News out today that he is suffering from incurable cancer, so sadly he may not be long for this world.

For those of us growing up in the 80s he was an entertainment legend.
His TV show was appointment viewing on Saturday evening (I think it was Saturday evening).

He was on The Late Late Show once and it was one of the very rate occasions for the period that a LLS segment had to be pre recorded as Daniels was not available in the regular Friday night slot.

Yeah, read that this morning. I had one of his magic sets as a kid and watched him and Tommy Cooper (reruns). Real shame.

I actually saw an ad recently for a show he was performing in a local theatre here. . .

    And I've just found a link http://www.brooksidetheatre.com/pauldaniels.htm

    Ah, that's very sad

Heard it on the BBC this afternoon. The poor man; it sounds like a horrible disease to go through. :(

I was surprised to hear that he is the same age as the late Terry Wogan at 77 years old.

Already three legends have died of cancer in 2016 - and now they're about to be joined by a fourth... :(:(:(:(

As well as being good at tricks, Paul was also good at hosting game shows:

Every Second Counts was, of course, the best-known and most successful of the three - although Odd One Out arguably had the best title sequence, while Wipeout probably had the best music.

    But they were all brilliant.

I don't remember him hosting game shows but I grew up in RTE land in the 80s so maybe not surprising. He was always a treat to see on the telly thugh. Not only is he a great magician but he has the personality to really pull off a great act. It's a pity that a guy who has provided so much fun and entertainment to others over the years can't see out his final days in peace. HIs current illness must be very distressing for him and his family.

I was looking at a booklet this morning for coming attractions in Glór, Ennis and I thought "Paul Daniels in May? There's a blast from the past! That will be a good night out for the whole family" I hadn't heard the news about him being ill and cancelling the tour.
This has been a really ****e year so far. I wish him well. A really great showman.

Edit: I see from theteal's post above that the Brookside Theatre show has been rescheduled for October. Perhaps there is some optimism that treatment will help?

According to the BBC, there will be no more treatment, and Daniels is now comfortable at home.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Last month we were asking the same question about 69: Bowie, Rickman, and more. Ages in that range are not equally distributed: people currently 69 were born just after WW2, and people of 77 born just before.

I've great memories of watching his TV show with my Dad. And when he did a show in the Olympia (1986? 1987?) we went along. One of my favourite memories from my childhood.

    Very sad.

Oh, no... Only yesterday I mentioned him to my mother. I saw him live in Galway - it was the late 90s and even at that stage, he was a blast from the past, but what a great entertainer.

    RIP

I never liked him as a kid; he just came across as snide and insincere plus that whole 'hocus pocus' style of magic was already dating badly in the 80s.
