Do you listen to podcasts?

So I'm sitting here listening to a podcast from Empire about movies (something I love) and trying to like it. I can't. It's just three people chatting randomly and laughing at their own terrible jokes. And I don't think it's this podcast. I don't think I have the patience to sit through random musings of random people.

But looking through the iTunes store and there are thousands of podcasts on every conceivable topic, so they're obviously popular. Do you listen to any?

Yes, I listen to a few.

The Guardian football weekly is a terrific listen.

Also try "Serial", another quality podcast.

Listen to one on film. Not religiously, just the episodes that interest me.

I listen to one or two, have done so for a few years now and find them to be a source of humour and relaxation.

There's one called "How did this get made?" it's very funny. They discuss how crap some movies are. You can search through the list for the films you have seen. The Con Air one is especially good!

I got recommended 'This American Life' a while back, just to listen to a specific topic. I've been hooked ever since as they can cover the most random of topics. The production and flow of the hour long show is top notch. 'Serial' noted above, is also produced by the same people.

The Second Captains ones are good. But they can get a bit waffley, as they aren't keeping to the same time constraints as live radio.

Ah but it's not really, there's a very different feel to a podcast.

I kind of agree with the OP, in a way. I find a lot of podcasts, are essentially, a couple of guys trying to be funny for an hour but not succeeding.
I actually downloaded an Empire podcast earlier but hadn't got a chance to listen to it yet, was hoping it would be decent. I got fed up of Kermode and Mayo's "Wittertainment".

Some I listen to:

Guardian Football Weekly
BBC World Service Documentary
Arsecast (Irish based Arsenal podcast)
Second Captains
RTE Documentary on One
WTF with Marc Maron - He's kind of a pain in the ass but gets some good guests on.
Serial (Haven't really got into it yet.)
An Irishman Abroad - Regan can grate a bit, and can depend heavily on his guest, but interesting more often than not.

Radiolab has to be my favourite. I find comedy podcasts very, very hard to get into.

Podcasts are like very very amateur radio. I was down the country for the election results and every single two bit radio station had more professionalism than pretty much any podcast.

But podcasts are more interesting. There's a wider range of discussions. So I like them

You're listening to the wrong movie podcast. You want to be listening to Kermode and Mayo, that's genuine awesome entertainment.

Well you're wrong there. Have a listen to some of the better podcasts and come back. Kermode and Mayo, football weekly, serial, second captains etc. All much better than you'd find on ANY Irish radio station - professional or amateur. Granted there are a lot of two-bit podcasters out there too.

The problem is that there are so many radio stations and so many podcasts.. and unless you know exactly what you are looking for, you could end up doing a lucky dip.

For interesting topics, quality and good production, BBC4 podcasts are my favourite.

Kernode and Mayo are pros. Second captains too. BBC and ex RTE.

Maybe I should have qualified the statement.

But my main point was that it's all good. I don't care about the professionalism if the content is ok.

I started listening to "Russell Howard and Jon Richardson Show" from 6 music a few years ago in podcasts - some of it is quite funny and I go back every few years and re-listen to them when I am doing some work sometimes.
I really should get into more podcasts as I can listen while I work.

I like listening to Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast (RHLSTP). He mostly interviews other comedians and actors and asks them questions about whether they'd prefer a hand made from ham or an armpit that dispenses sun cream.

Developer Backstage and Fragmented are the two I listen to most, they are Android focused.

I listen to a few of the newstalk podcasts on soccer and history and science, also the football ramble, Star Wars minute is great if you have a nerd in you, I used to listen to stuff you should know a lot. Great fir when your painting or just going on a walk.

I listen to a few while commuting, but I have to do stuff to them first: I use batch audio processing software (sox) to apply some audio compression (to make them more audible when it's noisy), then speed the whole podcast up by a factor of 2.

I'm more interested in factual and comedy podcasts, and I have little patience for podcasts that consist of one or two people just chatting about whatever they feel like. Good examples include Planet Money, Flash Forward, Welcome to Night Vale, Serial, BBC Friday Night Comedy (News Quiz or Now Show), and Dan Carlin's two podcasts (Common Sense & Hardcore History).

You should also listen to "Stuff you should know" there's 100's of very interesting topics .

Loads. I love podcasts. My current favourites are crime and mystery. Thinking Sideways, The Generation Why, Sword and Scale and a really good Irish one Those Conspiracy Guys.

I listen to PKA every week, it started out as a gaming podcast, however the topics vary from sex humour to serious discussions like politics, etc and it's hardly focused on gaming anymore. They have a distinct sense of humour that most people mightn't enjoy but I think it's great.

Distraction Pieces with Scroobious Pip is a great one. Interviews a mix of actors, musicians and interesting people for the most part. Blindboy from the rubberbandits was in the newest episode and it's well worth checking out, not a typical interview you'd expect from him!
