Seems to have gone off the radar, which is a shame. Hope that she might still do some work - may be in need of a Breitling service in the next 12 months.....

I see they are doing something with their website.

Maybe they are planning to rise like the phoenix from the ashes. I hope so. The lack of affordable servicing options for mechanicals in Ireland is seriously making me consider unloading a number of my mechanical watches.

With the we relatively weak £ at the moment there might well be options in the UK worth considering.

I have a russian Buran choronograph, using the 3133 MakTime movement, that needs an essential service - no idea where to go with it though, any ideas would be appreciated though think I may (per above) just have to sell it as it is.

Big problem with this is that you can't get insurance from anyone to send a watch in the post so you are running a risk posting it to the UK.

FWIW, I sold a watch to someone in the UK and was able to get it insured. Crowd I used was Mailboxes etc on Lombard Street. It wasn't cheap though - think it was about 70 quid.

DHL will insure watched up to €2500 for an extra charge. I confirmed this in person at their office on Pearse St. Cheaper than Mailboxes Etc.

There's also the option of driving to Newry and posting with Royal Mail. It's only an hour from Dublin, and it's about €20 to send a €3000 watch overnight to the UK

Might depend who you get so, I went in and they told me they wouldn't take it!

I look at all of these things with blinkers on, apologies :o

Before I bought my Longines recently (spent 6+ months thinking about it), future servicing was an issue I considered.

I plan on sending it to.....
    http://www.bablas.co.uk/watch-repairs/longines-watch-repair/

Using ParcelMotel with extended liability to €1500...
    €1500 Cover – for 14 days at a cost of €10.50
    http://www.parcelmotel.com/extend-liability/

That'll do me but of course wouldn't suffice for folks with more valuable timepieces.

I'm a big fan of parcel motel.

That's weird. I was sending a watch to the US and the guy rang their head office and got confirmation on the phone that they cover up to €2500.

I'm getting more and more the impression within watch collecting worldwide that servicing is affecting attitudes within the hobby and it's hitting pretty much every segment of the mechanical watch industry. New purchases are starting to be hit by the manufacturer's price gouging when it comes to servicing. More and more people are seeing the blatant ripoffs involved. The same manufacturers stopping parts supply to independent watchmakers is hitting the newer and the more vintage market. As history has shown the Swiss seem almost programmed to cut off their nose to spite their face and they're at it again.

Does anyone know if Emily has definitely stopped? I text her but have had no reply. I need two of my watches serviced and was going to send them to her as she has done really good work for me in the past. My only other option is the authorised dealer at triple the cost:(

Great if you can get a guaranteed parts supply. The problem is that's becoming increasingly difficult as the major brands cut off said supply so they charge their rip off prices. If people can't compare prices they'll start to believe that yeah a 1000 quid is good value for an Omega or Rolex. It's not.

Lots of failed attempts at communications from others as well.
If she hasn't stopped, she isn't doing her reputation much good at the moment anyhow.

TBH one major thing that latterly influenced the growth of my interest in early high end quartz was the mechanical servicing issue, especially the local Irish one.

Having a selection of mechanical watches that one intended keeping longterm could well cost a right few hundred every year

I do hope all is well with Emily, only ever heard mention of her on here.

I know a chap who is in his 70s now, watchmaker by trade but he had to give it up in his early 20s due to migraine.

That aside he reckoned it was grim enough job all considered, lonely, a bit repetitive. In saying that he has a twinkle in his eye whenever he describes at a high level how he'd strip a movement, inspect, lube and reassemble so it wasn't all bad :)

Was chatting to a guy at work over lunch, he has a nice vintage Seiko from the 60s originally owned by a relative, found in a drawer, non runner type thing.

Large jewellers in Cork City wouldn't take it on.... he sent it to this chap... http://thewatchspotblog.com/

Back in a week or two working perfectly, he can't remember what it cost but he said it wasn't at all out of the way.

Might be of interest to some.

This guy is called Richard Askham. He has an excellent reputation on the timezone uk forum. Particularly excellent for vintage watches.
Only problem is he lives in Yorkshire!

I came on here looking for watch repairs and spotted a glowing review for Emily. Then found this blasted thread!

Anyome ever use http://www.watchfix.ie? Have a vintage Omega Geneve that needs a repair. Don't fancy paying more than the cost of it for repair!

I'm very interested in this also. My Breitling Aerospace 'Rep. Mins.' had a new battery recently and has died. I'm reluctant to take it back to the chap who changed the battery - not worth the hassle....

If these guys have a good rep, I'd happily get a quote. The watch might as well be serviced at the same time...

Just looking at the Facebook page and they seem to have a good spread of vintage models they've repaired, from Patek pocketwatches, through chronographs to Accutron tuning forks. That bodes well, for the vintage types among us anyway.

Has anyone any feedback about watchfix? Need to get my pam serviced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 mackTheKnife

    Bump !

Same issue ... need a battery/service for a tag link. Any feedback on watchfix, used Dawson Jewelers before and they didn't do a good job, Emily had to sort it out.

Thanks for the comment @893bet ... so maybe a better question, is there anyone in Dublin or close by you would trust to replace a battery on a quartz tag, reseal and polish. Or should I just send it back to tag via one of the jewellers ?

For me watchfix advised to get the ad to send it back to get the srevice done. I take this as a good thing that they know enough to know what they can not do.
