping it. Saying that, i did enjoy it, felt like actual grinding to get my draft score up. Turned down a movie shoot to stay at the gym and for a +4 boost in all physical attributes such was nice. Earning VC and putting points towards badge upgrades.

Chose bulls, clippers and celtics to train with and ended up getting drafted to the bulls first round, just what i wanted. Currently playing summer league with since snakey drama from my past thrown in for good measure. Think i might just have 1 to 2 games left to finish the prelude.

So far, with earnings, my 5k preorder and 2.9k vc i got from 2ktv, i currently rated 70. To put into perspective, in 2k19, i was 75 by the time i hung up the controller, best end of my first season. So the progression is definitely quicker. Saying that, i counted what i need to hit 85 and it's 170k vc so still a bit off from that.

Gameplay, I'm loving it. My 6'4 2-way slashing playmaker PG is getting B+ average in games, getting past the D, rarely miss a layup, very few turnovers, for a couple of steals and generally having really good games which means I'm enjoying it. Very positive early impressions.

I'm enjoying it more than last year already because it feels like I'm actually progressing and feels like my player belongs in the nba but i haven't even opened Park or made it to the NBA season start yet so still early days to tell. I played one legend game, a blacktop 3v3 consisting of the Bulls All Team, they all looked great but sorry, not sure looks wise compared to last year.

Played Park last night with my 72 rated PG. Most guys on were 80-85 coughBOUGHTVCcough. I was missing wide open layups so decided to stop shooting until i get my rating up. Park is much more punishing than career games in that regard.

Usual sucky things of waiting too long for a game and ball hog teammates who put up heavily contested shots but i got a game where it all clicked. 3 of us constantly passing and it was a thing of beauty. I managed a whole 2 points but got 11 rebounds and a ton of assists to finish with A- grade and the win. Ranked up a whole Park level from one game.

This year they have pro-am in the park 3v3 so might be easier to get a game going. Previous years, we struggled to get 5 people. Anyone have a team created i could join? I can create one later if not.

I got a gift of 50 psn credit and I've never been more tempted to buy VC, feels so durty :(

#fix2k20 was trending number 1 in America last night. Lot of people not happy. Loading screens are really long and I've seen other people have zero progression from games but people are saying the speed and stamina needs to be buffed but i think they're great at the moment. Lead dev said multiple times that this year, he wants turbo to be used sparingly, just used for quick bursts but the majority attend getting it and just want it changed instead of learning the better mechanic. Anyway, 2k deserve any negativity they can get.

2k obeyed the whiny youtubers who complained their characters are too slow (which is obviously making them look bad in front of their viewers). 2k made everyone faster and apparently bigs are just as fast as guards now. They said they know they went too far and toning it down asap.

I build a guard every year for speed. I forfeit strength and height and get plenty wrecked in park coming up against bigs but my perimeter play makes up for it. YouTubers like to make bigs who are fast and can shoot 3's (bull**** builds) and complain now that 2k20 has done away with them. Shame on the toxic community and also 2k for jumping so quick to their demands.

How are you getting on with this now Zero Cool? I was considering picking this up, however FIFA is out in a couple of weeks and I might get more value out of 2K if I pick it up around Christmas.

It'll probably be too late to get on board with MyPark or Pro-Am at that stage though as everyone will already have a million badges and 99 rated players.

Well, it's easily my favourite 2K in years (not hard though). Leveling up is way faster than last year but the badge grind is tough at the moment. Seems to be your badges matter more than your rating this year and people with gold and HOF badges will have higher success.

So, full disclosure, i bought some VC last night (not proud one bit but since I didn't spend any cash on the game and the psn credit was a gift, I said **** it) so I will give you my impressions pre and post vc purchase.

The game is out almost 1 week and I'm not getting as much time as I'd like gaming wise, but I still went from 60 to 72 as of last night. In 2K19, I spent months playing and managed to get from 60 to 75 so straight away, you definitely level up quicker. I'm really enjoying career games. The slower speed (still not actually slow but youtubers are whining about it) is a welcome change as my speed bursts out of iso have a real pop to them in comparison. I'm making drives, getting past players and finishing (I'm a 2-way slashing playmaker). My mid and 3 pt are low rating so not hitting many shots. My defense ratings keep in front of my man and either shut them down or contest the shot so I'm happy defense wise (until I come up against Kyrie).

