Well done, G, i think the fast start is a good strategy for a seasoned racer like you. That's really a terrific result.

Great stuff yesterday BG, don't know how you smile running XC!!

But it's so much fun. I don't know how people don't ;). I do think though that if people go to the trouble of supporting, usually freezing and wet in some windy mudbath, the least you can do is give them a smile :).

Saw some pics on the Raheny Shamrocks FB page my god that muck looked like hard going. Well done you sound like you had a blast :)

It was certainly mucky! You all set for your XC debut ?

Cheers, Murph. I think it's worth the risk in a short race definitely. Can't see myself getting away with it for anything longer than a couple of miles. Cue slow and painful death .

I think it was a look of pain and discomfort I gave you New Years Day, certainly wasn't a smile, sorry. Will smile next time.

It's ok, you can't really be smiling at 'strange' women now can you :D ?

The muck washes off. The smile will stay on your face for ever ;). LOL.

Thanks Laura, delighted with it. Team did well and we're all going back next year (Isn't that right aquinn ?)

Thanks! I keep on changing my mind about what to do the rest of the year. Start a campaign for year round XC maybe ? Main thing is to stay injury free and I've been really fortunate so far, so don't want to jinx that.

Hope you've still got that smile on your face BG, that was some race. Thanks for letting us relive it with you through your epic report, well done :)

Nice going, G. The enjoyment factor is a big part of getting the most out of your training and you certainly are delivering on the back of some good training. However, I am not sure the smiling concept really works during shorter events unless you can smile with your eyeballs out :D

    Maybe it was a grimace.

Did you see her bouncing across the field after too? And still smiling??!! Fantastic run, well done and congrats on the 3000m PB.

don't forget, Garmins not v reliable on switchy backy courses, it will usually plot the shortest route so the course won't have been too short, if any. Most likely measured with a wheel. Just saying :D
    Bungy Girl wrote: »
I know, and I wouldn't normally pay too much attention to the course length in XC, I just don't think yesterday's muck was conducive to me finally stringing a series of sub 4 min Km's together :o.

Crushed!! :D Just had a chat with the pa, asked him how national xc courses are measured (NOT with a wheel :o ) etc and how accurate they are. He started to explain about 10k races and how they are allowed to be +/- 50m and that international ones will generally state the exact distance....all very interesting but I had to cut to the chase and ask him 'yes, but what about 4k??!' ;)
....told him my time and before the words were out of my mouth, said 'with all due respect, that was a short course'. Haha :o
So we won't know by how much...I'd be tempted to say 200m short max as they could have added on an extra loop by the start on the first lap if they felt it was significantly short.
Effort was more like the equivalent of a storming 10k for me! :D Hope the recovery is going well!

    Monday – Recovery

Post-race recovery run up to the Bull Wall and back with aquinn. Bit windy but the time flew by with company. Always good to get miles in the bag on a Monday.
    • 5.4 miles @ 9:53 (path)

    Tuesday – Hmmmmmm

Not sure what this was. It was supposed to be a race-specific session (swiped from the Graduates Thread) but I was doing it in a dark, mucky field, couldn’t see the watch so the timings were off and didn’t get anywhere near 5 mile pace. Was under time pressure to get to a physio appointment so little or no warm up or cool down either. Bit of a mess all round. Oh well.

Physio worked on quads and glutes. Ouch ouch ouch.
    • 2.7 miles incl. 1/2/3/3/2/1 mins ‘fast’ with equal recoveries

    Wednesday – S&C

No running post physio so just a level 2 Pilates class this evening. Also booked in for this* in a couple of weeks which looks interesting. Free stuff, oh yeah!

    Thursday – Easy incl. strides

A short solo run. Effortless on the way up the promenade, then hard work on the way back due to the wind. The mile including the strides was the slowest one .
    • 4 miles @ 9:02 incl. 6 x 20 sec strides (path, grass)
    Friday – REST

Clothes shopping fuelled by taper madness. Buy ALL the things!

    Saturday – Easy

Was after dark before I got a chance to get out between parkrun volunteering (hands have just thawed out!) and BG Jr’s activities. Plan was for a local loop with some strides during the last mile but there was something on in Croker so the last mile was spent weaving on and off the path, dodging supporters and trying not to trip over small children .
    • 3 miles @ 9:04 (path)

That’s me tapered for tomorrow’s Raheny 5. A-Goal is a PB (<34:56), B-Goal is sub 35 and C-Goal is to not worry about A and B if the weather turns out to not be conducive to either :D.

Best of luck to everyone racing tomorrow and hard luck to the victims of Man Flu etc. who won’t make the start line. KennyG, I trust you will be sensible!!!

    Sunday - Raheny 5

    The Good
    • BG Jr. loving the kids 400m race and so proud of her medal.
    • Denis_B’s flapjacks, thank you Denis.
    • Age-group (16th) and F (61st) placing compared to 19th and 78th the previous year
    • Team prize, 2nd Vets team, woo hoo. Finally, a Raheny electrical item for my kitchen!
    • Nice post-race chat with boardsies and clubmates
    • Super supporters Annapr, Murph_D, Firedance, Dubgal. Thanks guys.

    The Bad
    • Completely lost my mojo once we entered the park. Was on target for sub 35 up until that point.
    • 35:28 net time. 22 seconds slower than last year .
    • The wind. Ugh.

    The Ugly
    • My hair was a disgrace after the wind and rain.
