I ordered a 1.6 highline in Nov with Xenon and lane assist expecting to get the dynamic light assist.
Dec the dealer contacted me to say the car can't be configured with xenon and lane assist and would have to drop one of them.
I dropped the lane assist with the result no dynamic light assist just light assist (bendy lights and high beam assist)
Delivery delayed by 4 weeks, I wasn't a happy bunny at all.

Yep, dynamic light lane assist require xenons. The halogens are totally incompatible with that system. You should have come on here sooner and asked...!
I think all you will get is "light assist", which just auto flicks between high and dipped beam depending on oncoming traffic. That's standard anyway in the tech pack so don't pay extra for it.

I'm getting the xenon, but without the lane assist, you get light assist not dynamic light assist.

How does that work when following a car? I assume it just leaves the high beam off? How does it know?

    It's black magic.
There's a camera behind the rear view mirror see the lights of cars.
Light assist will turn off the high beam
Dynamic light assist leaves on the high beam and "shades" the light from the other cars

A camera up at the base of the rear view mirror. Monitors the ambient light and can tell when there is either a car coming towards yo, or a car in front due to their lights and it can also tell when you're in a built up area with lighting and keeps them off there too.

Only issues is it doesn't quite work too well on the small and windy roads here, as I've come up against an oncoming car once or twice, and as they appear quite quickly from behind a bend the assist hasn't reacted quick enough, which is slightly embarrassing. For this reason, I generally leave it turned off and to be honest the low beam Xenon's are pretty much good enough as is!

Here's a good video showing the dynamic light assist

    Same as vintagevrs....snap lol

Camera behind the rear view mirror looks at road situation ahead and can move the light pattern to keep a partial full beam on and not blind on coming drivers. Would love to know how well it works.

I find the high beam assist cocks up plenty.

Dealer talked me out of the xenons when I was placing my order last November. Wish I had gone for them.
I just have the standard light assist, haven't really had a chance to use it as most of my driving is in the city.

Doubt I'll make it to any meet unless I happen to be in dublin some weekend anyway. How about cars and coffee next month?

Had adaptive xenon on my 10 year old bmw I'm trading. I wouldn't buy a car again without xenon or LED's

After following this thread for the last year or so, I'm on the verge of buying a new GTI PP 3 door. Spec: manual, alcantara/cloth, DCC, sunroof, Dynaudio and tech pack.

Monty, out if interest did you consider an R? I would imagine your kitted out gti pp is the same price. (That's not a loaded question implying you should have went for an R by the way)

I would have loved a sunroof but couldn't justify the price. I was in a tiguan with a sunroof yesterday and it is HUGE. Makes a massive difference. I don't miss DCC but in fairness never had it. Dynaudio would be nice too.

I have it on my car, it works well in so much as it doesn't blind other drivers but maybe that's because the mk7 golf lights are so bad.

They are the one disapointment on the car. I've had numerous cars with xenons which were far brighter on dipped and main beam than the mk7.
Even my last car with halogen lights with lidl uprated bulbs was better :(

Oh no that doesn't sound good

Have to agree with neilw on this, I find the xenons not as good on the golf compared to previous cars equipped with them. The high beam assist isn't brill either and can be too slow to react.
I reckon led lights will come when they facelift the car.

    Back to alarm query again.

Have car booked into indy on Monday, but now thinking, is there a dealer option available that Vw would stand over.

One dealer said no, must try a few more, but anyone on here know?

As for the Xenon's I definitely find them better than halogens from a mk6...

Agree though the light assist can have a bit of a mind of its own. Really doesn't like heavy rain.

Didn't really consider it. As far as I'm aware for the price I'm paying for my order, I could have got an R with metallic paint as the only extra. Beast of a car I'm sure, love the pretoria alloys and the 4motion would appeal, but other than that I'm content with what I'm getting. Went a little bit over budget, but I'll be fairly pampered!! I saw a few pictures of the reflex silver with the panoramic roof and thought it looked really well. Should be nice for the summer and a brighter cabin overall. The Dynaudio only came about when I was originally told the alarm/keyless wasn't an option. The salesman had said he wouldnt charge me for the tech pack and might be able to do the alarm for €250. So when I was told no alarm I asked could he do the Dynaudio for 250 instead! (They were both around the €750 mark on the options list) The DCC I wanted because I'm living out in the country and some of the roads wouldn't be the best, also sounds like a nice little toy! The seats were down
to this thread, Joe A3 posted a couple of pictures a long time ago, I thought they looked well and for the price lifted the look/feel of the cabin. The winter pack I just chanced my arm and asked could he throw it in for 250, was already getting some aspects of it anyway I think. Alarm was confirmed yesterday, so other than keyless I'm getting all that I wanted and a bit more! Which is just as well, as I don't plan on doing this again any time soon!
And that's pretty much it..just have to wait now.

Savage spec- the alcantara seats are far nicer than the standard tartan cloth and much nicer than the leather too. Definitely a must have on any GTI IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Yeah that alcantara option on the GTI is lovely - a must have IMO. Actually if something similar were offered on the R (half leather with alcantara) I would have gone for it rather than full leather. The standard cloth in both the GTI and R isn't the best imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

Yeah the cloth in the R lets it down in my opinion. Leather/alcantra are really nice. They don't get that option in uk either so it's a nice upgrade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

The interior in the R is a let down. Blue dials and illumination on door sills in blue. Sure the other models get the same with different colours. Whopp de fecking do, a different colour LED. Seats are fine from a if ye stick your arse in them you don't fall out of them perspective, but compared with the wing back seats in the mk5/6 they are absolutely ****e. Just a standard seat. They also sit too high, I had to check mine weren't broke as originally I felt like I was in a qashqai.

Aww here im gonna waffle on, interior is just a Golf. Nothing wrong with it but it needs more spunk. But then more spunk would prob cost another few euros.

I don't think leather adds anything to it at all, and 2k, no thanks. Still the same interior and hot hatches aren't about leather. Should be alacantara/sport orientated.

The R does actually have cloth/alcantara seats as standard and are very comfortable.
I agree leather is terrible value at €2k and poor quality, the upgrade carbon leather is €3300, a complete rip off.

would a retro fit leather be of better quality for similar money ?

those lads in swords did a great job for me before on a sante fe.
