what is the largest country, in terms of size, in Europe

    We were having a debate on this issue recently, is it the Ukraine, is it Denmark (ie Denmark/Greenland) or Russia? I vote for the Ukraine!

    Greenland doesn't count towards Europe, else Denmark would be the biggest country.

    But will it remain Europe's largest country if Russia succeeds in legitimising it's annexation of the Crimea, Donetsk and Lujansk regions? I reckon France will edge it into second place by a few 1000 sq km if it comes to pass.

    1 | Ukraine | 233032 mi^2 |
    2 | France | 212935 mi^2 |
    3 | Spain | 195124 mi^2 |
    4 | Sweden | 173860 mi^2 |
    5 | Germany | 137847 mi^2 |

    Crimea has 10,425 mi²
    Luhansk 10,302 mi²
    donetsk 10,267 mi²

    but those are of the regions, no idea how big the area of the separatist really is.

    What about the argument that its Denmark, as Denmark has Greenland and Denmark + Greenland would be the biggest?

    Greenland is part of Northamerica. If this counts we have to add Australia, NZ to UK territory.

    Complex answer. Geographically Greenland is in North America. Politically gained home rule 1979. Denmark retains defense & foreign affairs. Part of European Economic Community until 1985. Left EEC to avoid fishing regulations.
