Yeah it's not a good trait. I always feel pathetic afterwards, I get really paranoid also and keep checking my phone to ensure I haven't pocket dialed the individual who is being bashed.

    Like a spineless rat.

I think the majority of people do it. I absolutely do although I've tried my best to not say anything that I wouldn't say to the person themselves, which I often end up doing.

Even if the majority do it, it is still a bad habit that we could train ourselves out of...it really is a form of assault.
In the worst cases, it can destroy people's lives, careers, mental health. All for the sake of the quick vicarious frisson of stabbing someone in the back. Meh.
We do know when we do it....there is definitely a sense of moral discomfort if one should be tempted into speaking ill of absent people..so why should we keep up a nasty habit? We are in control of our own tongues after all.

I'd personally never be taking it far enough that it would damage someone's career or mental health. I'm talking about having an auld moan about someone who did something annoying in work or about that friend who keeps cancelling plans etc. There's a difference between gossiping or venting about something that annoyed you and being a bully.

Paragraphs please, I'm old & can't find me fooking glasses  :o

    I value your input...
You kept mixing up y and j. Lost track of who was mean to who in what would have been the first paragraph.

You can't win. If you say something behind someone's back you're two faced and backstabbing.
You say it straight to them you're confrontational with a chip on your shoulder.

Thanks. All fixed now. Elemonator could do with sleepy time :o
