I'm upgrading soon so will be selling some old stuff. Wondering what, if anything, you guys think it might be worth. I have a Samsung 24" 60hz monitor, a i7 930 and Asus P6X58D-E mobo and 12GB of triple channel Corsair dominator ram. Think I have a cooling fan for the Ram too which I never used. Also have a corsair H50 cooler which I'll probably replace for a bigger one. I don't think I have any of the fixing parts for other mobos except my own but have to check.

All works fine, only issue is the mobo, the USB ports are a bit hit and miss, work most of the time but randomly stop working on and off.

I'd be interested in the RAM and cooler, If you could give me a heads up when your putting them up for sale that would be great! Is this the RAM?

Would be hoping to get rid altogether but yeah I'll keep you in mind. I think that's the ram I have, there's no picture so can't be sure. I'll open it up later and see the model number.

I don't think you'd get much for them at this stage - especially with the USB working on and off, I don't think you'd get more than about €60 for CPU and board. The CPU itself sells for about 30-40 second hand. It would probably be easier and yield more money to sell it all as an actual working PC rather than in parts....and just build a fresh new build from scratch.

I've a brand new psu and the case is only a few months old too so don't really want to do that. If we it's worth nothing I don't mind, I'll offer it for free. Can sell the ram and the monitor for a few quid I suppose.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good solid 1440p 144hz monitor? Looking to order one tomorrow, I had gsync in my head but realistically when I think about it, it's not really that important. I have my eye on the Dell S2716DG but reviews are just OK. Trying to keep it around the €500 mark if possible.

I have the pg278q and love it, got mine off adverts for around that price, I'm sure the new price must be low now that the 279 is available

It's remained somewhat high. A quick look on geizhals revealed very little other than the dell around that price. I highly doubt you want to buy into the Acer XB270HU lottery. The other option without G-Sync was the XL2730Z from BenQ. Highly regarded but expensive for a non-gsync or freesync product.

There is a guy out near me selling one of those acers secondhand on adverts.

    http://touch.adverts.ie/monitors/acer-27-inch-xb270hu-v2-predator-nvidia-g-sync-ips-1440p-144hz-monitor/10583958

Looks decent. Was looking for a 1440p screen, more for work than gaming though, so the premium for 144hz and g-sync is pushing outside my budget. Would also need more connectivity than just display port.

You get the benefit of checking for all the usual problems before buying though, dead/stuck pixels, backlight bleed etc.

I'm thinking of getting one of these Acer's. Could you tell me why it's a lottery please?

This specific model seemed to be plagued with defects from backlight bleed, excessive IPS glow, dead pixels, ULMB not working as advertised.
They released a version 2 which cleared up a lot of these issues it seems. They also have a new version, the XB271HU which also seems to be better. If you can get it second hand with a chance to view before purchasing, that does sound like a really nice deal. They were good monitors if you managed to get a good one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I went for the TN version of the XB270, the XB270HUD the IPS one was a good chunk more expensive and I really didn't want to go over €500 for the monitor.

The ROG's unfortunately just a bit too pricey for me. Thanks guys for the suggestions.

Now to make do with my spare 24" monitor until the new one arrives. And I planned starting Doom tonight...:(

The Benq XL2730Z is free sync!

Had a minor issue with settings not saving, but solved with help from on here!

I'm very happy with quality (zero pixel defects)! smoothness & colours (again needed to research settings ootb colour was a bit meh) are good!

Don't want to oversell as am not an expert, and have never seen it side by side with gsync or IPS panels, but reviews are good and I'm happy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,307 ✭✭✭Xenoronin

I noted that after I posted. Was looking through the monitors on overclockers and it surprised me.

I have the Benq XL2730Z as well and I am very happy with it.

I have not had a gsync to compare it to but my old monitor was ips and I will take faster response and higher hz over color.
Ofc an IPS freesync would be lovely but the cost at the moment leaves them harder to justify.

Good luck with with it Terror and for the love of God and your retina's turn down the brightness when you take it out of the box , way way way down. Or wear sunglasses.

I've been thinking of getting a monitor myself over the last few days. It will either be 24" or 27" but what else should I look for? Is there anything else that should be a vital spec at this stage i.e. 144Hz, Freesync, 1440p?

    Depends on what you value.

24" for close to the screen gaming. More pixels per inch (PPI). Takes up less room.

27" if you you watch a lot of media and/or if you sit a bit further back or just like a larger image overall.

120-144Hz for smooth, responsive gameplay. Proper control configurations like mouse sensitivity compliment this a lot. High Hz also rarely tear naturally so you can disable v-sync which makes it yet even more responsive and smooth. Even moving your cursor and windows around will be strikingly more smooth.

    >1080p for crisp image, finer details noticable in the distance. More resolution real-estate means more desktop for you to utilise in general activities. Higher resolutions need less post-processing anti-aliasing as jaggies naturally reduce. Comparable to the benefits how tearing natrually reduces on high Hz.

I personally went for a BenQ's XL2720T - 1080p 27" 120Hz. I loathe v-sync now :P Combined with lightboost the image is just ludicrously smooth. Like looking through a window to real life. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get this effect working on linux. Nvidia refuses to release drivers with the proper 3D support or even just outright let people configure 3D on any platform in detail. Proprietary nonsense. There is some way to get it working on linux but I can't understand the instructions and they require having a whole other computer with an nvidia card available.

As for the g/free syncs. I've no interest. They're to prevent tearing with none of the downsides of v-sync (which is input-delay) but I already have a solution to that. Disable v-sync. Let the game blast off at 200fps. I still get no tearing. Also I've read some things a while ago when syncs were the hot topic. People were saying there's still some input delay from it... which is pretty rediculous given how much they increase the price of a monitor. I haven't been keeping up with any advances in this tech, though. Anyone got benchmarks on em'?

All the recent threads and talk about monitors has me hankering for an upgrade. It would mainly be for productivity as opposed to gaming, thinking either 2560 x 1440 27" or a 3440 x 1440 34".

Just wondering if any body could provide any feedback on these, especially if ye have used both? The extra real estate of the ultra wide worth the premium? Can you drive the ultra wide over HDMI on Intel laptop graphics, even with reduced refresh rate?
    Any other considerations?

I do a fair bit if GIS, Mapping and a bit if CAD work, along with a lot if large excel sheets, being able to see more rows and columns at the same time actually makes quite the difference! Lots if data processing and calcs.

I do game a bit, not that much anymore though. Would anything be playable with a hd7970 on mediumish settings?

I will give my opinion on both of these. For productivity the 34" is miles ahead. Since I've switched to a 34" ultra wide, I would never go back.
I work from home two days a week and its so much easier being able to fit the equivalent of my two monitors in work on this screen so its easier working from home than in the office.

Also, I would say you will really struggle with a 7970 on a lot of the newer titles. A lot of optimized games like BF4 should run fine on it at high.

Cheers deceit, which make/model did you go for? Did you get one of the curved ones?

Roughly 50% of the performance of the 1080 for $199 they're claiming.

The presentation is a bit confused tbh. Not sure what he's on about 51% utilisation at the same frame rate for 2x 480 vs 90 odd% for a 1080 at 59FPS.

Did they actually say that, or is that just based on the AotS figures?

Slides on the AotS figures. 2X RX 480s = 1080 performance.

    But the 2x RX480 is at 51% - Hmmm.

Thought so. So we really don't have any idea of the performance then.

Of course we don't - it's a manufacturer using their own best cases.
