When do the HR quests kick in?
I mean, I'm miles off but it's nice to have something to look forward to :D
Went through the Basarios and Nercylla last night. I couldn't help myself doing a bit of an ankle-hack-a-thon on the former, but mounted him a few times and it was a lot quicker than my last play through. I remember Nercylla being a lot tougher to kill last time, took me a good few tries. Maybe it's the Charge Blade and Tetsucabra armour, or maybe I'm a better hunter than I used to be but that spindly motherfather was limping from VERY early on and I barely needed any additional supplies on top of the chest freebies. Christ it's fast though...

Looking forward to upgrading my blade - is it worth building a couple of Defenders Blades so I can take the charge blade down a few paths, or do I need to diversify my arsenal a little? If so, What's a good complimentary weapon?

After you do all 5 stars, you will get a 6star urgent quest. After you done that it will open up HR 7 star quests. 6 star quests are kind of pointless and there is not much of them, so it's pretty much a jump from 5 to 7. It finally brings some good challenge. You will be relying on your own prep and items from there. As freebies are timed amd you will spawn at random place.
    My recommendation now is:

Learn maps as you won't have map unless you work your way to starter area to pick it up. I sometimes do, sometimes not, depends if I meet monster first.
Use your trader as much possible and upgrade it as much you can. Start stacking up on:
    Honey
    Thunderbugs
    Sap plants
    Stones
Potions ( just buy 100 when they are on sale half price)

Tetsu armour set is great noob armour, you can stick to it up to HR. It will make it easier for you and as o can see, it already does. Just don't go over board with it, it will be hard to give it up. If you can, build a set that spider monster drops. The one you fought now. Always forget it's name. Its solid armour, gives you ability to see when creature is ready to be traped amd you can easily gem it for +50hp. Its a great armour and will make it give up Tetsu easier.
And yes, gear is helping you now, but at the same time you are now better hunter. Monster hunter franchise is like dark souls. Your skill gets better with each monster you take down. Good job on progress m8.

As for elite blade. Its good idea to have 2, but I would not worry about until you hit HR. It splits in to black guard and other blade that does electrical damage.
Black guard is fantastic weapon and what I use now. No elemental, but it gives stun and has solid Base damage. The only issue I have with it: it's looks. :) I am eye candy whore and I love my shiny. Using high level blade that looks like starter weapon annoys me. But hey, that's just me being prick. :)

Nice. I haven't played this in awhile, a fair few months, I think I just got to hunting the Gore Magala? Not too sure. Fun game. Using Greatsword and dual blades myself. Only HR2 or 3 I think in the gathering hall. I usually just play solo or with one other friend but he's buggered off and jumped onto an MMO. >.>

Do you guys happen to use the MH Ireland FB Group? I haven't really been active on it much and the chat was mostly just the same 5 lads talking it seemed. Didn't want to jump into gathering hall with others just pulling me through it, felt like I'd be missing the experience of learning to hunt at my own pace, yknow? :p

Don't know if I have any of you guys in my list, so what about sharing friend codes, so that if we're online, we can join up, given we (other than ShadowHearth!) are more novice at the game, and can help each other out.

    Mine is:

A great sword hunter, nice. That's one weapon I want to master, but the closest I ever came is switch axe. Fantastic weapon in right hands if you can nail well monsters moves amd timing of your charge.
Online is doubled edge sword. If you mew amd starting, I would not recommend online right away. You get 4 people amd chances are one will be very good. It will make it very easy fight amd you will moss out on learning monster. I feel the reward is not warned to, but it's my little old thing and should not be taken seriously.

I am all down for for online with you guys, just tell me where do I find that code on 3ds. It was ages since I played with friends MH and I did it on wii u.

From the home screen on the 3DS, tap the little face icon at the top, move right one to your 'card', and your friend code is at the bottom. You can add people from there too. Only works if you both add each other though. (Hope they bring in an update that makes it more like the Wii U one, where it's username/Nintendo Network based.)

Thats my code, i added you Starlord.

I am working all day today, but I am off tomorrow. So might have some time to play. This weekend I am going to stag party in North, so won't be playing much.

If anyone else interested to eventually try to playtime online, then post your codes. Even if we won't play much, we can exchange guild cards. They are very handy. You can send out those people on quests, who's guild cards you have from offline gathering Hall.

