Today I had the pleasure of getting x4 new Continental tyres fitted. Always a good feeling having fresh rubber under your feet. I took a pic of one of my old tyres, I reckon it could still do a bit more. It served me well over 89,000km.

What brand / model was the old tyre? Looks in perfect condition for a 89k km tyre!

They are Hankook Ventus Prime 2 iirc. 89k from new, so were factory issue from Kia. Admittedly I do do a lot of motorway driving, but I also have my fair share of b roads to get to the motorway.

Very nice! I wouldn't have expected those Hankooks to last that long but for the price they cost it's a very good outcome

Some difference, the father had those on his one new. He's on about 44k and needing his third set. Mainly town driving though.

Jeez, that is a big difference alright. Just goes to show how much tyre wear really is based on the individual driving habits.

^^ Interesting, i'm looking to get the exact same kit for my 740. eBay job was it? I'm weary of the brands of filter/sump, more even more so of the fluid. Hard enough to come by the genuine ZF kits.
I use Meyle for suspension, but who makes their fluid?

Its zf fluid rebranded. The proper atf plus 5 speed stuff is not fully synthetic. Bmw rebrand it also.

Two rear lower control arm bushings.

    384534.jpg

Original parts from the UK, nigh on half the price compared to here with the local main dealers Paddy Tax(™)

And over the winter I've built up my arsenal against the dreaded tinworm.

    384535.jpg

Got that locally as the distributors here give good value for money so I always try to reward that. Will attack the undercarriage over the summer bit by bit. Have to do it in my driveway so will take a few goes. All very minor surface stuff now. Been much worse over the last few years since the local councils decided to start salting rather than gritting the roads. If I leave it, or don't further protect I'll be screwed. Found the Bilt Hamber stuff to be really good and better than anything else I've used. At this stage the inner spaces of my car have more wax than a candle. :D

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

Today I got this mainly for the 1/2'' to 3/8'' conversion piece. As my 170 piece halfords set has a lot of 3/8'' sockets so this converter means I can use them with my 1/2" torque wrench etc.

Good saving! I remember when they were well above 500 and not a discount to be seen.
I suppose seeing as it doesn't fit the newer ford stuff, it would bring the price down.

Thanks to the waterford bus for his parting gift, a lovely little chip on my windscreen..

That kit works well just make sure you screw in the centre piece very lightly. If there are lines extending from the crack you need to get a tiny drill bit and drill the ends of them so they stop spreading. If you don't do this you will extend the crack further when you screw in the centre piece.

Are you saying you want him to drill holes in his windscreen

Yes, you drill a tiny point on each little line to stop it from spreading.

Each of those lines extending from the crack will get bigger and bigger from vibrations and pressure.

I'm with you in theory, that's what you do if you have a crack in a bumper but never heard of that being done on a windscreen. The thought of it makes me shiver :o

You don't drill a hole in the windshield, just a tiny point with the tiniest drill bit you can get :pac:

a friend of mine used to do the windscreen repair business and he did similar when repairing mine. Drilled tiny holes into the windscreen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,657 ✭✭✭CIP4

I can see the logic and if you have a small enough bit it should be fine. You'd just want to make sure you have the hammer action on the drill switched off before you start :pac:

You said drill holes in the windscreen. the hell else am I supposed to think  :pac:

What if the crack is the whole way through?

Windscreens come in 3 layers - glass, plastic, glass. The middle section (plastic) never cracks. If you happened to have a crack on both glass layers you would drill on both sides of the windshield. Again, it's only a small bump not even a millimetre in depth.

There I was still beLIEving something I was told years ago that a windscreen was a big piece of laminated glass :pac:

Well that's exactly what laminated glass is - 2 pieces of glass held together by an inside layer :D

If you ever see a windscreen taken out of a car, you can actually see all 3 layers.
