All Moai have bodies.

Moai were stood on stone platforms called Ahu. These platforms are ceremonial and found throughout Polynesia (under different names and somewhat different in design depending on the place).

These Ahu were at the sea edge, and had Moai placed on them looking inwards (not out to sea like some people imagine).

Interestingly, a number of Moai are found inland, and buried. They are at Rano Raraku, which is the quarry that almost all of them came from. There are actually two types here. Most are still attached to the rock, and are not commonly seen in pictures. The others, like in the picture, are the unfinished Moai that are buried in the quarry run-off. We don't really know why these ones were abandoned. Unfortunately, the image of Easter Island is often that of these buried stone heads, rather than the more elaborate and finished Moai that stood on Ahu.

When originally constructed, the more fanciful (younger) Moai had eyes placed in them, and red hats too.
