Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Liam Miller was my age group's what could've been. We were all in primary school and we saw this young Irish midfielder popping up for headers in big Champions League matches for Celtic. We loved him. He signed for United and it was the biggest news ever in our school, this was to be our Keano. He was destined for big things.

Unfortunately he had a bad spell there and rocked up at Sunderland and it just didn't work out for him. Still kept up with what he was at and was gutted to hear he was in very poor health. Lost a few people in the last few years this way and it's never easy knowing any sort of fight is negated by the pain and quick spread of it.

God Bless Liam Miller and my condolences to his family, friends and past colleagues.

RIP Liam. My condolences to any friends or family of Liam reading this thread. He gave his all for every club he played for and put his heart into every one of the caps he earned for Ireland.

Far too young and such a shame.

Ah God no. Jesus, I knew he was ill but this has really knocked me for six. :(

I remember Liam well as being a key part of that Championship winning Sunderland side under Roy Keane in 2006/2007.

Only 36 years of age and had 3 young kids. How ****ing cruel. :(

    How utterly, utterly sad.

Only diagnosed in November, sobering how quickly it can take someone.

My heart goes out to his family.

I remember when he signed for United, had high hopes he was going to be the "next big thing", all that bull fades into insignificance when you hear about something like this.

    :(

It must be over 15 years ago, but I remember taking my son to an Ireland under 21 match while Miller was in the ascendancy. He was one of the few on the team that day that stayed in the tunnel and stayed there signing everything that was put in front of him for about 10 minutes. I remember at the time he was a little taken aback, that it was him who the kids wanted to sign things. Back in those days, a Celtic player playing for Ireland would have attracted the attention of local Celtic fans.

Crazy to think a player who I had seen as a kid is now dead. RIP.

RIP, always seemed to come across as a 'nice player' which probably reflected his personality off the pitch as well. People getting struck down like this is a depressing thing to read about.

He scored the third goal in Staunton's first game in charge, a 3-0 friendly win over Sweden. Was a super goal too. About 2:20 in:

Also, a cracking day this was with Miller supplying the winner in added time via a header:

He lived the dream to be fair to him. A Cork lad playing for Celtic and Man Utd, Sunderland under Keaneand a few Ireland caps too. Plus most importantly CCFC :).

Horrendous it has been cut so short.

Fúcking Cancer. I’m blessed that nobody in my immediate family has been stricken with this but I’m sick of it regardless. Too many people being robbed of their lives. Very sad news but also highly infuriating too. RIP Liam Miller.

RIP Liam. It happened to my oul lad where he went from being diagnosed to his grave in the space of 3 weeks, but at least he was 74 and lived a good life and saw his kids grow up.

Seeing someone go in similar circumstances at the age of 36 just sickens me to the core. Thoughts are with his family.

    RIP Liam Miller

When you start getting older your mind can tend to build up with worry when you read about these things and also when these things happen in your own lives. A bit of faith helps.

Amazing how much impact someone you never met can have on you.

36 ffs, it's just not fair. **** you cancer you ****.

Jaysus awful news to wake up to. These things happen in life but but some really resonate for me.

Loved when he broke on the scene at Celtic, he was one Ireland player I really hoped greatness for.

    RIP young man

Did not like the manner he left Celtic but fcuking hell... RIP

    RIP Liam

Heartbreaking for him to battle such a horrible illness at absolutely no age, I think everyone's thoughts are with his wife and his 3 young children.

It was great to see him playing in the LOI with Cork a couple of years back. His technical ability and calmness of the ball was a cut-above and a real treat to watch in the league. I always felt the Man United move was too soon for him (though who could have turned that down) and did stutter his career, he would have had more Ireland caps to reflect his talent

My heart sank when the news first came out that he had pancreatic cancer. One of the ones that is usually discovered when it's too late and the end is nigh.

He's younger than me...which sends a shiver down my spine.

I remember how exciting it was to see him play well in the CL with Celtic. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Very very sad news. Such a quick timeline between diagnosis and death. R.I.P.

I’m sure there isn’t a person on here who hasn’t been touched by cancer directly or indirectly. It’s just an awful indiscriminate disease. :(

So sad to hear this. 36 years old. No age at all. At times like this you have to put rivalries to one side and think of the loss that his family and friends have suffered. Horrible, horrible disease. RIP.

    ^^

Great idea except they are having it on a fcuking Tuesday afternoon. I know he was from cork but surely a little bit of forward thinking could have been used and hold it in the Aviva on a weekend so as to maximise attendance. Have the gala / meal thing in cork.

Stuffy GAA unwilling to bend the rules to have it in Páirc Ui Caomhe, bad form

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,961 ✭✭✭markcahill1985

Agreed its bad form by the GAA. Potentially losing out on well over a million for such a good cause. Hopefully can get tickets now, looks like there will be a good line up of players.