Park, as much as I love the mode, is still a **** show. Waiting 5-10 minutes for a game only for a squad to rock up at the last second and take priority. Then when you do get a game, all it takes is for one guy on your team (and there's always one!) who is a Big 60 but wants to try dribble past people, chuck up contested 3's and then refuse to play defense. It ruins the game and your left waiting for the next one. Then you have lag/different shot meter timing and it's hard to even make a layup. I was playing with a fellow boardsie last night and we spent more time waiting for a game than actually playing. Fun when we did but our 3rd guy would ruin it for us by being a dick.

I created a Pro-Am team and this year you can play 3v3 in Pro-Am park so we could just matchmake instead of waiting for a game. If anyone wants to jump on the PS4 pro-am team, give me a shout. 60 rated brown shirts welcome, all we ask is you pass the ball :)

With the VC last night, I jumped to 87 rating (You can upgrade to 85 and then have to unlock cap breakers through xp to go up each level after that) I played a few games after that and it's so much fun. Dunking on guys, dribbling past people with ease and even hitting 3's. I thought it might have made it too easy but my Bulls aren't doing too well so it's a nice challenge dragging them to the playoffs. Also, grinding the badges is where the real end game lies I feel so they will take some time.

I'd definitely recommend picking it up but even if you wait for a sale, you can still have success at the park/pro-am at low level as long as you are with some friendlies. The biggest thing that loses park games is shooting contested shots. Passing to the open man is always the best option but rarely practiced among randoms. I'd love if more people on here had it so we could squad up in park or just play pro-am as that ranks up your rep, xp and badges. Devs said it even ranks up your badges quicker.

After that rant, I'll leave you with this. I bought the Jordan Kilganon (crazy dunker they brought in to mocap his signature dunks) dunk package last night and pulled off this beauty.

Yeah, it's a shame there aren't more people here interested. I don't really have much interest in playing in the park or ProAm with randomers for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I will definitely pick it up, just a question of when.

For anyone interested in My Team, the Triple Threat which is the 3v3 game where you pick any 3 players from your roster to go up against CPU or online opponent, is fully working now.

The offline mode was, well offline since launch with a mysterious 'under maintenance' message. It's up now and actually my favourite game mode in My Team. Quick games to 21 ala Park, you can clearly see the rewards you'll win for each game but now instead of a slot machine deciding what you win, a vault door opens to reveal your prize. Yupp, they never acknowledged the casino ****e after the backlash they got, just patched it out of the game and said nothing :pac:

First game i won, i got an 89 Lebron James free agent card, best I've gotten so far. Much prefer this to domination offline.

    Got this myself.

While the grind isnt as severe your player is still thrash in the NBA.

I thought it would be different playing the prologue as I was nailing everything and making contact lay ups.
Once the NBA season started it was back to the same old.

Not sure is it a glitch but im noticing a severe delay hitting pull up jumpers, I find some space and go to shoot and it seems to take an age to turn and shoot and the space is gone.
This was always a minor problem but the animation difference this year looks like a bug.

I like the changes to the gym, you complete the drills and they give you a 7 day boost. The gym was pointless as it was. I used to go in and stand on the treadmill and use my phone waiting for the boost.

The park is really where the game is at it's best but finding players is the killer.
I played with a lad yesterday who shot something like 2/18 and we still won.
I was taking rebounds and all as a PG and could luckily carry him (AI third player so he was just calling it off him if I gave it to the AI) but that kind of stuff is so annoying.

If anyone is on Xbox, give me an add.

    GilbertoGalway.

Im up to a 75 now so getting there.

You playing Pro-am to get the AI as the third person? Might try that as I had a disaster with park over the weekend. Kept ending up with randoms who wouldn't pass, taking awful shots and not playing defense. Very frustrating.

The slow shooting this year is because there is a shooting badge that is a necessity called Quick Draw. Expect shots to be slow until you equip this, should be the first badge you go for.

What kind of archetype are you? I built a 2way slashing playmaker. High dribble, driving and defense, low shooting. Shooting is reported to be notoriously hard this year until you get certain badges but i avoid shooting anyway so not affecting me much.

Fully agree on the gym, i have no problem doing that once a week for a nice boost. Training is handy to boost badges as well as you get x2 times the xp from coaches drills.