Hmm might get back into this if others are actively playing again, I made it to the first HR quests and just hit a wall last time, I was only using the insect glaive but might try a charge blade now too

I decided to give the insect glaive a try too, for its handy vault ability more that anything!

When I played online we had one high level fella with insect glave and oh my God, he waswrecking stuff. That vault ability is just awesome.

I would like to play with it, but it is a lot of micro management with it if you want to be good with it. I will give it a go eventually.

Just before work I did urgent quest 1star in gathering Hall. So I am badass HR2 rank hunter lol.
Sow the key quests for 2stars and they look easy enough. Will have no problem advancing to 3 stars. Just need some time now.

I love the IG, yeah it requires a bit of careful management to keep the buffs up but the dmg you can dole out when you combine a mounted attack and then attack while they are still on the ground after the mount when fully buffed is insane

Started doing the level 1 quests in the gathering hall last night. On the one hand they're incredibly easy in that the monsters at this stage are very predictable but christ can they take a beating. Suddenly stamina management is my issue, that and having the physical time to finish the hunt before something in the real world gets in the way. I might leave these till I've upgraded my charge blade a little, or use them later to practice a new weapon. I remember looking into IG last year - is the suped-up Extender bug still the one to go for?

Hmm, I found them very easy and killed monsters very fast. Too fast actually. Then again I wear hr set and rank 4 charge blade.
The only time I actually noticed stamina issues was when I was legging it from S. Magala that thing will beat fecking cardio in to you. :D
I guess just get to HR first and then do gathering hall, or join us online.

On other topic: i did some research and messed around on mh4 app. Looks like 6 star quests moght not be so useless. There are at least 4 charge blades that you can make from monsters that appear there. Problem us that I am not sure how it works. Monsters are generally hr, but they are in low rank 6 stars... I wonder if it has something to do with expeditions that I pretty much completely ignored.
I am at work all day and all I can think of is monster hunter lol. Haven't been addicted to a game in ages.

    Update on 6 stars:

Did a bit more research and looks like they opened up from village quests, but you need to be hr 7 from gathering hall. So it's pretty much useless, because if you are at hr7 you will be on caravan 8, where those monsters appear. So yeah, tl:dr: 6 star qs are useless, ignore.

My day off so I had time to play. :)

    Did a few things:

Did caravan 7 Nercylla quests, maybe 3 times. Killed 7 of the pesky spiders, but got those spikes+. Finally added one more charge blade to my arsenal. Its a poison one witchery good sharpness. So got a bit off choice I. Weapon now. Will needed kill a few again to get sharp claws as you need them to upgrade black guard.

Did two more quests. Killing Hr gypceros and Congalala. Was a bitch, but not as other quest to kill one hr purple gypceros. It actually got some nerd rage out of me!!!! It's poison is lethal. Really need to sort out gold poison armour set. Looking at Nercylla S set again. I loved normal set and new one is better defence, same skills, but adds expert and poison skills. Kind of tempted to look I'm to mats properly and see if there is something rare that I can't get my hands on.

Need those sharpclaws and spike+ from Nerscylla as well to upgrade my stealth glaive+, im working my way through HR1 key quests right now so should have access to the nerscylla missions soon enough.

Not sure what armour to go for next, im currently using a full set of rank 4 Lobster armour which looks ridiculous

Nerscylla has started showing up in my Lowbie expeditions. He's a prick. I slap him around a little, he runs to the furthest node on the map he can. I charge through the map as fast as I can and arrive just in time to see him disappear off up into the sky... and land on the other end of the map. Prick! So I charge back through the map, doffing my devil-face-mask to the Rhenoploses as I pass, and arrive at the far end to be greeted by.... that big spindly fecker headed up to the sky again. PRICK!
And this went on for a good 5 or 6 minutes before he fled. It's not just that he's using me as a tennis ball, it's the patronizing pantomime of looking left, looking right, "oh, no hunters here, I better move on" while I'm frantically pelting across the area. Once, I almost got over to his side of the area, nearly close enough to take a swing before he zoned out. GAAAAAARGH!

I would not waste time on expeditions unless key quests there. I sow people with 250h in high hr level who didnt do any.
I killed so many those dm spiders in LR amd hr at this point. They are annoying die to their mass so high. I might skip this hr armour after all. Not fancy killing another 10. :)

I finally got urgent quest for 7 stars. Some mew monster. Can't wait, hopefully will dig in to it tonight!

