Hi all I was late for work this morning, in the van and in a bus lane on the quay bout 7:20. I know I shouldn't be but folks just wondering, I got flashed by an unmarked BMW nice and shiny lol pulled over straight away they pulled up beside me told me to get out of bus lane and literally drove on. Will I get anything in the post? I didn't get anything from them, just told to get out. Will I be ok? Tbh I doubt they were traffic core more than likely plain clothes and armed lol

What hours was the bus lane?

    I wouldn't worry about it

Not a clue tbh I'd say it was in alright, they just pulled up and said get out of the buss lane and that was it, I would have assumed you would have to get a ticket or something to get a fine tbh

You'll probably be fine. I got a ticket in the post without getting stopped or spoken to by a Guard at Whitehall church. I was turning left and went into the bus lane after the church as there was a queue up ahead.

The Guard was up at the church, he obviously didn't like that fact that I entered the bus lane 100m before the turn but didn't have much of a choice.

Just a fine with no penalty points.

Some of the special units could be driving anything, I would imagine it was couple of detectives who couldn’t be arsed writing up a ticket and just told him to move.
Happened me last year they just pulled up along side and flashed the warrant card and told me to move and they were in a Toyota jeep ..

Possible but from the sound of it more than likely he was stopping you from getting caught. Unmarked BMW wouldn’t be used by the AGS RP. Most likely the detective/cab etc etc unit and they are not really in the business of writing tickets.

They do indeed, they're normally armed Garda if they're in a BMW.

Yep, they do indeed but dark ones and unmarked. I've seen them with lights on a few times on the M50.

You should be fined but you won't. Because driving in the bus lane is not seen as a "real crime" however inconvenient it may be to bus users.

The ASU use marked BMW 530d cars, not IIRC unmarked BMWs.

Lesson learnt alright and I never said the it was unfair. I just joined the end of the queue to turn left although it was now backed up into the bus lane.

Next time I'll just hold up the rest of the traffic going straight, although once people are in the lane they're very unwilling to let you in even though they entered it illegally.

ASU will be in a red striped car. All the response/pursuits are AFAIK.

Detectives ARE armed but are not in marked cars. Thats what Ace is talking about.

Hopefully GreeBo will be right behind you while you wait for a kind hearted flouter of the bus lane rules to let you enter in front of him, because you're holding up all the traffic going straight ahead to Drumcondra. It'll probably be a long wait, given the mess there and the little likelihood of it actually happening, but hey, you'll be doing the right thing after all. At least GreeBo won't be blasting the horn at you and yelling "you could see it was blocked up, why didn't you get in earlier?" (I've left out the expletives and 'you twat' that usually accompanies such helpful advice).

Actually, it grinds my gears to see people jumping in early, but I too have been the softie that ends up floundering trying to get in because all the cheaters won't give way. AND receiving helpful directions from behind.

Thats exactly what you should do, its not your issue if others are blocking you while breaking the law any more than its your fault that a red light means stop.

A bus lane that everyone enters early defeats the point, it supposed to let a bus skip the queue, not get stuck behind a different queue!

Perhaps you would prefer the OP to drive down the path so?

Dont worry about what others are doing, you can only control your own actions.
Unless you live your life according to a 3 year olds morals "But they started it!"

Hey GreeBo, I suppose you've missed my (admittedly poor attempt at) humour, apologies. I'm pretty sure you would not be the one beeping the horn and gesticulating, but there are many who would - I've met them.
Not wanting to deviate too far from the title, but have you ever sat at a Red light for turning left, only to be blasted by the ignoramus behind who wants to go straight?

So basically my sentiment is, that while I don't enter the bus lane early myself, given the scenario above I can well understand those that do - well those that do if its filling up with cars turning left.

    - well those that do if its filling up with cars turning left.

All that attitude does is perpetuate the problem and in fact make it worse.

If no one did it then there would be no issue getting into the lane at the correct time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 584 ✭✭✭neonman

They've done a fine job there now blocking you from entering the bus lane until you're legally allowed to and it has improved the flow of traffic in general. You still have people abusing the bus lane - which does my head in.

You'll always get people doing it. It is a shame that they don't have licence plate reading cameras pointing down the bus lane it would soon put a stop to it although putting in such a system would probably be too expensive.

The Roads Policing Unit do have some marked BMW's aside from the specialist units. They're starting to rollout more powerful cars for the RPU as standard.

There are a lot more armed Gardai in Dublin then just the RSU (Regional Support Unit, they aren't called ASU).

Dublin RSU are a relatively new addition. Dublin has had plain clothes, armed detectives driving around in unmarked cars including BMW for decades. Special Branch detectives and various other specialist units.

I'm glad to hear they are taking the time to shoo people out of bus lanes when going about their day.

    Tell that to AGS...
Armed Support Unit in the Dublin Metropolitan Region (DMR)

On the 14th of December 2016 the Armed Support Unit was launched in the DMR under the control of Detective Chief Superintendent Special Detective Unit.

The Unit has been very active since its inception assisting local units in the execution of warrants, high visibility patrols, spontaneous incidents and checkpoints under Operation Hybrid.

Apologies, you are correct, the Dublin unit is called the ASU. They are called RSU is the rest of the country. They were introduced in Cork, Limerick, etc. a good few years ago as the RSU. They were only introduced in Dublin in 2016 and they seem to have renamed and re-arranged the command structure since then.

BTW not to be confused with the Garda Air Support Unit.
