Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

You're very kind but it could be wrong! It's a guess to get it started anyway.

I only noticed after posting that the second entry on the page seems to be for a twin of the first?

    Rootsireland has it as

Michael Connors of John Connors and Bridget Walsh
    Sp. May Corban Tedy Quirk

    Grennston

    and then
Judy Connors of John Connors (mother not recorded)
Sp. Teady Quirk and Judy Ryan

    Grennstown

    Hi,
Record No. 362, I am wondering what the cause of death for William McGrath? Acute ....... Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭VirginiaB

Can anyone read the age of the deceased on this death record from irishgenealogy.ie? Their transcription says 69 but it looks more like 89 to me. But frankly it doesn't really look like either 6 or 8, especially comparing it with the 8 in the 1872 date handwritten on far left and far right of record. Thanks.

    Gosh what dreadful writing.
Acute something. Could be an M at the start, but I think it's an N.
Could the next line be Sudden paralysis?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭VirginiaB

Thanks for that, Hermy. But if it's 8, it looks so different from the other two 8's on the record. And it matters as there are several of the name.

I agree, it does look different but I've often seen 8 written like that before.

Agree on the 8, sometimes they are even what looks to us like sideways.

Agree that the writing is very difficult to read, I can't even decipher the Registrar's own name. Sudden paralysis looks about right. William's age was a bit awry but has a correction on the margin! Many thanks.

This is a much more recent one compared to many put up here, but would someone be so kind as to decipher what is written in brackets after "Uimh 4"?

The birth was registered as the National Maternity Hospital.

    Thanks in advance!

Given the bit on front of the brackets is Irish "Uimh 4", we could assume the bit between the brackets is also in Irish?

AFAIK Holles Street is District Number 4 in South Dublin on certs in English, so it should be something like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,777 ✭✭✭BowWow

    Just a Guess...

    "Deas" = "South"

Seeing more of the page might help with handwriting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 394 ✭✭DamoRed

This is another example of why more of the original page needs to be seen, not, in this case, for writing comparison, as it's legible enough, but context. The word in question appears to be 'Deis' but is that short for 'deisceart' as referred to above? What are the places named on individual birth entries and what range of area do they cover??

Apologies, I was not aware of the need to post the full page, I should have checked this out on the forum.

The birth cert is my own birth cert which I need to get translated and for this reason, I do not feel comfortable posting it in its entirety. The phrase in the image is repeated again further down in the birth cert and appears almost identical.

Thanks to all for your assistance, Deis as an abbreviation of Deisceart would appear to be the most logical answer.

I'd appreciate any help with interpreting this baptism entry and could it refer to twins?

I read it as 'Dec 6th. Fanny & ???? Dan Carty & Margaret Delany'.

If it was, there should be two pairs of sponsors.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 77,021 Mod ✭✭✭✭New Home

Can't the sponsors be the same for both?

  • Registered Users Posts: 42 Caxton

As I understand, there is no requirement for two pairs of sponsors, under Canon Law. It probably comes down to local 'Custom & Practise'.

Silly question here, but how you paste something in to your message? I am trying to work out a signature, but I am not sure how to paste the screen shot in to a comment!

    Thanks

If you go to "advanced" you get a page where you can attach a jpg.

But the link and details of which part of the page is just as good. And please put the link either way.

I can see where you would get that Shifty, but there would appear to be an additional letter in between the l and m? I was thinking the last three letters are ina? First letter looks like a capital A?

That's it. Giving a link to the source, or a description of the document if it's not available online, allows other users to see the full document in its proper context which makes the job of figuring out hard to read items much easier.

This look like another daughter born to the same couple but while the mother is Abina on the baptismal record she is Abigail on the civil record.

EDIT: Baptism is Oct 14th - about half way down the right hand page.

Excellent work, same address, parents, etc. It must be Abigail, with "Abina" a colloquial version of the name.

Thanks for looking in to this guys.

I hadn't come across Abina myself before but there are over 700 examples of the name in the 1911 census.

I've never neard this name before so did some poking around on the internet. There is a Rootschat thread that says it is an Anglicized version of Gobnait, a medieval Irish saint, and that the name is mostly found in Co Cork where the record under discussion here is from. For what it's worth.

Just searched the 1911 census myself--774 named Abina. Rough estimate--700 in Co Cork. Interesting.

I was at college with an Abina from Cork. She told me the Irish for it was Gobnait. I always thought Gobnait was a made up 'comedy' name. Likewise Ballydehob. College taught me a few things. :)