Got past the Hermitaur, and embarked on my 7* quests, only to have the emerald congala gas and flame me to death! He really likes to jump on you too, much more so than the previous ones!

Still in my Rathian armour and using Dear Lutemia, might see what the best available armour set is at this stage

As soon as you hit HR you are spoiled for choice. Some fantastics ets there. I went for velocidrome set and g. Jaggy gloves as you can't get full set until hr Basarios. I got lucky and got like +attack pink charm. So I managed attack (L), halved stun. Use defence food then.

I just killed 7 stars urgent and progressed to 8 star quests. One of the quests is 2 hr rathians... Oh boy... That's going to hurt.

Emerald conga was okay, a lot of hp though. Wait for emerald gypceros, now that's one bastard.

Actually Gypceros went right up to in my sh*t list after today. I know I will repeat myself, but Purple Gypceros is a dick. Just the whole monster design is very annoying. Very hard to get openings for it and its just always all over the place.
HR1 Gypceros is piss easy if you are alraedy Hr7++ with caravan.

Going to Northen Ireland for Buddies Stag party tomorrow morning, I think my 3DS stays at home. So my progress will be zero for the rest of the week.

I don't mind playing again at some point! I'll post up my FC in a bit when I start again though! My internets been a bit wonky the last while, and it's been about two months since I played! It'd be good to play with some people! :]

Ah I click out so rarely into the main Nintendo forum that I always completely miss it when a topic pops up about the new Monster Hunter game.

If anyone doesn't remember from the MH3U topic (Hi Shadowhearth!), that was by far my favourite Monster Hunter game. I put a loooooot of time into it. More than I'm willing to admit. I tore through the main game start to "finish" with my beloved Lance, then for general play and messing around, I tried to get my usages of all the other weapons up to equal and respectable levels. By the time my interest in 3U petered out I felt like I was pretty respectably decent with all weapons. Here's my guild card:

    2016-02-29%2022.49.19_zpsk9dtqlzc.jpg

My time in 4U has been a bit different. Rather than solo-ing the whole thing, I've been playing it almost exclusively in two-player, as my new missus likes gaming in general and monster hunter specifically, we played from HR0 to G-Special-Rank together with our Ace Palico assistants joining us.

I think 4U is definitely "The best" Monster hunter game. The weapon balance, new mechanics, new monsters and quality of life stuff is all excellent (Thank Jesus for Item sets). 3U will probably still always be my favourite, but that's a personal thing. I'm not a huge fan of the artificially inflated difficulty of 4U in the form of gigantic monster damage, apex monsters, high level guild quests and the massive focus on farming randomly generated gear. Also it's a shame seeing all the ass MH2 monster padding out the ranks of the game content.

To try to keep this game fresh, I didn't allow myself to use any weapon from 3U until I had "beaten" the game, so I was running CB and IG exclusively until I hit G-special. Then I broadened it out a bit.

    WVW69i9ALc0YENLhiN

Since I obviously don't play ENOUGH MH, myself and the missus also made alts to replay MH3U using alternate weapons, for that character I'm exclusively using gunner weapons and armour.

AND because that was so much fun, and I don't want to level any of my "paired" characters without the missus there, I also made a gunner-only MH4U alt exclusively for solo play on my lunch break at work.

So yeah.... you might say I like theses games....

In fairness, you were my teacher for all monster hunter career. I own you a lot. I am doing my best to give advice here lads from what I learned, but my skill and knowledge not even near your level. At least they brought back online for 3ds. Wii u version was the only way to play online unfortunately.
I loved Mh3, but all underwater and water stuff was my gripe. I hate water related content in Any game. So mh4 with its vertical and mounting emphasis just goes smooth as butter with me and makes it best MH game out of franchise.

I am back last night from stag in North. Completely in bits, but make it worst I got a diesel leak discovered when I came back last night home. So had to drive the morning to Cork for my mechanic. Good news car is back fixed and it was a small job, but I am still not home and had zero rest. My plan today to relax, rest and plat monster hunter went to ****. Hopefully I'll be able to do it tonight after misses goes to sleep.

So yeah, tonight my monster hunter progress should go back on track. :)

That's awesome Shadowhearth. If that's what you think, I'll officially count you among my MH diciples, haha. That brings me up to seven I think?

