Vintage is right actually, it will restart like that.
It'll also restart if, for example, you crank up the air con / heating... anything that would use battery resources basically.

I have had it restart for the Aircon needing to crank up and similar, that's true. Just never tried to play with the steering while stopped so I'll need to check that out now from my own personal curiosity. :P

I can confirm my car does not restart when the wheel is moved, or attempted to be moved from when start/stop is active and has kick in...

Tried it with auto hold both on and off and also with the parking brake then on and off... Still nothing until I depressed the clutch.

Interesting. Maybe only DSG cars do it. I can't quite recall if my manual GTI did it either.

My manual golf won't restart by moving the wheel. As mentioned turning up the AC will start the car or turning the heated seats up to full power.

Would make sense due to the lack of clutch on the DSG to prompt it to come back to life.

My apologies my manual Golf will restart if you turn the steering wheel. I had a lone of a Seat Leon which wouldn't restart if you moved the wheel, but would if you stamped on the brake.

    Top man!

I could only find American prices which translated to approx the same as the price quoted.

How much do I owe you for the finder's fee ;)

Can I ask you guys for some recommendations on who you are using for insurance? I got a nasty surprise when I got my renewal, they want €850 up from €490 last year on my diesel scirocco. Only difference being I have switched from the scirocco to the GTI. I'm very low risk, 33, no penalty points, full ncb, full licence both since I was 17. I did a few online quotes and they are all coming in over €1k. I had a few GTIs in my early 20s and I never had to pay anywhere near that.

Insurance has gone up across the board, sometime up to 100% increase.

Mine was about €550 on the R with Chill last August. I expect I'm in for a shock at renewal time.

It's definately gone up across the board but I would find a 100% increase very hard to take.

I must admit I was freaking out a little bit when waiting for my renewal to come. When it eventually did come I was very pleasantly surprised at €320, so much so that I got wifey to check it over just in case I was having a "Specsavers" moment.

I am with Aviva, I checked their online quote system before the renewal came and it was closer to €600, a few others I checked were also that much and more.

Mine came in yesterday at €618, was €619. I'm with Zurich
Now I did go from a 2.0TDi Passat to a Golf (1.4TSi). Was expecting to pay more considering the new car is more expensive and powerful.

How they come up with the numbers baffles me, but from my own experience, it actually seems that the newer the car, the cheaper the quote.

For example, the MK7 Golf is in a much lower insurance grade than previous generations of the Golf, largely due to the radar collision detection thingy... i.e. you are less likely (in theory) to be involved in a rear-ending accident.

When I went from the GTI to the R, my premium didn't change at all.

New 300 bhp golf was cheaper than a 2005 1.9 diesel skoda estate. I wasn't arguing with them about it.

I saved €650 on my insurance with one phone call! Pays to shop around!! :D

On a non-insurance related topic, I mentioned before that my car was stolen. It has the keyless entry option.

Anyhoo, I had the locks etc changed.

When I went home last night, I ensured my car was locked.

When I came down this morning, the windows to the car were open!!!!

Now, its one of two things

    1) My open button on the fob was pressed somehow in my jeans as I went to bed, which opens the windows and door
    2) the scumbags that knicked the car came back with the keys and they could open the car but not start it.

    Anyone any experience of this?

I'd go with option 1. I've seen people report this type of thing many times across different car makes. All you need do is press and hold the unlock button for a couple of seconds and they'll all open.

Thanks for the replies. I have a few weeks to shop around for better quotes so that's what I will do!

Finally picked the car up this afternoon.

Ended up getting App-Connect activated for €225 so was happy enough with that, even just with a small amount of time playing with it I'm was happy to have got it.

That blue is a lovely colour. Best of luck with the new car.

I'd imagine that a lot of the R owners are quite happy with the news that the R400 has now been cancelled. It's got to good for their future values.

It was never likely to happen and even if it did it'd have been extremely niche.

Went with that colour for something different, have had black for the last 5 years and the Golf before that was wine.

225 euro is a good price for app connect. 100 cheaper than my dealer wanted. Had you mentioned it as part of your order or anything and got a discount or was that just the price? That blue is lovely by the way. Best of luck with your new motor.

I was in the north today and filled with super unleaded for the first. Don't think we are missing much so far. The wife prob didn't appreciate me trying to find if there was a difference but the two little people in baby seats in the back enjoyed it.

€225 is about the cost of the licence key itself so he probably got the labour charge for free.

Extremely niche yes, but as far as I'm aware the car was signed off and just awaiting the production order.
