As a time trial it didn’t work out exactly, and if I'm honest I'm a little disappointed with the time, but as a race I couldn’t be happier with it. Maybe the track is more conducive to time trialling ? Given that you get your quarter mile splits and there is more predictability ?

Is it possible to run exactly on the shortest racing line on the road? Could this account for your time - losing the equivalent of a second a lap because you're not hugging the inside lane every step of the way round like I'm sure you were in ALSAA? Sounds like a feasible explanation to me. You could have lost more than 4 seconds in fact! Roll on the next track TT!

Ah brilliant, pass on my congrats, I saw her speed to the finish and imagined she'd had a good run but didn't get to chat afterwards to get the details!

Cheers RR, I'm delighted with the race, just ever so slightly disappointed with the time because it felt a bit faster. That said the last time I ran that loop and got the same time I thought I was going to lose my lunch at the finish line so there's progress in there somewhere :o:D.

Will you do the next one in 2 weeks ?

Yep I'll give it a go alright.

bit late to this party :D well done! you didn't feel you were gonna loose your lunch? that's definite progress!!

Nice session, well under 6 min mile pace there!

You obviously missed the bird shyte and track measurement discussion on my log. :)

And yes, it's not you, it's bloody cold today. Was just out for some recovery and sorry not to have brought hat and gloves!

BG, that's a really good session. No surprise that you're wrecked, you were really motoring. And yes, it has been bloody freezing the last couple of days. Damn that false spring last weekend!
Will you be able to taper for the relays? I think you can really do some damage to your mile PB (extra bit included) with a little more faster stuff between now and then.

    *blows dust off log*

    Saturday through Tuesday – REST

Flattened with a virus complete with chills, fever, blocked ears, raised HR and general misery on Friday afternoon. Couldn’t move off the couch for the rest of the weekend, but was, of course, sufficiently recovered in time for work on Monday . Visited the doc on Monday afternoon who ordered a complete rest from exercise for a week . Negotiations ensued and I got the week off backdated to Friday and permission to do Pilates :D.

    Wednesday – S&C

Pilates. Never have I looked forward to Pilates so much. I was rubbish, and the instructor even commented on how rubbish I was, but I couldn’t care less – I got to exercise.

    TOTAL WEEKLY MILES: 10.2

Today would have been a rest day anyway and while I’m a lot better, I’m still not 100% so the doc was right to enforce a ban. I think he has seen enough of me this winter to suggest that I don’t take enough time to recover from bugs and doses, therefore prolonging the recovery and leaving myself open to everything BG Jr brings home from Montessori. Should be good for a few easy miles tomorrow evening and will reassess then.

I will thanks, easy run today to test the waters but I'm pretty much there I think in terms of recovery.

Was a fun night, great to see you and MrsKennyG too.

    Thursday – REST

Another rest day to give the lurgy the boot once and for all. Headed out for the evening to the Raheny Shamrocks AC annual table quiz. There were questions, there was wine, more questions and more wine. And so it went. My only contributions to the scoresheet were from my specialist subjects of weightlifting :confused: and pop music :pac::pac:. Luckily my teammates are a lot smarter and we didn’t disgrace ourselves. A great night out amongst a few familiar faces from boards and the host club. Definitely on the calendar for next year (if they let us back in ;)).

    Friday – Easy

Got out for a test run around lunchtime, complying precisely with the doc’s 7 x 24 hour rest order ;). The watch was still in devil units after last Friday’s session so I’d no idea what pace I was going. Lovely day for a run, although it could have been hailstoning and blowing gale force winds and I probably wouldn’t have cared. A ‘good to be alive and happy to be well again’ run. Pace translated into 9:23 min/miles after the fact which isn’t too bad after a week off.
    • 4.1 miles @ 9:23 (grass)

I’ll probably keep it easy enough for this week, maybe do the mile on Wednesday if I’m feeling good. Then I think I’ll repeat one or two of the earlier weeks of the programme rather than jump back in where I was because I think the intensity of the sessions, while I’m enjoying it a lot, is a lot more than I’m used to. This will mean finding a new target event but I’m thinking the BHAA Trinity Track events in June might be good to aim for. I loved these last year and hopefully they’ll go ahead this year. The alternative might be to pick a 1500m at one of the Graded Meets but that would be the scarier option .

    Saturday - Easy

Not following a plan this week – just easy running to get back on track after the lurgy. Headed to Wicklow to cheer a friend who was doing a 100 mile (100 MILE ) race which started on Friday evening. By the time I got there on Saturday morning she was at 85 miles having run through the night in the rain, wind, darkness and cold. I joined her for the last lap and couldn’t get over how upbeat and positive she was. I get cranky if I lose a few hours sleep, I’d probably be jailed or committed (or both) if I had to run without sleep. Ultrarunners are a different breed altogether. She even managed a sprint finish and won the race in just over 20 hours.
    • 10 miles (road)

    Sunday

Busy day, including Junior parkrun and no I don't count it as part of my mileage , meant I only had time for a short run so stayed local and did a few loops of the park.
    • 3 miles @ 8:36 (path, grass)

    Monday

Took advantage of the day off work to go a bit further afield and did an inside loop of St.Anne’s then a lap of the masters XC course (complete with log jump), and back to the Red Stables where I ate at least all the calories I had just burned off .

