Nice car, but where did you take these pictures? -40 degrees on the dash

Outside temperature sensor goes bonkers on these, they read -40 to tell you they're broken :pac:

Howdy, I've been through the last 10 pages or so and still wondering whats the best one to get, apart from the negative comment about the Yi.

Any suggestions for the top 3 to consider and as an aside is there any way of adding the top 3/5 cameras to the OP or some other way that the list could be easily found and updated to save thicks like me asking the same question as models develop?

In an ideal world I'd like to be able to move it between vehicles but that may not be viable or practical.

There isn't much point in adding the top 3 or so to the OP as your circumstance may change from mine, and as soon as a new camera comes out which is "best" we'd have to update

Instead try to describe your requirements:
Do you only need a frontfacing camera or also cabin view?
    Budget?
Start automatically with engine or always-on?
    Removable? Yes
    etc
    etc

Reviews can also be got on the net

Just wondering if anyone has one of these:
    SJCAM SJ4000 Wifi https://sjcamhd.com/sjcam-sj4000-wifi/

There an action camera but specs look pretty good. It's small and can be located behind rear view with a mount of sorts. There is a vid of it working and you can easily read sign posts and reg's etc.

The 312 has wifi too, picked one up a few weeks ago in there.

I think i will go with the 312 wi-fi one in Halfords .- Apart from budget , it seems to have best reviews of the lot in Halfords , .
I know night vision may not be strong .

I will also get them to wire it up for €35 + mini-SD for €18

Thanks for the info, found this site also and have had a look. The Transcend 100 would probably suit me and its on amazon with suction mount and 32GB card for £75.00

Seems like excellent image quality and an f 1.8 lens so should be good at night. Anyone have any issues with this one or reasons to steer clear?

That was one person with an incorrectly configured dashcam. I'm running the international YI with the latest firmware at 2304x1296 and the quality is amazing even at night. The YI is probably the best in its class for the price, i paid €61 euro all in (avoided import duties)

Bought this as a local hack/car for transporting the dog to the beach. Just not using it for what it was intended so no point keeping it.

Tax is out the end of this month, NCT to December. The last owner had it 11 years, it's got a few minor battle scars but is presentable and still starts and goes as it should. Low miles for the year too - 2001 D4D with 160k miles. Have history up to 60k miles, been promised more receipts...not that it makes much of a difference either way at this end of the market but apparently they exist.

Geekbuying have the international version Xiaomi Yi on sale from HK warehouse for $64.99. Amazing price for this dash cam. I bought one from Hong Kong and it came via germany without any taxes so potentially €58 all in. No camera comes close to it in this price range.

If only it had a slightly smaller form factor and a much smaller mount, I'd be very interested :o

With these bad boys yup: https://dashcamtalk.com/itronics-itb-100hd/

Although I got 3 of them and 1 developed problems and they were pretty pricey :D

And these for the tech at the time were great too: http://www.cnet.com/uk/products/x-driven-drs-1100-drive-recorder/

When you get a mini 08XX without problems, they are great, but have had issues with more than one of them too
    :D

Not exactly like for like, those retail for about 5 times more than the YI and from the footage i saw on your link the YI has better so i would not be happy paying nearly $300 for a camera with lesser video than the YI just because the form factor is better!

Oh yeah, definitely not, that's why my last few dash cams have been Mini 08XX, the itronics are great, but the mini's were almost the same for a lot less, but they proved to be quite problematic, if the YI was of good build quality and had good software (which it might do, I haven't looked into it too much), it's probably a great buy, if it was a better form factor, it would be brilliant and no way I'd pay $200+ again if the same can be gotten for €60.

The international YI has great build quality and good software. Only change i would make is to have a black version. It is based on their best selling action camera hence the form factor. If they release a YI 2 dashcam based on their new YI 2 action camera it will blow everything else out of the water

Looking for a new dash cam and not going to spend ton of money. Seen this on Amazon and seems decent. Good features, "Super HD 1440P", GPS Logger,Loop Video Recording and Car Plate Number Stamp which im not sure exactly what that last one does.
    What do you guys think?

    Hi all,

I'm new to dashcams but handy enough with consumer tech, phones etc.

I'm about to purchase a 2013 VW Touareg and I'd like to install a discreetly wired dashcam with the following attributes:-

Do you only need a frontfacing camera or also cabin view? - Front facing only. Rear facing would be a nice to have but not essential.

Budget? - Flexible. I'm going to have the car for 5-6 years so looking for a good performer which will last. Always looking for good value for money though.

Start automatically with engine or always-on? I think always on. I reverse into my parking space at home at night so the camera would be facing the entrance and could act as a useful CCTV camera at night.

    Removable? Not sure.

Wi-Fi - Yes. Where I park at night it would be within range of my home Wi-Fi so I like the idea that I could access it over the network, review the last 24 hours (or whatever time period is normally kept on a continuous loop) and select any footage I wanted uploaded to Dropbox or other online storage.

I'm looking for a) help to identify the right unit to purchase and b) a recommendation for where I can get it professionally installed. (I'm based in the Stillorgan/Sandyford area)

    Cheers.
