Is the contrasting black side skirt standard, or specific to the GTD? Looks well

GTD / GTI have the same unpainted black plastic side skirts.

Never noticed it before. Suits the red.

actually only noticed recently that lip/skirts were colour-coded on the R :)

Part of me was wondering what a white GTI would look like with black wing mirrors and black rims, and of course obligatory black roof.

    Kind of like this :

The irony though - for years people wanted colour-coded mirrors and now we have them as standard, and I want to go back the other way :pac:

I think the black mirrors can work well with certain colours but the black roof is chav-tastic... there's too many RS4 TDI's around my neck of the woods sporting that particular look...

Black mirrors are available as a (no cost I think) option on the R rather than the silver ones.

Decided to order it myself. Got the shipping tracking this morning that says it's currently with the carrier in Lithuania.

Mine stayed at that all along, arrived this morning. Haven't played with it yet so about two weeks to get here but that was including a bank holiday.

Chav - brilliant. Haven't heard that term in ages. The roof is already 50% black with the glass, so I think it would finish it off being fully black. You are right though, so many styling trends that started off on high end motors, are everywhere these days which cheapens the look.

When I was in Berlin recently, I saw mk5 golf with what looked like badly made rear LED mk7 style lights.

Tried it last night and activated a few of the pointless bits - fan speed, mirror dip, refuel quantity (not accurate) and lap timer (ahem...only wanted to try it to see if it worked).

Anyway, seems to be quite a straightforward way of doing the coding. Recognises the car and shows the common ones and it's just hit the button to do it. For the small things alone it's worth picking up.

Most of those things are activated from the factory in the GTI / R. Strange as you say that they deliberately deactivate them for certain models / markets.

This is not on a Golf. There's other bits it can do, I just went on the low hanging fruit on mine. Interface and options are the same for the Golf with the obdeleven dongle.

    Yep I know, it's a VRS...

Does that thing require an Android phone to use it? Have you a link to where you bought it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,086 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

Yeah that's the spot. From reading about its worth springing for the pro version. If a court case doesn't get rid of them I can see them charging well for using it with the normal version.

So pricing new tyres. Car comes with Continental ContiSportContact 5p. Wheels are 19/235/35.

Tyre place here wants 450 for two! I asked what if I supply the tyres, how much for fitting and balance and that's 70 euro!

Openeo sell those two tyres delivered for €326. What should I be expecting for fitment?

Or should I go for something different on the car?

    Cheers

    Android only, thanks Obama Apple

Can get it from here: http://obdeleven.com, I assume that's where Gustavo got it as well.

I feared that it was Android only...

Is it possible to code the mirrors to only fold out when the car is started?

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 was considered the benchmark for a good while until the ContiSportContact 5 came along and took the crown. The Asymmetric 3s were only released a couple of months ago and I haven't seen any comparisons between them yet, but they're what I'm currently running and were pretty cheap when I got them. I paid €10 per tyre for fitting and another €10 total on top to dispose of the old ones.

Could you donate the old tires to your local GAA club? I see hurling clubs using them as part of training with juvenile teams

I'd imagine so. On my Leon FR they were coded to close with the key (rather than holding it) and open when you started it. I didn't do the coding so unfortunately don't know how exactly.

LOL that's how it worked in the early MK7's (my GTI did it that way) and VW changed it as most people wanted it the way it works now :pac:

Not sure if it's possible to code it to do that now though.

Yeah I just called another place and the ContiSports are 370 fitted. €80 is some difference in price. He said €15 to fit them if I supply myself, sounds more like it.

Think I'll go with that. I am sure other tyres would be fine, but it is just in case I decide to move the car on, I would prefer to have all 4 the same.

I paid 150 quid per tyre for 18" version of the same Conti's back in January '15. Are the 19's really that much more expensive?

Incase you ever want to get the real deal, this is the legit cable you'd want, and at 250 dollars, isn't too bad tbh: http://store.ross-tech.com/shop/VCuCAN.html

Or if your pockets are deeper, here's the wireless version which will work on phones, tablets, etc: http://store.ross-tech.com/shop/VCHN.html

Mind saying where that is? Best i was quoted for Contis was 205 each.

Is DCC no longer an option here? I didn't ask as the car was already built when I put the deposit down, but I don't even see it as an option on the website.

Ah it should be. About €1150. The VW configurator is absolute rubbish, so ignore that. This is the best reference for specs: http://www.volkswagen.ie/content/medialib/vwd4/ie/pdf-downloads/product-guides/golf-gti-gtd-product-guide/_jcr_content/renditions/rendition.download_attachment.file/product-guide-golf-a6-gti---gtd_july.pdf

Yikes, glad I didn't ask now :pac:

Anyone that spec'd it says they wouldn't be without it. I suppose after spending over a grand on it a certain amount of placebo effect kicks in :pac:

I've driven a MK7 GTI with it a few times. Honestly didn't notice much difference between the modes. You're coming from a MK5 GTI and if you're reasonably happy with the ride in that car, then the extra damping and refinement on the standard MK7 suspension will be more than enough...

If I can offer a counter point to the Above?

I did spec DCC and do love the extra. I also had it on my previous MK7 also.

I tend to leave the car in Eco mode for most day to day driving (Eco Engine, Soft Suspension, Normal Steering, Coasting Mode). Basically like a big exec, without the big !

Change from say Eco or Comfort, to say Normal is not that pronounced, however moving on to Sport does harden and tighten everything up greatly, and is very pronounced. It affectively offers 2 cars in 1.

Apologies if this has been asked already but has anyone here bought a gti recently on pcp? What sort of deal was achieved and what figures were involved i.e deposit required, subsequent monthly repayments etc. Thanks for all info. ...

I was in with a dealer yesterday and the unofficial word was that the zero per cent rate will be continued through the next quarter to keep sales up for July.
I presume this won't be made official until the end of the month to boost first quarter figures.
Don't know if this is true but it's what I was told.

Thanks for the replies folks. Still slightly over my budget then. I suppose i could look at second hand circa 30 grand mark? I believe there is pcp now on cars less than 3 years old? Speed a white one in s and r motors in donegal so that might be the way for me to get in to a mark 7
