Replacing a Mac Hard drive - Anyone done it themselves?

Having a couple of issues with a late 2012 (actually bought 2013 from the refurb store).

Has started to crash/freeze & my backup is reporting read errors, so I'm thinking the hard drive may be on the way out. In addition, I have 24GB ram in there & I think it should be a LOT quicker than it is.

    I've watched this video:

And it looks reasonably easy. I currently have a 1GB, would it be possible to put a larger one in there? Any restrictions ?

Go SSD for the ultimate performance enhancement. The mechanics of replacing are exactly the same but have a USB installer ready before you begin.

Was thinking of that but I have an sad in my MacBook and to me the size is more important than the speed.

I get more frustrated running out of space on the MacBook than I do at the speed of the iMac.

Hybrid drive appeals to me greatly. I could stick a 2TB in there I guess. No real point going to 3 or 4 as my backup drives are only 3gb.

Do later model iMacs have to have the original brand hard drive if being replaced ? I seem to remember reading somewhere about them using a heat sensor that was proprietary to the brand the unit shipped with.

You can get pre loaded SSHD on ebay for a good price, just plug and play and away you go
