Liftback e11 corolla tested till feb17 and taxed till Aug16 asking 350. Needs a timing belt but these are properly noninterference engines so there's a very good chance there's no head/valve damage, the waterpump isn't driven off the timing belt either so it really should be just a matter of replacing the belt and away ya go.

When I saw this, I expected it to be cheaper.

They're fairly poorly built I believe (no personal experience) and fantastically undesirable for some reason. I wouldn't think that's a crazy good price for one. Golfs and Corollas are the most desirable cars in that class for the general public.

That 307 would want to be near free.

Its done 176K miles and it only needs some bushings. Scrapyards have plenty of 1.4 golfs on half that.

176K is pretty respectable for any car.

Agreed but I think nd wants to buy it to shift on. I'd be expecting to get a good condition one with nct for 750-1000 to be honest.

If you got it for 400ish I wouldn't think it too bad if everything else was OK.

    ah, i have you.

Yeah, tricky to make money as margin would be very tight on it and market limited.

But worth a shot if the car is clean, but at that mileage its unlikely.

Still though, fair fecks to a 1.4 petrol engined french car hitting that mileage.

I think those engines are hardy enough with some maintenance. Head gasket failure does occur but I'm not aware of anything else

I always wonder why sellers dont just fix these small issues and increase the price accordingly?
When it comes to bushes its not even a medium job.

Some people struggle to fill the water bottle, let alone bushes.

I think its just a point you reach where the car owes you nothing, and you want to move on. Any further expenditure is seen as a loss, as its unlikely to be recouped, especially where the overall condition of the car may be less than perfect.

This is where the opportunities lie for turning a few quid. Some of these sellers will often let these cars go for pocket change just to be rid of them.

Be careful though, a lot of these cars are genuinely knocking on the door of the Grim Salvager.

Id agree with you there but I think such a minor job like that could help you shift it quicker. Plus you'd avoid the potential explanation as to why you aren't fixing it. With the accord I gave it what it needed and even when it broke my heart and I decided to flog it on I wanted the new owner to have something that didn't need to go straight to a mechanic. Maybe that's just me though.

i'm thinking that due to the insurance 15 year thing the likes of these will be more popular as older cars become increasingly more expensive to insure. But who knows.

Would need to source cheap gearbox and be handy with DIY to replace suspension arms etc.. along with overhaul brakes and paying VRT

You probably get better irish example for not much more if you looked around

I know the tax is very offputting but imo it looks lovely for very litle money. Not something to make money on.

Well for me it is highly illustrative of how screwed up the used car market is here because of the ridiculous tax setup, when the likes of that can be had for beer-money.

What are they like in the 2.2 diesel?

That really is small change, the seats would nearly be worth the asking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,554 ✭✭✭porsche boy

The 9-3 wasn't as nice a car as the 9-5 IMO. The ball joints on the front & wheel allgnment as well as the brake pipes at the rear and blown exhaust will set you back another 400 or more to get fixed. Then thanks to the 2.2 engine the tax is around 900 for the year and as it's about to go 15 year old the insurance will be high too.
A mechanic with a garage policy is the only person for this... might just go have a look!

NCT out a year but serviced and checked by the garage, low mileage too.

if its checked out and servoced by the garage the they could slap an nct on it if sold, surely an extry 50 lids would not break them to sell it

Could be an option if you rang them.
