Very true but I think the club has learnt a lot from it's failures in this regard.

About time, anyone would think Francis Jeffers was reason enough.

Off topic but anyone notice how busy the Liverpool thread is?

Arsenal's anxiety over Robin van Persie's next career move has been reflected by them barring him from talking to the press while on international duty.

The striker travelled to the Netherlands on Thursday to begin his national team's preparations for the Euro 2012 finals but Dutch reporters, who are used to a relaxed relationship with the players, were told that Van Persie was the only one who would not be addressing them.

"We made a deal with Arsenal and he won't talk to the press," a spokesman for the Dutch Football Association, the KNVB, said.

Arsenal are fretful that Van Persie, the talismanic captain, will ignore the new contract they have offered him and seek a fresh challenge. The player, who turns 29 in August, is determined to win a trophy and he has gone seven years without one at Arsenal.

He met the club's chief executive, Ivan Gazidis, and Arsène Wenger on Wednesday to listen to what they had to say, in terms of money and ambition. The manager was on record as saying that he wanted to resolve the situation before Van Persie linked up with Holland, partly to help his drive for new signings. He has already signed the striker Lukas Podolski from Köln.

But Van Persie, who has 12 months to run on his contract, has made it clear that he has no intention of re-signing at the moment as he waits for offers to crystallise from his various suitors. Manchester City and Juventus have a firm interest in Van Persie. The Professional Footballers' Association's Player of the Year and the Football Writers' Association's Footballer of the Year would relish an offer from Barcelona.

Lukasz Fabianski has meanwhile told Polish media that he wants to leave Arsenal after months of watching his compatriot Wojciech Szczesny from the bench.

"I hope that my adventure with Arsenal has come to an end," Fabianski told Friday's Gazeta Wyborcza. "I intend to leave and play in a strong league. I wanted to leave in the winter, too, but Arsène Wenger did not give a green light."

Fabianski, who has 20 caps, was named the Polish league's top keeper in 2006 and 2007 during his time with Legia Warsaw. He joined Premier League Arsenal five years ago but has not been able to secure his position due to injuries and some conspicuous errors.

Poland's coach, Franciszek Smuda, has called him up to the provisional 26-man squad for Euro 2012, which the country is co-hosting with Ukraine starting next month, but Fabianski is expected to play second fiddle to Szczesny again.

It seems to me that the lack of ambition from the Board and manager has caught up with the club. I don't blame RVP for wanting to win a trophy before his career ends and he won't win it here with a club that cannot hold onto it's best players. Last season was the straw that broke the camel's back for many fans when Cesc and Nasri were allowed go and only replaced with minutes to spare, indeed Arteta didn't even have time to have a medical. Why would RVP stay with a club that didn't show ambition ?

When was the last time Wenger picked up a 17 goals in the lge player for 8weeks of Djorus wages ....cmon Wenger stop buying hot an cold wonderkids and go find a decent value player ...

Grant Holt for 400k from Shrewsbury in 2009
He continued to score regularly in the npower Championship and helped Paul Lambert's side secure back-to-back to promotions, earning them a place in the Barclays Premier League after a six-year absence.
Holt's performance saw him rewarded with a new three-year deal at Carrow Road ahead of the 2011/12 season, where he shone and hit 17 goals.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭keano_afc

You're surely not suggesting we sign Grant Holt?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,154 ✭✭✭ImpossibleDuck

Well if you were to look at things from the Boards point of view -

    1. We sold our two best players and still managed third place and C.L. qualification.
    2. We made loads of money.
    3. We have a great manager who will get us into Europe even if we sell RVP.
    4. We can continue as we are.

That's what has been happening for years and it could continue until we don't make the Top 4 or C.L. Those twats seem to be happy not winning anything as long as they are making money and keeping the fans onside with loads of rubbish about strengthening and winning things.

While I normally find myself disagreeing with your posts, this is damn good one.
One that I hadn't considered; The board cannot view this season as anything but a success story. We sold our best players for heaps and bought in second-rate (in terms of money not talent) players, and still finished with automatic qualification which will bring more money.

    This worries me greatly

Haven't posted here in a while, I find a lot of you guys to be awfully depressing, although maybe you're just realistic.

I don't buy this crap about the board not caring about our failure to win trophies. Most of those on the board are Arsenal people who want to win, while the rest are guys that are smart enough to know that only through winning will you keep the fans happy. The fact is that we are and have been playing the long game, we need to remain patient. We moved stadium and have gone about servicing that debt in the right way. Manchester United are on the decline, as are Chelsea and Liverpool. People may talk about City dominating the league for years to come but I'm not so sure. The owners look at the club as a plaything, and like most toys, they will eventually get bored of it. If not, the Fairplay rules should help even up the playing field. I have no doubt that everyone at the club fully wants to win trophies and are going about doing that in the way they feel is best. Even if RVP does go, it's not the end of the world. How many times have we heard that we absolutely have to hold onto a guy only to realise that losing him wasn't so bad? Obviously it would be great to hold onto him, but I think we are just beginning to come out of a bit of a hibernation at Arsenal, and maybe it will take a few more seasons, but the pay off for the wait isn't too far away.

Rumors on twitter saying now that we haven't been in contact with M'Vila since we bid on him last summer.
But he is interested in joining Arsenal but nothing will happen till after the Euros. Apparently that "he will decide after Sundays game" was just a mistranslation.