Monster Hunter is such an incomprehensible mess that you always need someone to show you the ropes. I pretty much solo'd all of MH Freedom Unite on PSP but I didn't have a clue what I was doing: No armour skills, mismatched armour for max defense, no idea how to use any weapon, no idea about the damage or attack formulas or proper item management. I was a spastic mess but I still managed to stumble through it.

But then in MH Tri on the Wii, I had my own mentor I met online, and we'd often just play the two of us (Tri was harder than 3U, very much meant for four players) and he'd be explaining concepts to me as we went (albeit, a bit slowly on our in-game keyboards, no skype back then). This is the point I fell in love with the game and started to get exponentially better. After he had taught me all I could learn, then I started mentoring other people.

Glad to see the cycle continues by you mentoring people now man.

I recently reread that MH3U boards topic, which was a really amazing and pleasant time capsule for me. Great topic. I loved how I started using spoiler tags to try and not ruin monster names and strategies for people earlier in the game than me, and then everybody started using spoiler tags everywhere. We were very conscious of not spoiling any experience in a game that has arguably no plot to spoil.

Yourself and Banjo made me a laugh a lot with your stories of "getting your nipples twisted off" or "going from fearing Arzuros to using him like a Tesco self service checkout for monster parts.

It was funny too that with regard to MH3U, I always just think of myself as the guy with a 100% completed file and a thousand hours of playtime; as if I was born that way. But reading that topic reminded me of all the little struggles I had along the way, and how I got from LR to HR with a random stranger in a starbucks in Dublin, how I struggled in my Volvidon S armour trying to solo Gold Beard Ceadeus for the first time, and how I had to drop my precious Lance for a Longsword to beat the Goddamn Sticky Situation Urgent (Two Brachydioses in the Tundra). All those events were things I long forgot.

I also found this gem of me just being ridiculous and cocky for the sake of humour.
Also I'm hearing lots of rumbling online that the "Cruel King of the Sea" DLC quest is one of the first truly hard quests, with full teams of 4 experienced hunters coming away with failure after failure after failure.

I dunno what it rewards, or why they think it's so hard, but I'm looking forward to solo-ing it later :pac:

I did solo it too. Haha!

For the Charge Blade in general, and for Guard Pointing specificially, I found it very helpful to change the "Special action" in the game menu from being activated by the touch screen, to being activated by the start button.

These gives you easier access to a lot of the lesser used moves on a lot of weapons:
    - Running attack for Lance
    - Pistol whip for Bowguns
    - Kick for Greatsword

But probably the most useful is that it lets you change forms with the chargeblade (which is how you guard point) using a single button press, rather than R+X+A or whatever ridiculous sequence it normally is.

This helps a lot because if you accidentally block by pressing R before the other buttons, your guard point is guaranteed to fail (since you can't GP from a block).

Well, I finally had time to play yesterday. I didn't do much game progress, but I worked a bit on my weapons.

Killed hr Seltas and it drops parts for water based charge blade. Farmed that. Then got all parts for blackguard+. So after this o got one rank5 and few rank4 charge blades. Finally got some diversity when it comes to elemental damage.

On actual game progress I did few hr 8 quests. One of the highlights was pink rathian... Now people already know my love to rathian monster family. Pink rathian actually put me in to nerd rage.
First time I went to fight it, it sent my fainted back to camp in first minutes. Not a single monster ever did that to me. I end rage quite and started again. This time I fainted twice, but still got the bastard. Good news I captured him amd got my very first rathian plate. Bad news is I need to kill at least two more to upgrade dearlutemia... F my life.

Baal: would you be up some times for online or at least to share your guild card? That card would be handy as hell for missions. :)

Any advice for a brand new MH player? Best why to set up from the beginning and stuff like that?

Jesus, solo gunning in MH4U is like being punished for a crime I didn't commit.

I'm having tremendous money difficulties. Probably because I am trying to simultaneously upgrade every LBG, HBG and Bow. I understand that's a little ridiculous, but I'm really desperate for one of the weapons to turn out to be really good.

Like the basic gimmicks of each weapon is:

Bow - Infinite ammo. Very money efficient, but very poor damage unless coatings are used. Even if coatings are used, damage drops massively when you run out, and you will, because all the starting bows are crap.

LBG - Rapid firing ammo. Get 3 or 4 bullets for every single shot fired. Middle ground of money efficiency between Bow and HBG.

HBG - Crouch firing ammo. Fire lots of bullets without ever needing to reload. Most expensive option, but most powerful if you can afford it.

