    Nonoperational,
if you have put in a very small deposit you e.g. 10% you may actually find you are in negative equity on the car or have no equity in it.
However you may find with VW desperate enough for sales and now offering 0% finance it could be a good time to get an R. You may be pleasantly surprised what the monthly cost would be
I actually can't think when there will be a cheaper time to buy one of these..

Anyone else with a Manual GTI notice how long 3rd gear is? Try to hit redline in it and the bloody thing just keeps going! :D

Anybody remember the pcp / deposit rates for the r? calculator on the site doesn't seem to be working.
Very tempted changing from the m3 this year - was planning on an e92 but 30k seems mad for another 10 year old car - need to test drive one of these :)

It was 1.9% but I believe 0% is available now depending on your deposit size.

PCP is at 0%...ends at the end of the month.

The zero percent is up to orders befor the end of March. They seem to have pulled the pcp calculator from the website.
The radio ads mention 10 per cent deposit but don't make clear if this gives the zero rate. I think another poster said you have to put more than this in to get it but VW don't make this obvious.

No I haven't tried adjusting the beam.

With the dynamic lights it seems like there is little difference between low and high beam, when the car switches to high the mask system seems to just uncover part of the bulb. It doesn't get any brighter.

Have a look at this thread. Looks like a simple way to improve output significantly. I'm assuming it would be very similar doing the same to a Golf as I haven't checked the bulb types.

When I was thinking of moving from gti to R the VW sales manager said a 3 year change R to R would he reckons be 14/15k.
Not a lot really compared to most cars in this price bracket.

That's very good, three year old car only loosing about 30-35% of its value, and that value is on trade in, not private sale. Cheap motoring I tell ya :)

I think I have carplay on the car, just need to get it activated??

Do you think its worth doing?

I have the Discovery pro, and the Car Play comes as standard with that.

I do find, im using the Google maps, way more that the VW navigation as it has the traffic updates displayed, and it just looks better.

The Podcasts is another option that I find im using, play, but you would get that with a Bluetooth connection anyway.

The voice recognition on the texting is also a nice feature, both for sending and reading out received texts.

If there is a small charge for the car play then go ahead, but its mostly a "nice to have" rather that essential.

You do need an official apple charge cable to use with the Car Play, I've tried several generic ones and none work.

My 2c worth on the Gti.

I got mine back in August 2015, and have just 4K miles on it, having previously owned a White mk7 Gti.

    Spec-
    Carbon Grey
    DSG
    Discovery Pro
    Pano Roof
    DCC

I did test drive an R back in early 2015 and was very impressed. However we moved house last year which diluted the car budget somewhat.

I don't think I would have specked anything else, bar the keyless entry. I do love the carbon Grey, and when clean, polished and under garage lights the car looks great.

    uz0pFEMb.jpg

Also the DSG is a success so far, I mostly just leave the car in full automatic, as most of my driving is short city trips. Mpg hovering around 27mpg, which is disappointing but probably done to the my driving.

Discovery Pro, I had in my previous golf, but with the technology pack upgrade, you now also get the Car Play and Iphone integration... See my post above for that. Pano roof, great in the summer, but don't use it much other that that. Lastly DCC, I do like messing with the suspension and steering setups, and find I leave the car in comfort mostly (possibly im getting old ?).

    Generally-
I do love the car, probably the best car I have owned (this is my 4th Gti in 10 years).
Also my to sons are at an age where a car like that confers a certain amount of kudos.

I probably would buy another one but would we be close to a Mk 8 by then? I think you'd be looking at a hit of around 7k per year.

Good read, unreal pics!! Maybe the future isnt as bleak as we thought!!

Id love a drive in one of them! How does it sound? I guess GTIs were never the loudest in comparison to OPCs etc! Does it have the piped in engine sound?

Yeah, it does have piped in sound but it's not over done by any means. It's a quiet car TBH but it sort of suits it.

Apparently VW will be putting in the slightly more powerful hybrid system from the passat gte into the facelifted golf gte later in the year.

I'd have to check, but almost certain it's the same system in both but the Passat has either more batteries or larger capacity batteries.

Saw it on Autobild website which has details of the golf facelift.
Apparently will make 218 hp instead of 204 hp currently

Picked this up yesterday, like many here I was really really tempted by the "R" but in all practicality even the GTI probably has 100 (or more) horsepower more than I will use on a regular basis.

A 1.2 would probably have done me but these are such nice cars I couldnt do it.

Its a really smashing car and I am very pleased. I have one small observation that maybe someone here has some comments / experience with. Depending on the road surface, the road noise is a little more than I had expected, very much a first world problem and not bad enough to really make an issue about.

I have seen some car enthusiasts go to extreme lengths insulating their cars and I dont want to do that, but I was wondering if adding extra rubber matts to the floor and a load liner to the boot would help / make any difference. Or if anyone has any other tips or tricks I am all ears - As mentioned above, I dont want to go doing any major / permanent alterations to the car.

Most road noise is down to the tyres? Bridgestone Potenza's fitted to it I take it? They're one of the worst for it!

You could try a rubber boot liner but I'd be doubtful if it'd help much.

Just replaced the Bridgestones on the R last week with pirellis and a noticeable
    difference in road noise.

Good guess on the tyre make - I dont think I have the heart to go changing out brand new tyres... For future reference, what are better tyres?

I will pick up a boot liner on Monday and give it a try, I guess it wont hurt anyway. Thanks Joe.

There's an official VW liner for the boot, I have it myself, it's about €50 in the dealers. Nice job but it's more of a foam like material than rubber.

I've Continental's on the R. They seem to be rated very highly. I'd agree it'd be mental to swap off brand new tyres tbh.

Anyone get carnet or app connect working?
Dealer doesn't think activation is available yet.
Can't register for carnet as vw site keeps reporting an error.
    Not impressed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

I believe the carnet activation portal is down at the min.

App-connect is a separate thing from carnet. Carnet is standard where as app connect is an option that enables Android Auto or Apple Carplay to work with the head unit. If your headunit says app-connect and then mentions getting it activated at your retailer, you are talking about €300 to get it done.

It looks good, but I am not sure I would put €300 to it.

I also replaced front bridgestone tyres with pirelli and have noticed some improvement in road noise too.Grip is better than I remember also.

What sort of mileage are you guys getting out of the Bridgestones on the GTi/R?

I got about 20k Kms on the fronts in the GTI. There was still probably another 20k left on the rears.