    Tuesday - Easy

A few loops of the local park in the evening. In the daylight!
    • 3 miles @ 9:06 (grass, path)

    Wednesday – S&C, Speed

Level 2 Pilates. Good class which involved some work on a ‘foot corrector’. Apparently the noisier your apparatus the worse your imbalances. Mine sounded like a bag of cats .

I was in two minds all day about whether to attempt the mile in Raheny tonight but I figured after the week off followed by a week of just easy miles (and a weekend full of chocolate), I’d just be asking to be disappointed. So I did a session from next week’s plan instead and I may do the BHAA 2 miler in St. Anne’s on Saturday.

Session was 4 x 800m @ 5K pace with 2 mins rec. I did this along the promenade: 1 & 3 were into the wind and 2 & 4 were wind assisted. Target pace was 6:52-6:58 min/mile. Happy enough with the results given it’s on grass and the wind was stronger than I’d anticipated. Fabulous evening out, with daylight until almost 8:30pm.

    Paces 4 x 800m (6:56, 6:52, 7:05*, 6:39)

*this involved a bit of a detour around a dog and its owner who seemed set on throwing a ball for the dog which ensured he raced across my path more than once.

    TOTAL WEEKLY MILES: 31.9

Rest day tomorrow, so mileage table updated:

    Month 2016 2015 2014 2013
    January 141 101 86 0
    February 134 109 75 0

    Friday – S&C, Easy

Level 1 Pilates class, definitely feeling an improvement with the basics. I suppose I’d want to be at this stage .

Then up to St. Anne’s for a trail loop plus a recce of tomorrow’s 2 miler. Here’s hoping it’s not as windy in the morning! A few half-hearted strides thrown in at the end.
    • 5.3 miles @ 8:43 (trail, path)

    Saturday – BHAA 2 mile, S&C

Forecast didn’t look great for this but it actually turned out perfectly for racing. A bit drizzly, but not freezing and little or no wind. I didn’t really get a proper warm up done as planned – about a mile including some strides and that was it. Lined up a row or two back and the loose plan was to go out XC style and hang on. The first half a mile or so was gently downhill on the avenue and I knew from where I was in the field that I had gone out quicker than usual but I was feeling ok so held steady. I was passed by a few runners just as we turned off the avenue which was fine, I’d expected that and recognised them as being faster than me. The course moved on to the parkrun route and I think it definitely helped to be familiar with it. Passed the 1 mile marker just after the first parkrun turn, and actually now that I’m thinking about it, the site of my collision last year with Digby The Biggest Dog in the World . The watch showed 6:33 pace but hadn’t beeped at that point. That was the last time I looked at the watch . I had calculated I’d be on for a PB if I could hold that pace, so I gave myself a good talking to and started to dig deep. Past the tennis courts and then a right turn up along the pitches, up ‘Everest’, and then decided to hang on to the back of a couple of runners who had come up alongside me. This really helped as I was getting a bit comfortable where I was behind someone who was obviously slowing down. So I passed her out and started to dig deeper with 800m to go. I could see the lead runners who had turned left up ahead and got a boost from seeing several clubmates in the top ten. 400m to go and it was starting to hurt, but there was loads of support at the final turn, and then about 300m to go up that slight drag on the avenue towards the main gate on Sybill Hill road. Felt I was still running well but had nothing in the legs for a sprint finish and was pipped by someone close to the line. Watch said 13:17.x but I got a second back on the official time of 13:16 which is 12 seconds faster than my previous PB :D. Also the first 16 finishers got a lovely commemorative plaque and I got one by the skin of my teeth!

Delighted with the race and the result. Operation HTFU is starting to pay off. But the best bit about today, and any races I’ve done in the last couple of months, is that there hasn’t been a peep out of the FlAbs (the severe and lingering ab pain I was getting during races). I’m not 100% sure what this is down to (neither was the €200+ consultant ) but I’ll keep doing what I’m doing and hope that it’s a thing of the past.

Didn’t do much of a cool down either, tut tut, as was watching the 4 mile race, cheering for Red Runner amongst others. Aquinn and annapr had made it back from parkrun (volunteering and race-prepping respectively) in time for the 4 miler so a quick catch up then indoors for coffee and brack, nom.
    • 3.4 miles incl. 2 mile race (13:16, PB )

Had made a promise to myself to go to the gym after the race (hadn’t been there in 3 weeks thanks to the lurgy and lack of time) so I trudged there after delaying as long as possible at the race afters. Actually wasn’t that bad once I got in there and I made it through the programme in about an hour. Mix of squats, lunges, core and single leg stuff. Tired now but in a good way rather than a pre-lurgy way. Busy for most of tomorrow with BG Jr activities but hopefully will get out for a nice long hilly run in the evening. Best of luck to all doing the Dunboyne 4, looking forward to the race reports!