My issue is that 95% of the weapons I've made are crap. None of my LBGs excluding two can rapid fire anything. The two that can only rapid fire slicing shot (which I'm too poor to shoot, insert Chris Rock joke here) or Pellet 1, which isn't powerful enough at this point in the game to be worth it.

I even made the Kut Ku LBG in the hope it could RF fire shots. Can it? No! Can I upgrade it from Rare 1 to Rare 3? Not till High rank. Waste of parts.

All my bows are crap too. I was hoping the Seltas one would be water element at least, but it's just high raw and low affinity. The Kut Ku bow is my only one with a bit of element, but it's stats are really poor, and the only bow I have which can apply power coatings (the most important thing for bows outside of the focus skill) is the Hunters Bow II, which is the Rare 1 bow you start with, upgraded once.

What I find I'm doing most of the time is spending all my money on Normal2 and Pellet2 when the shop is on a half price sale, and then bringing a full compliment of them on every quest with the Tetsu HBG the "Straw Drumcannon" (Minus the 30 Normal2 and 10 Pellet1 every quest seems to put in the blue box, god bless item sets).

I shoot all of those bullets, and often run out before the monster is dead (definitely run out if I'm trying to kill all the monsters on an expedition), and then crouch fire normal 1, because that's the unique property of the Tetsu HBG. It's very very far from optimal gunner damage, but 30 Normal1 shots in a row without reloading is honestly some of the best damage I can do as a poverty gunner.

It can also be suicidal if you're fighting a monster with high damage and low knockback, because you won't get knocked out of siege firing or get any kind of invincibility between hits, you just die really fast.

I just killed the Nerscylla on my file and haven't looked seriously at any of her gear yet. The plot wants me to go for a boat ride, but I don't feel quite ready for that yet.

Killed hr Seltas and it drops parts for water based charge blade. Farmed that.

I really like that Charge Blade. All the Seltas weapons have a lot of natural defense, and the CB for some reason has the most. I use it on some end game quests where I'm more worried about dying than doing elementally appropriate damage. Looks awesome as well.

On actual game progress I did few hr 8 quests. One of the highlights was pink rathian... Now people already know my love to rathian monster family. Pink rathian actually put me in to nerd rage.

I still think Pink Rathian is probably the biggest jump in difficulty from regular monster to subspecies. We definitely talked about this in 3U lol.

I'm afraid not. I'd like to, but since we last played I have moved from Dublin City Centre to Rural Cork. I don't even have internet set up yet, but it looks like when I do get it, it will be satellite or some other nonsense equally unsuited to online gaming.

I could probably hop in a room sometime in the future and give you my guild card, but I have serious doubts my connection will support gameplay.

Although it's entirely possible we've streetpassed at some point without either of us realising. Maybe you have my card already :P

There isn't a best weapon. Try them all and go with whichever one you like the best. They put quests in the game to allow you to use them all versus the Great Jaggi free of charge, so this is a good proving ground.

Don't be shy about checking the in-game manual either. Access it by pressing the home button during play. I guarantee there are more useful buttons for your favourite weapon than the tutorial will tell you about.

For best starting armour, keep playing until you unlock expeditions, then keep doing expeditions until you get a Guild Quest with a Velocidrome. Repeatedly kill this guy until you can make a full set of his armour. This will last you for most of the game.

From what I sow so far, all ranged weapons are ultimate in multilayer and really crap at solo as they are very slow to kill, bad cost efficient too. The way you talk about ranged I feel about charge blade upgrade. You only start getting decent stuff in hr. Until that you struggle and use rank 1-3 and other weapons already rank 4-5. Even now I can build good few rank 5-6 other weapons, but getting it on charge blade is struggle, but at least possible now.

Yeah, pink rathian really got me on my toes. I just killed hr zamtrios and Seltas Queen and it was not as bad. Still good jump in difficulty, but at least I did not felt all fight like: " oh ****, oh ****, oh for **** sake, you damn future handbag from Brown Thomas!!" Rathians pretty much an icon monster for MH series. Weren't they like main monster in 1 or 2?

You are now in Cork lol? And I just moved in with misses in limerick lol. I still work in North Cork though. On some day off or something we could meet up somewhere in Cork, like cafe etc. Just play some MH and drink coffee. :)
Hope you sort out Internet, would be so great to do some online again.