@dvemail - you must follow gilbertosilver aswell, always a good source of info. Refarding the Kagawa signing, do ppl think we need another attacking midfielder, albeit an apparently good one

    Another? Oh like Wilshere....who isn't; or Rosicky....who isn't; or Ramsey....who isn't; or Arteta....who isn't.

We desperately need a midfielder that can score, Kagawa has 70 odd goals in about 150 odd games. He's exciting, talented and can create.

We don't have an attacking midfielder at the club. We have many, many others though who are just in between attacking and defending.

Take Rosicky for example, many would consider him our most attacking midfielder, yet he's famed for his tackling and has scored very, very few goals for us.

So yes, we need Kagawa, an out-and-out attacking midfielder, and yes, we need M'Vila, an out-and-out defensive midfielder. This all-rounder stuff isn't working well at all. Instead of everyone contributing, what's happened is the midfielders have abandoned all responsibility and both ends and happily graze in the middle of the park.

We've seen loads and loads of people criticising our players for not tracking back and we've all said countless times this season how we need someone in midfield to help with the goals.

I regard both signings as necessary unless Song decides to commit himself as a DM. We have no one who can decide to become an attacking midfielder IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,491 ✭✭✭stuchyg

Wilshere most definitely is, all through youth level was and was played in a more defensive role to give him a better understanding of midfield in the prem.

Rosicky - our most creative midfielder, while goals is important not the only criteria for the role.

How about pushing song further forward when Arteta is back fit with the Coq slotting in behind(see what I did there)

He is offensively-minded but despite how amazing he was last season, he wasn't that creative. He's a great midfielder and I love him to bits but he's not that type of midfielder in my opinion. Put it this way, would you be content with Wilshere as our main playmaker? I definitely wouldn't but maybe that's just me.

Rosicky is our most creative player, but how often does he come up with the assists then? How often is he the key to breaking down a defence? How often does he deliver that defence-splitting ball? While, again, I think he's a wonderful player, this isn't his forte in my opinion. Great player and very useful, just not in this particular role.

TBH, if we had this player, we wouldn't be arguing over who it is. The creative player in a team usually shines through and with us this season, Song has come the closest and that's simply because of his hollywood balls as they're being called. And unless we sign M'Vila, I'm not happy with Song pushing forward. We've been cut open too many times this season because of things like that.

Do we have any particularly good attacking midfielders? Arteta is more of a keeping things ticking over kind of player, Wilshere's more of a DM, Ramsey isn't playing well and Rosicky is that much of an attacking midfielder, he's more of a centre-circle kind of midfielder when he plays.

Yeah that is where i got it from alright.
Probably well off staying away from twitter for awhile, too many rumors and 99% of it is bollik.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,491 ✭✭✭stuchyg

rosicky I agree is more useful as a general central midfielder but wilshere will definitely fulfill that role, if you look to his early days or even the season before he went on loan he was regarded as a creative goal scoring midfielder, think it was young guns did a profile on him a few years ago to that effect.

I'll suggest someone else here and noone blow a fuse but what about Ramsey. I know he has taken a serious amount of flak this season(mostly harsh imo for a player in his first full season) but do we not think he has the goals in him for the job

from what i see regards rumours twitter's just anybody & everybody going "OMG <insert player here> agreed deal with arsenal #AFC" there might be some people on there to kinda believe when they say things but they seem to be journalists so you can read that on the papers' website anyway

the vast majority of it's bollocks that starts to snowball, worse than the papers

& someone posted on here that someone who does a arsenal blog or site tweeted that deals were agreed for 2 players but they couldn't name them or they'd lose their source. :pac:
More bollocks i think, what are the chances the next player arsenal sign are one of these 2 they mentioned? high i'd say, same for the next one

I could come on here someday & say something similar except i probably would be laughed outa it because i don't run a arsenal website

The best thing we can do is sit back and smoke our cigars and wait to see what the tide brings in after the euros. Looking at all the transfer talks online is a waste of time... Unless the club say it's finalized or Wenger says we are close to a deal there's zero point in believing in second hand sources because 90% of the time it's bs laced in false promises.

Craig Gordon released by Sunderland today. Anyone think we should make an approach for him? With Fabianski and Mannone looking to leave we need a keeper this summer, possibly two. Could do worse for a 2nd or 3rd keeper than a man who set the british transfer record for a goalie at the time and was an established international before all his injuries!

Only problem I see is that it has been a long time since he's played regularly. If he joins he will be sitting on the bench until Woj gets an injury. Could we be comfortable with throwing him in?

That said, we could do a lot worse and I think it would be a decent signing, provided we reduce the wage bill before we bring him in.

    Nope!

Wenger picking up a 13 year old instead!
(Though to be fair, it's only compensation that will be paid, and getting called up for the England U16's when you're only 12 is a very good sign of potential!)

no. he's far too injury prone, there's enough players at the club who be injured more than they play.

that's the only reason though, he'll probably end up being signed if them two & almunia leave.

Say good chums, has anyone noticed that those West Ham chaps are having a terribly jovial time with their promotion. What with their jaunty day out in Wembly, a trophy and then a medal for each man-jack of them?

I'm throughly chuffed to see them back though.

However, I doubt the stock of their trophies, what with them being from a lesser division.

Say, it makes me reminicise of the time those rough Geordies were handed the intertoto cup on a plate.

I care more about the 1st than the 2nd. Care most about the third though.
